Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves - Movie Review [ES - EN]

"Películas que no esperaba ver", posiblemente está deba ser una sección que deba crear en mi blog la cual como su nombre lo indica son películas que al ver el trailer mi primera impresión fue de verla en algún otro momento, pero siempre hay algo que puede hacer que cambie de opinión y siempre es leer críticas especializadas o del público en general las cuales son positivas y justamente en esta publicación hago reseña de un film el cual es claro ejemplo de la frase que hace referencia a "No juzgues a un libro por su portada" aunque en esta oportunidad es mejor decir "No juzgues a una película por su trailer".

"Movies I didn't expect to see", possibly this should be a section I should create in my blog which as its name indicates are movies that when I saw the trailer my first impression was to see it at some other time, but there is always something that can change my mind and it is always reading specialized reviews or from the general public which are positive and precisely in this publication I review a film which is a clear example of the phrase that refers to "Do not judge a book by its cover" although in this opportunity it is better to say "Do not judge a movie by its trailer".

Mi conocimiento sobre lo que es "Dungeons & Dragons" no es por ser un fan del juego de rol, mi conocimiento sobre este juego proviene de la serie animada estrenada a comienzos de los 80', la cual tuvo una duración de tan solo tres temporadas y gracias a esa serie junto a otras producciones más de esa época fue que supe pocas cosas sobre ese juego, el cual nunca en vida he tenido la oportunidad de jugarlo; ahora sé que anteriormente han existido otras producciones cinematográficas, pero al ser de tan mala calidad, solo he visto el film estrenado en el 2000 y posiblemente sea una de las peores películas que he visto y lamentablemente todo eso hizo que no estuviera tan motivo en ver "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves", el cual es una película que no tiene relación ni con la serie animada, ni con ninguno de los tres films estrenados entre el 2000 y 2012; en esta oportunidad, se relata una historia llena de aventuras, emoción, batallas, canciones, poderosos enemigos y un grupo de ladrones que aceptarán ser parte de una misión que pueda salvar todo un reino lleno de fantasía y es que "Honor Among Thieves" demuestra a un grupo de desadaptados, dejar atrás el mundo criminal para ser grandes héroes.

My knowledge about what is "Dungeons & Dragons" is not for being a fan of the role playing game, my knowledge about this game comes from the animated series released in the early 80's, which had a duration of only three seasons and thanks to that series along with other productions of that time was that I knew few things about that game, which I have never had the opportunity to play it in life; Now I know that previously there have been other film productions, but being of such poor quality, I have only seen the film released in 2000 and it is possibly one of the worst movies I've seen and unfortunately all that made me not so motivated to see "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves ", which is a film that has no relation neither with the animated series, nor with any of the three films released between 2000 and 2012; this time, it tells a story full of adventure, excitement, battles, songs, powerful enemies and a group of thieves who will accept to be part of a mission that can save a whole kingdom full of fantasy and is that "Honor Among Thieves" shows a group of misfits, leave behind the criminal world to be great heroes.

Este film está dirigido por Jonathan Goldstein y John Francis Daley quienes escribieron el guion junto a Michael Gilio; primeramente haré referencia a la pareja de directores que ya había visto otro film dirigido por ellos el cual es "Game Night" (2018) la cual me pareció una genialidad porque mantiene una intriga en el primer acto que en los dos siguientes pudo transitar tanto en el terror como en la comedia; en esta oportunidad, me gusta el trabajo de ambos porque aprovechan todo lo que crearon junto a Gilio en el guion, me gustan mucho las referencias que hacen con tomas aéreas para dar esa sensación que estamos en presencia del juego de mesa y en mi opinión en una de las mejores y adecuada referencia que tiene este film; también me gusta como es el uso de la cámara en las escenas de persecución y las peleas, es bastante dinámica, entretenida y adecuada para el tipo de historia.

Con respecto al guion, en mi opinión es perfecto para este tipo de película; no es exagerado, no es aburrido, es inteligente en saber en qué momento hay que decir algo cómico y en mi opinión no profundiza en el momento donde este grupo no se siente capaz de realizar una misión y ese es una de las características que más me ha agradado junto a toda esa historia en dónde uno o dos ladrones deben reunir un grupo para llevar a cabo un importante robo; este es un factor importante y que sus guionistas decidieran no alejar su historia de los clichés de ese género hace que esta producción sea adecuada; no trata de intentar o crear algo nuevo, pero si se enfoca en demostrar los valiosos motivos de cada uno de los personajes para las acciones que deben cometer en este film.

This film is directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley who wrote the script together with Michael Gilio; firstly I will make reference to the pair of directors that I had already seen another film directed by them which is "Game Night" (2018) which I thought was a genius because it maintains an intrigue in the first act that in the next two could transit both in horror and comedy; in this opportunity, I like the work of both because they take advantage of everything they created together with Gilio in the script, I really like the references they make with aerial shots to give that feeling that we are in the presence of the board game and in my opinion in one of the best and adequate reference that this film has; I also like how is the use of the camera in the chase scenes and fights, it is quite dynamic, entertaining and suitable for the type of story.

Regarding the script, in my opinion it is perfect for this type of film; it is not exaggerated, it is not boring, it is intelligent in knowing when to say something funny and in my opinion it does not delve into the moment where this group does not feel capable of carrying out a mission and that is one of the features that I liked the most along with all that story where one or two thieves must gather a group to carry out an important robbery; this is an important factor and that its screenwriters decided not to move their story away from the clichés of that genre makes this production adequate; it does not try to try or create something new, but it does focus on demonstrating the valuable motives of each of the characters for the actions they must commit in this film.

Las actuaciones son muy buenas, en especial las del grupo de héroes y protagonistas del film; Chris Pine en su interpretación de "Edgin Darvis" es de los puntos más positivos del film, tiene el encanto, el humor y valentía de ser un líder y que en otro tipo de historias se le incluye todo el asunto de ser un mujeriego con vicios y otros problemas, pero la realidad es que a pesar de haber perdido tanto, llega un momento que se debe centrar en lo que cree que es importante y eso posible le nuble la razón, pero eso no evitará que mantenga la decisión de hacer siempre lo correcto; otro buen personaje es "Holga", interpretada por Michelle Rodriguez, la fuerza, el músculo del grupo; una mujer muy divertida, sin miedo a nada aunque sus gustos personales le causaran dificultades, pero justamente al ser tan fuerte pareciera que no debe preocuparle nada y eso es debido a lo fiel que es con sus amigos; puedo decir que es un buen trabajo, me pareció excelente su personaje; con respecto a Justice Smith y Sophia Lillis, en ellos dos está la responsabilidad de interpretar a personajes mágicos; primeramente esta "Simon", un mago inexperto que tiene la presión de ser parte de una gran y reconocida familia de magos y eso hace que tenga miedo en demostrar su verdadero potencial; otro personaje mágico es "Doric" la cual es una "Tiefling", personaje creado para el juego de D&D; mi opinión sobre este personaje y más que nada con la actualización de Lillis es que deja atrás esos personajes de adolescentes y se nota en esta oportunidad en hacer de una joven mujer; se nota más sería y adulta. No quiero terminar este párrafo sin escribir sobre la actuación de Hugh Grant el cual es un personaje muy divertido para el poco tiempo que aparece en escena, pero no hay duda que hace un buen trabajo, su personaje puede ser algo predecible, pero eso no evita que Grant hiciera un buen trabajo.

The performances are very good, especially those of the group of heroes and protagonists of the film; Chris Pine in his interpretation of "Edgin Darvis" is one of the most positive points of the film, he has the charm, humor and courage to be a leader and that in other types of stories includes the whole issue of being a womanizer with vices and other problems, but the reality is that despite having lost so much, there comes a time to focus on what he believes is important and that may cloud his reason, but that will not prevent him from maintaining the decision to always do the right thing; Another good character is "Holga", played by Michelle Rodriguez, the strength, the muscle of the group; a very funny woman, not afraid of anything although her personal tastes will cause her difficulties, but just being so strong it seems that she should not worry about anything and that is because of how faithful she is to her friends; I can say that it is a good job, I found his character excellent; regarding Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis, they both have the responsibility of playing magical characters; first of all there is "Simon", an inexperienced magician who has the pressure of being part of a great and recognized family of magicians and that makes him afraid to show his true potential; another magical character is "Doric" which is a "Tiefling", a character created for the D&D game; my opinion about this character and more than anything with the update of Lillis is that she leaves behind those teenage characters and it is noticeable in this opportunity to play a young woman; she is more serious and adult. I don't want to end this paragraph without writing about the performance of Hugh Grant who is a very funny character for the short time he appears on stage, but there is no doubt that he does a good job, his character can be somewhat predictable, but that doesn't prevent Grant from doing a good job.

Estoy completamente seguro que D&D Honor Among Thieves es una de las sorpresas del año; este film no es perfecto porque existe una que otras falencias, pero es divertido, me reí varias veces y eso la hace que sea una película muy entretenida; la química entre sus personajes es notoria y creo que eso hace que funcione muy bien; lo otro es el uso del CGI que es adecuado, hay buenas escenas tanto en la creación de diferentes escenografías como de varios personajes. Este film usa muy bien los elementos de este género que usa como base para su relato cómo se debe planear un robo, mostrando algo de originalidad al unirlo a otro elemento o factor como es la fantasía que proyecta el ser parte de la franquicia de este importante juego donde la magia es lo primordial y por eso me pareció genial, transita en lo conocido o visto en otras películas, pero usa cosas que funcionan para que este film no sea una copia más. No tenía expectativas por este film, pero la pasé muy bien viéndola y puedo decir que gracias al leer algunas breves opiniones en donde la comparaban con "Pirates of the Caribbean" fue lo que me impulsó a verla y así crear una opinión propia y repito, me sorprendió porque es un buen film, divertido, familiar, con buenas escenas de acción, buenos efectos especiales, excelentes protagonistas y regulares villanos, pero en mi opinión, es mucho más lo positivo que lo poco negativo de esta producción y por eso los invito a ver una inesperada buena película.

I am completely sure that D&D Honor Among Thieves is one of the surprises of the year; this film is not perfect because there are some flaws, but it is fun, I laughed several times and that makes it a very entertaining movie; the chemistry between its characters is notorious and I think that makes it work very well; the other thing is the use of CGI that is adequate, there are good scenes both in the creation of different scenographies and several characters. This film uses very well the elements of this genre that uses as a basis for its story how a robbery should be planned, showing some originality by joining it to another element or factor as is the fantasy that projects being part of the franchise of this important game where magic is paramount and that's why I thought it was great, it transits in what is known or seen in other films, but uses things that work so that this film is not just another copy. I had no expectations for this film, but I had a great time watching it and I can say that thanks to reading some brief opinions where they compared it with "Pirates of the Caribbean" was what prompted me to see it and thus create my own opinion and I repeat, I was surprised because it is a good film, fun, familiar, with good action scenes, good special effects, excellent protagonists and regular villains, but in my opinion, it is much more positive than the little negative of this production and therefore I invite you to see an unexpectedly good movie.
