Was it really based on real events? My opinion (Eng-Esp)

      In Austria in 1984, a young middle-class woman named Elisabeth Fritzl, who was about to turn 18, disappeared. She was kidnapped by her own father Josef Fritzl, when one day he asked her for help to take some things down to the basement and there he put her in a part that she didn't know, an extension with corridors and a series of compartments. There he kidnapped her, mistreated her, abused her, got her pregnant 7 times, and after 24 years, because one of her daughters became seriously ill, they decided to take her to the emergency room, and at that moment Elisabeth took advantage and asked for help, finally achieving her release and that of her children in 2008.

     This case had worldwide coverage after the rescue, meanwhile it was an issue in the country itself. But I remember seeing the horrible story on the news in 2008, without many images of the victims, mainly it was a story with the face of the culprit and the place of the kidnapping.

Es secuestrada por su propio padre Josef Fritzl, cuando un día él le pidió ayuda para bajar unas cosas al sótano y allí la metió a una parte que no conocía, una extensión con pasillos y una serie de compartimientos, allí la secuestró, maltrató, abusó, la dejó embarazada 7 veces, y luego de 24 años, debido a que una de sus hijas enfermó gravemente, deciden llevarla a urgencias, y en ese momento Elisabeth aprovechó y pidió ayuda, logrando por fin su liberación y la de sus hijos en el 2008.
     Este caso tuvo cobertura a nivel mundial luego del rescate, mientras tanto fue un tema del propio país. Pero la horrible historia recuerdo haberla visto en los noticieros en el 2008, sin muchas imágenes de las víctimas, principalmente era una historia con la cara del culpable y del lugar del secuestro.

      In 2021, the American film "Girl in the Basement" is coming out, directed by Elisabeth Röhm. Although, I'm coming to see it now.

     The actress who plays Elisabeth Fritzl is Stefanie Scott, whom we might remember from Insidious 3 or Night of the Demon Chapter 3 and who had a good performance in this film, although I think they could have made her more damaged, given that she spent 24 years locked up, only being abused by her father and raising the children he fathered, poor nutrition, no sunlight, no doctors to care for her, etc. and here they showed her with just dark circles.

     The actor who played Josef Fritzl is Judd Nelson, and here I point out that I'm really getting older, since I loved this actor for one of my favorite 80s movies, The Breakfast Club, here he is quite old as is natural, and I hadn't seen him for many years. His performance was also very restrained, and the lack of a script didn't help either.

     La actriz que interpreta a Elisabeth Fritzl, es Stefanie Scott a quien podríamos recordar por Insiduos 3 o La noche del demonio Capítulo 3 y que en esta película tuvo una buena actuación, aunque pienso que pudieron haberla deteriorado más, dado que pasó 24 años encerrada, solo siendo abusada por su padre y criando a los hijos que éste le engendró, mala alimentación, sin luz solar, sin médicos que la atienda, etc y aquí la mostraron apenas con unas ojeras.
     El actor que interpretó a Josef Fritzl, es Judd Nelson, y aquí destaco que realmente estoy envejeciendo, ya que a este actor lo amé por una de mis película ochenteras preferidas, El Club de los cinco, aquí está bastante viejo como es natural, y tenía muchos años sin verlo. Su actuación también estuvo muy contenida, y es que la falta de guion no ayudó tampoco.

     Now, the true story that is portrayed in the film, I can say that it was quite deficient in that it did not adjust to the reality of the events. Today we have documentaries that detail with press releases, images, interviews with medical personnel, neighbors, who have reconstructed the trial, etc. and I could recognize that the film was not faithful to the events and I am not referring to the way of telling it, but to the facts that it shows.

     I do not know why so many details were left out, because really the true story is much worse than what we saw in the film. The abuse of Elisabeth by her father began at the age of 11, this was not said in the film.

     Elisabeth's father, Josef Fritzl, had previously been in prison for rape, and although he served his sentence and his neighbors knew about it, it was not mentioned. He also had arrests for arson and threats with a knife. We now know that there was a lack of professionalism on the part of the Austrian police, and even today they have not accepted responsibility for not having noticed the clues for so many years. All of this would have been interesting to see.

! [Spanish version]     Ahora bien, la verdadera historia que es plasmada en la película, puedo decir que fue bastante deficiente en cuanto a que no se ajustó a la realidad de los hechos. Hoy en día disponemos de documentales que detallan con notas de prensa, imágenes, entrevistas con el personal médico, vecinos, que han reconstruido el juicio, etc. y pude reconocer que la película no fue fiel a los acontecimientos y no me refiero a la forma de contarla, sino a los hechos que muestra.
     Desconozco por qué se dejaron de contar tantos detalles, porque realmente la verdadera historia es muchísimo peor que lo que vimos en la película. Los abusos a Elisabeth de parte de su padre comenzaron desde los 11 años, esto no se dijo en la película.
     El padre de Elisabeth, Josef Fritzl había estado preso anteriormente por violación, y aunque cumplió su condena y sus vecinos conocían de esto, no se mencionó. También tuvo arrestos por incendios y amenazas con un cuchillo. Ahora sabemos que hubo falta de profesionalismo de parte de la policía de Austria, incluso hoy en día no han asumido su responsabilidad en no haberse dado cuenta de las pistas durante tantos años, todo esto sí hubiese sido interesante de ver.

     Something I would like to highlight about this film is the discretion in the abuses that Josef inflicted on Elisabeth. Only at first sight did it seem like it would be something terrifying to see, but it was actually quite implicit. It wasn't difficult to see in that sense and it's something I'm very grateful for as a viewer and a woman. Although, I think that nowadays directors have many narrative resources, often visual, or sound or lack of sound, with which they can tell a story, and I think that the director, perhaps by wanting to be discreet with this point, took away a lot of reality.

     The whole issue of Elisabeth's sick daughter, who was taken to the hospital, and the release of Elisabeth and her children, was not like what happened in the film, it was much more complex. The constitution and appearance of Elisabeth and her children in the film do not correspond to the years of confinement, lack of sun, vaccinations, etc.

[Spanish version]     Algo que quisiera destacar de esta película, es la discreción en los abusos que le realizó Josef a Elisabeth, solo en un primer encuentro parecía que sería algo aterrador de ver, pero realmente fue bastante implícito, no fue difícil de ver en ese sentido y es algo que agradezco bastante como espectadora y mujer. Aunque, creo que hoy en día los directores tienen muchos recursos de narración, muchas veces visuales, o de sonido o de falta de sonido, con la cual pueden narrar una historia, y pienso que la directora tal vez al querer ser discreta con este punto, le quitó mucha realidad.
      Todo el tema de la hija de Elisabeth enferma, que fue llevada al hospital, y la liberación de Elisabeth y de sus hijos, no fue como ocurrió en la película, fue mucho más compleja. La constitución y semblante de Elisabeth y de sus hijos en la película no se corresponden con los años de encierro, falta de sol, de vacunas, etc.

      Again, I do not know the reasons why so many primary details were omitted, such as the fact that Josef brought not one but three children with Elisabeth upstairs to the house, which they raised since she had supposedly abandoned them at the door of her house and had gone off with a sect, telling them not to look for her.

     Elisabeth even had twins, one of whom died due to lack of medical attention. In other words, it is a story that is really poorly told in the film.

      Nuevamente destaco que no conozco las razones de por qué se omitieron tantos detalles primarios, como que Josef llevó arriba, a la casa no uno, sino 3 hijos de él con Elisabeth, los cuales criaron dado que supuestamente ella los había abandonado en la puerta de su casa y se había ido con una secta diciendo que no la buscaran.
     Incluso, Elisabeth llegó a tener unos gemelos, de los cuales uno murió por falta de atención médica. Es decir, realmente es una historia muy mal contada en la película.
