SISU - Movie Review [ES - EN]

La influencia del cine americano en la realización de producciones en otras partes del mundo, posiblemente sea lo más evidente o esperado que ocurra y es que la fama de las producciones hollywoodense es algo que de una manera u otra alcanza a cualquier persona que le gusta el arte del cine y todo quedará en el director y guionista que deba tomar esa influencia y hacerla propia dando un sentido a lo que quiera transmitir en las imágenes e historia que deba crear; hago referencia a todo esto porque en esta producción finlandesa, lo notorio del estilo de films norteamericano es más que evidente, pero que solamente funciona como base para una buena película violenta, entretenida y que me hizo recordar clásicos y nuevos films del género de la acción.

The influence of American cinema in the making of productions in other parts of the world, is possibly the most evident or expected thing to happen and the fame of Hollywood productions is something that in one way or another reaches anyone who likes the art of cinema and everything will be in the director and screenwriter who must take that influence and make it his own giving a sense to what he wants to convey in the images and story to be created; I make reference to all this because in this Finnish production, the notorious American film style is more than evident, but it only works as a basis for a good violent and entertaining film that made me remember classics and new films of the action genre.

En estos días que he se me presentó la necesidad de ver películas de acción, el estreno de "SISU" me pareció perfecto y es que desde el momento de ver el trailer hace más de un mes, inmediatamente pensé que era una de las películas que obligatoriamente debería de ver, estaba fascinado porque no sabía absolutamente nada de esa producción a pesar de que fue proyectada en diferentes festivales que se llevaron a cabo el pasado año. Esta película se desarrolla en Finlandia de 1944, una época en dónde la Segunda Guerra Mundial está cerca de finalizar y justamente Finlandia crea un trato con la Unión Soviética para expulsar a la armada Nazi de su territorio; esto hace que el ejército alemán tome represarías contra ciertas zonas de Finlandia, en dónde destruyen carreteras y pueblos aledaños; justamente en ese momento un hombre acompañado de su caballo y fiel perro, está alejado de todo lo referente a la guerra, pero en el momento de regresar a su hogar se encontrará con un comando de 30 Nazis que le dificultaran su viaje; eso hace que un hombre que vive en paz, sin problema, desarrolle un motivo que lo hará levantarse una y otra vez hasta que sus enemigos estén sin vida.

In these days that I have the need to see action movies, the premiere of "SISU " seemed perfect to me and from the moment I saw the trailer more than a month ago, I immediately thought it was one of the movies that I had to see, I was fascinated because I knew absolutely nothing about this production even though it was screened in different festivals that took place last year. This film takes place in Finland in 1944, a time when the Second World War is near the end and Finland creates a deal with the Soviet Union to expel the Nazi army from its territory; this makes the German army to retaliate against certain areas of Finland, where they destroy roads and surrounding villages; Just at that time a man accompanied by his horse and faithful dog, is away from everything related to the war, but at the time of returning home he will find a command of 30 Nazis that will hinder his journey; that makes a man who lives in peace, without problem, develop a motive that will make him get up again and again until his enemies are lifeless.

En el año 2003, tuve la oportunidad de ver un short film el cual recibió como nombre "Rare Exports Inc." (pueden buscarlo en Youtube) el cual relata una extraña historia sobre el secreto de Santa Claus; tiempo después se realizó otra producción de ese estilo hasta que por fin se convirtió en un film en el 2010; cada una de estas producciones las dirigió y escribió, Jalmari Helander que también dirigió un buen y entretenido film llamado "Big Game" (2014); mucho tiempo ha pasado de todas esas y le había perdido el rastro a ese director hasta que tuve conocimiento de este film y eso hizo que mis expectativas fueran mayores porque había disfrutado de sus anteriores trabajos. En mi humilde opinión, "SISU" es lo mejor que ha realizado como director; la manera de usar los exteriores para el relato de esta simple y corta historia me pareció excelente y eso es debido a la fotografía, la cual considero impresionante y no quiero ser exagerado, pero para este pequeño film de acción, es muy notorio ver qué se haga un buen trabajo en mostrar tan buenas escenografías. Con respecto a las escenas de acción, todas están muy bien realizas, todas correctas, así como en dónde se usa el CGI para dar un mejor impacto, no hay ninguna que considere como malas escenas y justamente son esas en dónde relaciono con otros films de acción, como por ejemplo "Rambo III", aunque el director dice que fue "First Blood" es uno de los films que lo ha influenciado.

La historia es otro factor que hizo que la nostalgia por los films de acción de los 80' se hiciera presente; me gusta la simpleza y lo directo de como es el relato; hay pocas cosas que desarrollar y todo queda para ser explicado en dos escenas en especial y lo demás queda para la interpretación de cada quien, lo cual también es sencillo. Posiblemente, está historia se base en temas como subestimar primeramente a una persona mayor que después se convertirá en un enemigo, lo otro es convertir a un hombre solitario, en una leyenda viviente, en alguien que hay que temer porque parece sobrenatural y justamente eso es lo que más me ha gustado porque es el clásico cliché en este tipo de films y el cual siempre he aceptado sin ningún problema; es esto lo que valoro de esta historia que a mostrar lamentables situaciones en una época de guerra, se toma libertades de hacer algo mejor y que nos ponga en una situación de fantasía o sobrenatural que funciona muy bien en el relato de la historia de su protagonista.

In 2003, I had the opportunity to see a short film called "Rare Exports Inc." (you can look it up on Youtube) which tells a strange story about the secret of Santa Claus; some time later another production of that style was made until it finally became a film in 2010; each of these productions were directed and written by, Jalmari Helander who also directed a good and entertaining film called "Big Game" (2014); a long time has passed from all those and I had lost track of that director until I had knowledge of this film and that made my expectations higher because I had enjoyed his previous works. In my humble opinion, "SISU" is the best he has done as a director; the way of using the exteriors to tell this simple and short story seemed excellent to me and that is due to the photography, which I consider impressive and I don't want to be exaggerating, but for this small action film, it is very noticeable to see such a good job in showing such good scenographies. Regarding the action scenes, all are very well done, all correct, as well as where CGI is used to give a better impact, there is none that I consider as bad scenes and it is precisely those where I relate to other action films, such as "Rambo III", although the director says that it was "First Blood" is one of the films that has influenced him.

The story is another factor that made the nostalgia for the action films of the 80's present; I like the simplicity and directness of the story; there are few things to develop and everything is to be explained in two scenes in particular and the rest is left to the interpretation of each one, which is also simple. Possibly, this story is based on themes such as first underestimating an older person who will later become an enemy, the other is to turn a lonely man into a living legend, into someone to be feared because he seems supernatural and that is exactly what I liked the most because it is the classic cliché in this type of films and which I have always accepted without any problem; This is what I appreciate about this story that, while showing lamentable situations in a time of war, it takes liberties to do something better and put us in a fantasy or supernatural situation that works very well in the story of the protagonist's story.

El cast es corto; un protagonista principal, un pelotón de 30 personas y que entre ellas tengan a tres personajes principales junto a un grupo de mujeres, entre todos ellos, la mayoría de los diálogos son dichos por los villanos del film interpretados por Aksel Hennie y Jack Doolan; ambos actores hacen un buen y aceptable trabajo con respecto a ser parte de una guerra perdida y que buscan una manera de salir de una situación la cual saben que significará el fin de sus vidas, eso los hace ser más inescrupulosos de lo que ya eran y eso los hace más peligrosos; junto a ellos también está el grupo de mujeres raptadas, las cuales son víctimas del abuso; una de ellas que es interpretada por Mimosa Willamo tiene un buen y breve rol en este film, primero como víctima y después como líder, ella cumple con los pocos y necesarios diálogos que debe realizar; para finalizar debo hacer referencia al protagonista del film, a "Aatami Korpi" Interpretado por Jorma Tommila, quien ha trabajado con Helander en sus otras dos producciones; el desempeño de este actor me gustó porque deja que su expresión facial sea quien relate todo lo que va sintiendo en diferentes facetas en su corto viaje alejado de la guerra, me gusta este personaje que no está preparado para perder nuevamente y se convierte en su principal motivación para seguir adelante, es mi personaje favorito, es el mejor del film.

The cast is short; a main protagonist, a platoon of 30 people and that among them have three main characters along with a group of women, among all of them, most of the dialogues are said by the villains of the film played by Aksel Hennie and Jack Doolan; both actors do a good and acceptable job with respect to being part of a lost war and looking for a way out of a situation which they know will mean the end of their lives, that makes them more unscrupulous than they already were and that makes them more dangerous; next to them there is also the group of abducted women, who are victims of abuse; one of them who is played by Mimosa Willamo has a good and brief role in this film, first as a victim and then as a leader, she fulfills the few and necessary dialogues she must perform; to finish I must make reference to the main character of the film, to "Aatami Korpi" Played by Jorma Tommila, who has worked with Helander in his other two productions; I liked the performance of this actor because he lets his facial expression be the one who tells everything he is feeling in different facets in his short journey away from the war, I like this character who is not prepared to lose again and becomes his main motivation to move forward, he is my favorite character, he is the best of the film.

Me agradó terminar de ver SISU y sentir que mis expectativas fueron respondidas; este es un buen film porque primeramente es corto, simple, directo, no trata de inventar nada y es que influencia de films cómo la franquicia de Rambo y la de John Wick, en mi opinión fueron Influyentes así como seguramente fue las producciones de Tarantino como el género del Western; todos esos elementos junto al misticismo de su protagonista es lo que más me ha gustado porque tenía un buen tiempo de no ver justamente eso, un film que sea como los clásicos del cine de acción y que también demuestra elementos que resaltan mucho como por ejemplo es tanto la dirección, como la fotografía. Recomiendo esta película que demuestra la necesidad de tener motivos y esperanza en la vida y es que cuando vean el film y entiendan la explicación o el significado de "SISU", entenderán el hecho de que por muy solitario que es alguien, siempre tendrá un motivo para hacer lo que debe hacer para así terminar de pie viendo a sus enemigos caer.

I was pleased to finish watching SISU and feel that my expectations were answered; this is a good film because first of all it is short, simple, direct, does not try to invent anything and is influenced by films like the Rambo franchise and John Wick, in my opinion were influential as well as surely was the productions of Tarantino as the Western genre; All these elements along with the mysticism of its protagonist is what I liked the most because I had a long time of not seeing just that, a film that is like the classics of action movies and also shows elements that stand out a lot as for example is both the direction and photography. I recommend this film that shows the need to have reasons and hope in life and when you see the film and understand the explanation or the meaning of "SISU", you will understand the fact that no matter how lonely someone is, he will always have a reason to do what he has to do to end up standing and watching his enemies fall.
