Your Monster - Movie Review
Sypnosis
What if the monster that was under your bed when you were a kid is actually real now? Your monster is a movie whereby the character, Laura, played by Melissa Berrera is an actress who has just been released from hospital with a possible cancer diagnosis her boyfriend Jacob played by Edmund Donovan is an up-and-coming theatre director and he
breaks up with Laura while she is still in hospital.
Laura's parents have been away for a while on holiday so Laura has the whole of her New York apartment to herself. One night, she goes into her bedroom closet to fetch something and she bumps into a monster played by Tommy Dewey after a few scenes of Laura running away from the monster. They slowly become comfortable with each other and they form a nice relationship. They watch movies together, they eat together, they become quite close.
Your monster is directed by Caroline Lindy and this is her directorial debut. This film is based on her own short film of the same name from 2020.
My Review
This film had quite a good word of mouth from the midnight section but unfortunately I was a little bit disappointed by Your monster. The central role remains between the Laura and the monster is very very good, very very compelling, very sweet, romantic and funny. I really liked the dynamic between them too. But the film spends about 40% on this romance and about 60% on this play rehearsal that Jacob is putting on.
The play rehearsal scenes were very tedious to watch. Laura has fits too, has feelings for Jacob and of course Laura joining a play after they've broken up. You know it's going to be uncomfortable for everyone and you know what's going to happen so I found these scenes very tedious and predictable and cliched.
You can tell this film was based on a short film that this don't have enough to develop and expand these central romance so they decide to feel most of the film with this predictable tedious play scenes. I just wish they developed the central love story, love story romance a little bit more. There's many directions, they could have garnered darker elements but it just doesn't go anywhere unfortunately.
I really liked the two central performances. Laura, Melissa Burrera, she is fantastic and Tommy Jury as the monster. He's very very charming. He always has the right thing to say in every scenario. Melissa Burrera is really showing her full range. She's done horror, crime, musicals and now she's playing a character she hasn't really played before. She's very sweet and funny and cute and she really is really charming. She also shows her full range as an actress at the moment.
My Rating on the Movie
I give Your monster two and a half stars out of five. The romance between Laura and the monster is very very sweet and charming but it just spends way too much time on this predictable cliched play rehearsal scenes that were very tedious to watch.
Never heard of this film before actually, but I can understand your frustration that if the title is about their romance, most of the scenes should center around that. Nicely reviewed.🌺
