[ENG - ESP] EL Club de los Lectores Criminales (2023) | A slasher to train

A serial killer who uses social networks and who also writes non-fiction novels about his murders, seems like a very good idea that no one can miss, however, it all depends on how you present the work, because in the end it may not look attractive.
The truth is that I was left a little dry; with a little scratchy throat. The film I present below has an element that caught my attention; and it belongs to the Slasher genre, one of my favorite horror genres, however, I can not classify this film as one of my favorites and I will explain why.

Un asesino serial que usa redes sociales y que aparte escribe novelas de no-ficción sobre sus asesinatos, parece una idea muy buena que nadie se puede perder, sin embargo, todo depende de como presentes la obra, pues al final posiblemente no luzca atractiva.
La verdad es que me quedé un poco seco; con un poco de raspado en la garganta. La película que les presento a continuación tiene un elemento que me llamó la atención; y es que pertenece al género Slasher, uno de mis preferidos del terror, sin embargo, no puedo catalogar este filme como uno de mis favoritos y enseguida les explicaré por qué.

Killer Book Club is a Spanish horror film directed by Carlos Alonso and scripted by Carlos Gracia Miranda, who is the author of the novel on which this film was based. It starred Veki Velilla, along with Ane Rot, Álvaro Mel, Priscilla Delgado, Iván Pellicer, María Cerezuela, Carlos Alcaide, Hamza Zaidi, among others.
The music was composed by Arnau Bataller and the photography by Pablo Díez. The production was in charge of the company Brutal Media for the streaming platform of movies and series Netflix, where it is currently in the top 10 most watched movies in Spain within this service. The film was released on August 25 and has a running time of 89 minutes (an hour and a half to be exact).

El club de los lectores criminales es una película de terror española dirigida por Carlos Alonso y guionizada por Carlos Gracia Miranda, el cual es el autor de la novela en que se basó esta película. Fue protagonizada por Veki Velilla, junto con Ane Rot, Álvaro Mel, Priscilla Delgado, Iván Pellicer, María Cerezuela, Carlos Alcaide, Hamza Zaidi, entre otros.
La música fue realizada por Arnau Bataller y la fotografía por Pablo Díez. En la producción estuvo a cargo la empresa Brutal Media para la plataforma de streaming de películas y series Netflix, donde se encuentra actualmente en el top 10 de películas más vistas en España dentro de este servicio. La película fue lanzada el 25 de agosto y tiene una duración de 89 minutos (una hora y media para ser exactos).
Plot
Angela is a literature student who is in the process of writing her second novel, but she has insecurities that hold her back and do not let her advance in her creativity. She, along with her boyfriend Nando and her six friends, have a book club where they meet to read horror books. One day, Angela is harassed by one of her professors, her friends find out and decide to play a practical joke on her to scare him, but it all goes very wrong.
The eight college students decide to make a pact of silence about what happened, however, they are later harassed by a kind of serial killer writer who is writing a novel about them and how he murders them in each chapter. The group of young people fall into a total crisis and begin to distrust each other. Angela goes into a stigma of anxiety, as she is sure that all this is happening because of her.
How will these kids get out of this situation unscathed? Who will be the murderer? What is the dark past that Angela hides and how will she be able to survive that as well?
La trama
Ángela es una estudiante de literatura que está en proceso de escribir su segunda novela, pero posee inseguridades que la retienen y no la dejan avanzar en su creatividad. Ella, junto con su novio Nando y sus seis amigos, tienen un club de lectura donde se reúnen a leer libros de terror. Un día, Ángela es acosada por uno de sus profesores, sus amigos se enteran y deciden hacerle una broma pesada para asustarlo, pero todo sale muy mal.
Los ocho universitarios deciden hacer un pacto de silencio sobre lo sucedido, sin embargo, posteriormente son acosados por una especie de asesino serial escritor que está elaborando una novela sobre ellos y de como los asesina en cada capítulo. El grupo de jóvenes cae en una crisis total y comienzan a desconfiar entre ellos. Ángela entra en un estigma de ansiedad, ya que está segura que todo esto está sucediendo por su culpa.
¿Cómo harán estos chicos para salir ilesos de esta situación? ¿Quién será el asesino? ¿Cuál es el pasado oscuro que esconde Ángela y cómo podrá sobrevivir también a eso?
My opinion
As I always do in this type of Netflix movies, I kept my expectations off; because as we know, it is very difficult to find something good on this platform. I liked the beginning of the film, it conveyed a mystery that needed to be unraveled and in the end it did, which was something I was very grateful for.
As the film played, I could notice ironic details of a typical movie aimed at a young audience, I was expecting something more along the lines of I Know What You Did Last Summer in Spanish version, but it didn't even come close to that.
I liked that each main character had his own personality and well defined, because for a narrative, in this case slashers, each character must expose a remarkable quality that differentiates him from the rest, so the viewer can have a medium with which to identify and feel more empathetic with the film; for example, the guy who is an influencer in the story, many people want to be influencer and I found it quite remarkable especially in this time in which we live.
I thought the performances were good, although not all the main characters had enough prominence, I could not get to know their stories, nor their fears or dreams; as the film seemed to focus more on the main protagonist and the conflict in which she was involved.
Although I didn't find the set design very impressive, I really liked the use of colors to identify an action or relevant part of the story. There were scenes that reminded me of an 80's horror poster, I suppose this was intentional on the part of the general director and cinematographer to give the knowing eye a reminder.
For a Slasher genre film I feel it lacked more action, I didn't find it anything impressive and it just adds up for entertainment nothing more. The idea seems very good to me, in fact, it's the first time I've seen a film of this genre that applies elements such as literature and social networks. It also has twists that some I found predictable, others not so much, but at least they made it worth watching the whole thing.
The ending of this film seemed to me to be more of the same; I don't know whether to qualify it as a tribute to other films of this genre or it was simply a lurid addition that was placed just because the director felt like it. It's one of those typical open endings where you don't know if there will be a sequel or they just wanted to give you a surprise. If they make a sequel to this movie, I won't see it, there are plenty of other things in the repertoire.
Mi opinión
Como siempre hago en este tipo de películas de Netflix, mantuve mis expectativas apagadas; porque como sabemos, es muy difícil encontrar algo bueno en esta plataforma. El principio de la película me gustó, me transmitió un misterio que se debía desentrañar y al final si se hizo, lo cual fue algo que agradecí mucho.
A medida que se iba reproduciendo el filme, pude notar detalles irónicos de una típica película dirigida a un público joven, esperaba algo más al estilo I Know What You Did Last Summer en versión española, pero no llegó ni a los talones de eso.
Me gustó que cada personaje principal tuviera una personalidad propia y bien definida, pues para una narrativa, en este caso slashers, cada personaje debe exponer una cualidad destacable que lo diferencie del resto, así el espectador podrá tener un medio con el cual identificarse y sentirse más compenetrado con la película; por ejemplo, el chico que es influencer dentro de la historia, mucha gente quiere ser influencer y me pareció bastante destacable sobre todo en esta época en que vivimos.
Me parece que las actuaciones estuvieron bien, aunque no todos los personajes principales tuvieron suficiente protagonismo, no pude conocer sus historias, ni sus miedos o sueños; pues la película parecía centrarse más en la protagonista principal y en el conflicto en el que estaba envuelta.
Aunque la escenografía no me pareció muy impactante, me gustó mucho el uso de los colores para identificar una acción o parte relevante de la historia. Hubo escenas que me hicieron recordar a un póster de terror de los 80, supongo que esto fue intencional por parte del director general y el director de fotografía para darle al ojo conocedor un recordatorio.
Para ser un filme de género Slasher siento que le faltó más acción, no me pareció nada impresionante y solo se suma para el entretenimiento nada más. La idea me parece muy buena, de hecho, es la primera vez que veo una película de este género que aplica elementos como la literatura y las redes sociales. También tiene giros que algunos me parecieron predecibles, otros no tanto, pero al menos hicieron que valiera la pena verla completa.
El final de esta película me pareció más de lo mismo; no sé si calificarlo como un homenaje a otras películas de este género o simplemente fue un agregado escabroso que se colocó solo porque al director le dio la gana. Es de esos típicos finales abiertos donde no sabes si habrá una secuela o solamente te querían dar una sorpresa. Si hacen una segunda parte de esta película, no la veré, hay muchas otras cosas más en el repertorio.
Conclusions
Killer Book Club is one of those typical movies that are just for entertainment. It has a good idea in its story, but I think it was not squeezed well enough to give me something amazing. It has an ironic language making references to social issues, with a bit of black humor and with characters you can identify with; even if at the end you feel they don't have much relevance in the plot.
I recommend it if you want something to entertain you on a lazy Sunday or if you are a sensitive person who wants to see something soft horror that causes a lot of impact. Possibly, they will bring out a sequel, since that's what I understood from that ending, and if so, as I said before, I won't watch it; it will most likely be the same as the first part.
Conclusiones
El club de los lectores criminales es de esas típicas películas que solo sirven para el entretenimiento. Tiene una buena idea en su historia, pero creo que no fue lo suficientemente bien exprimida para brindarme algo alucinante. Tiene un lenguaje irónico haciendo referencias a problemáticas sociales, con un poco de humor negro y con personajes con los que puedes identificarte; aunque al final sientas que no tienen mucha relevancia en la trama.
La recomiendo si quieres algo para entretenerte un domingo de descanso o si eres una persona sensible que desea ver algo de terror suave que provoque mucho impacto. Posiblemente, saquen una secuela, ya que es lo que entendí de ese final, y si es así, como he dicho antes, no lo veré; lo más probable es que sea igual que la primera parte.

Al igual que ocurre con algunos libros, a veces, cuando tenemos grandes expectativas respecto a una película o un género en particular, nos condicionamos y nos volvemos más exigentes con la obra. Esta es una crítica sencilla, amena y completa. Saludos, @universoperdido

Grandioso review, no he visto la película porque no es el género que suelo consumir, pero me picó la curiosidad.
Pd: creo que me pasaré por tu blog cada que quiera ver alguna película.
Esta película no impresiona mucho, si tiene algunas partes grotescas, pero nada fuera del otro mundo. Te la recomiendo si buscas algo con que entretenerte.
