[Retro review] [Eng | Esp ] Kiki's Delivery Service | A witch in the city

Welcome my dear witchy travelers of the internet and thank you very much for having made a temporary stop in my post, regarding animation, Studio Ghibli is one of my favorites and I have mentioned it on countless occasions, today we are brought together by an animation which brings a modern world mixed with some magical elements "Kiki's Delivery Service" brings that and more so I couldn't miss it. Without further ado, grab your brooms because we are about to start flying.

Kiki's Delivery Service was released in 1989, based on 'Majo no takkyūbin' from 1985 written by Eiko Kadono, directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli, it has a duration of 1 hour and 42 minutes. It is a dramatic fantasy animation, the story revolves around Kiki, a 13-year-old girl who descends from a lineage of witches. Family tradition indicates that when a witch reaches this age she must leave her home for a year to finish training. her skills as a witch, this little girl is excited to take this step without taking into account all the difficulties that living on her own entails.

I never get tired of seeing the fantastic animation that always accompanies Ghibli films, these are very beautiful due to the care taken in both the scenery and the various details that make the animation feel alive, in turn, this increases with Its color palette is maintained with pleasant and striking tones.

The soundtrack is pleasant due to the high presence of only instrumental musical tracks, which accompanies the different events of the film in a good way, in turn, it includes one or another song that, although they are not instrumental, still fit perfectly into the history.

The world building is nice, just focusing on the scenery you have quite beautiful landscapes that detail the various sites of the city in a good way. Looking at the social sphere, we have a contemporary city which considered witches as a myth, causing there to be almost no presence of magic and fantastic things, this could lead to some kind of more complex thing but taking into account the child audience to which the film is dedicated is not to demand too much.

The plot results in an interesting story, it focuses on the transition of a girl at the beginning of her adulthood as she has to assume various responsibilities and obligations, all this accumulation of things are what every decent human being must face when they begin to mature. to become a functional adult, something that is well represented within the film. The fantasy elements are few, being an allegory to the decreasing relevance of witchcraft within society, in fact, the protagonist herself has problems at first being able to fit into it. There are few times when I say this but the film seemed very short to me, its duration feels ephemeral because the way he does things and his way of relating is very interesting, all of this results in leaving the viewer wanting more.

Kiki is without a doubt an excellent character with a very good characterization and with different nuances that build her personality, all of this makes her very likable. The protagonist goes through an interesting point when she has to do the things she likes even if she doesn't feel like doing them, having a block when she feels overwhelmed by the new direction of her life, this could have been more dense and psychological but the film decided not to go into depth to maintaining that childish line, in addition, to the above is added the need to adapt to the new place where she lives because she feels like an outsider as there are some differences between her and the kids of her age in the city, this reflects perfection the concept of being new to a city and/or a country, all of this gives a certain degree of depth to the little witch. The rest of the characters are fine, nothing spectacular beyond the fact that they are nice.

Kiki's Delivery Service is a film with quite beautiful messages that maintains that line of being innocent most of the time despite containing quite dense themes, however it is that same childish nature that prevents it from taking these concepts to something more complex, This does not make it bad, but rather it denotes that it limits itself to remain simple and understandable for a child audience. It is for all of the above that it deserves 3.5 stars out of 7, a film with very mature moments that an adult could easily identify with but despite this it maintains that childish character at all times.
