Fave TV from Space and Small Towns
We all have favourite movies, songs, bands and actors, but what are your favourite TV shows. Say top 5. For the purpose of this post, I will offer up my favourite shows that are not also situated a Galaxy, Far, Far Away. Otherwise the Star Wars Universe might not leave room for much else.
The following list is no in particular order.
Twin Peaks
What's more compelling than a small town where everyone is either really beautiful or really strange, or both, a place where the pie and coffee is sublime? What's missing? Your first response might not be the murder of the Homecoming Queen, but it is if you are looking for a reason to bring a very DISHY looking FBI agent, in the lithe form of Kyle MacLachlan, to town.
Twin Peaks with all its eccentricities and haunting mysteries has aged very well. But I have to be honest. It won't be for everyone. It is however a very suiting entry level Lynch production and it feature a brilliant soundtrack.
Northern Exposure
What? Another small eccentric town. Yes. But this one with snow and sans the murder. Big town, newly minted doctor is sent to Cicely, Alaska to pay-off his student loan. Said doctor soon understands he still has a lot to learn about humanity ... starting with his own, as he adjusts to a sometimes icy, small town way of life, replete with wondering moose.
Gilmore Girls
You may be sensing a trend; so let's not buck it. Yep, small town characters make for fascinating viewing. Gilmore Girls takes place in the fictional Connecticut town of Stars Hollow. The fast-talking mother-daughter team of Lorelai and Rory keeps us tuned in with witty popular culture allusions and a string of romances with handsome lads.
X-Files
X-Files doesn't take place in a small town, but a series of small towns. Mystery, monsters, aliens, and government corruption, Mulder and Scully kept the viewers pinned for more than a decade of serial episodes and movies. The series just also happened to be filmed in Vancouver. It is a bit surreal when the backdrop is recognizable but also no longer that way.
Roswell
Take the sort of small town of Roswell, New Mexico, handsome lads, and aliens, and you get the 90's teenage hit Roswell (the original).I have yet to visit the revamped series. Have you? Is it any good?
I discovered Roswell while living in Japan. Think Twilight but with aliens instead of vampires and werewolves.. I am not sure I would have started watching it otherwise. I thought myself too mature, but then the same desperation had me watching a considerable amount of Sesame Street in the Land of the Rising Sun. There wasn't a lot of English TV and streaming was not yet a thing. It then became a highlight of the week. And of course what makes it a favourite is the desire to watch it again and again, without it getting tired or old. I recently purchased Season One on Itunes. I am introducing it to my space loving teenage son. It may be just a bit to sappy for his taste.
Well that is my top five. Some honourable mentions again sans Star Wars are Fraser and more recently Stranger Things.

Oh wow, I had forgotten about Northern Exposure and just how fun it was. What a fantastic show. And X-Files! That was back in the day when I needed to be home in time to watch. There was no on-demand, and the vcr was for the weak.
Or when they went into syndication. That was the predecessor to streaming.
