The movie Wonka 2023 is a story about the origins of Willy Wonka, whom we all grew up knowing and perhaps fearing a little, like Gene Wilder's character. It is directed by Paul King, the same director of the Paddington movies, and I think it is a beautiful and adorable film, characteristic of this director. The film revolves around the young Willy Wonka who is determined to make a name for himself in the chocolate industry in a strange city, a little Victorian and a little modern. The film begins with Willy waking up in a new city with a suitcase containing dreams and materials for making chocolate. Willy comes from the jungle with his mother, who taught him everything he knows about chocolate, but now he is alone trying to open a chocolate shop and change the world of confectionery, but of course this is not going to be so easy as there are three dark chocolate businessmen who are actually very bad and don't want anyone else to produce chocolate. They are trying to make friends with the chief of police and bribe him with sweets to get Willy out of the business.

La película Wonka 2023 es una historia de los orígenes del Willy Wonka que todos crecimos conociendo y quizás temiendo un poco, como el personaje de Gene Wilder. Está dirigida por Paul King, el mismo director de las películas de Paddington y me parece que es una película bonita y adorable, característica de este director. La película gira en torno al joven Willy Wonka que está decidido a hacerse un nombre en la industria del chocolate en una extraña ciudad, un poco victoriana y un poco moderna, la película comienza con Willy despertándose en una ciudad nueva con una maleta que contiene sueños y material para hacer chocolate. Willy Wonka is played by Timothée Chalamet and I thought he was a good choice, it seems that the character is a naive guy full of dreams, but sometimes he seems a bit lost, the rest of the actors are better, Olivia Colman plays the unfriendly Mrs. Scrubbit and for me she beats them all in the scene she appears in, Hugh Grant appears briefly as Oompa Loompa and the three guys who play the chocolate cartel also do well and Calah Lane as Noodle is a good contrast to Willy.

Willy Wonka está interpretado por Timothée Chalamet y me pareció una buena elección, parece que el personaje es un tipo ingenuo y lleno de sueños, pero a veces parece algo perdido, el resto de los actores son mejores, Olivia Colman interpreta a la antipática Sra. Scrubbit y para mí le gana a todos en casa escena que aparece, Hugh Grant aparece brevemente como Oompa Loompa y los tres tipos que interpretan al cártel del chocolate también lo hacen bien y Calah Lane como Noodle es un buen contraste a Willy.

The visuals are very good with all those strange shiny objects representing Willy's world, some of the animations about how the chocolates are made are impressive, what I'm not convinced about is that the rhythm is uneven, the film sometimes gets stuck between being a comedy and an adventure and at other times showing the protagonist's world in a more serious and profound way and although I understand that it is a prequel, I can't relate this optimistic and likeable Willy to the most disgusting man who endangers the children we meet in the story. I thought the film wanted to tell the audience the story of how a supervillain came about but it didn't know how to do it well. Another thing that doesn't quite convince me is the number of musical numbers, some are good but others are kind of forced in as if the scriptwriter was adding things because it's a musical and it had to be that way, and well the protagonist Timothée Chalamet is not exactly a Broadway singer, he makes the effort but it's not always good.

La parte visual es muy buena con todos esos objetos brillantes y raros que representan el mundo de Willy, algunas animaciones sobre la fabricación de bombones son impresionantes, lo que no me termina de convencer es que el ritmo es desigual, la película algunas veces se atasca entre ser una comedia y aventura y otras en mostrar de una forma más seria y profunda el mundo del protagonista y aunque entiendo que es una precuela, no consigo relacionar este Willy optimista y simpático con el hombre más repugnante y que pone en peligro a los niños que conocemos en la historia, me pareció que la película quiso contar al público la historia de cómo surgió un supervillano pero no supo hacerlo bien. Otra cosa que no me termina de convencer es la cantidad de números musicales, unos son buenos pero otros están como metidos a la fuerza como si el guionista estaba metiendo cosas de más porque es un musical y tenía que ser así, y bueno el protagonista Timothée Chalamet no es precisamente un cantante de Broadway, hace el esfuerzo pero no siempre es bueno.

After all these problems with the plot and the singing and dancing, there's the ending, Willy can finally open his chocolate factory and business is going very well, he has some wonderful sweets that they make and people love them, the cartel is defeated, Mrs. Scrubbit gets her comeuppance and all Willy's friends from the laundry are set free, it's one of those happy endings where everything works out. But if you know anything about the original story of Willy Wonka you know that it doesn't end there. this fun-loving Willy who wants to make the world a happier place and who appreciates his friends so much is going to become a man who doesn't want to be seen, who isolates himself and whose main objective is to scare children to death and I thought the film failed to address this point which is also evident to make sense of the story. The ending also hints that Willy is going to keep coming up with new things and more powerful chocolates, you can see him starting to work on his next master plan, which we can assume is the chocolate factory, but again, knowing what's going to happen next it's impossible to be completely happy with this ending, I still think it lacked a better conclusion, I think it tried to be so sweet that it lost sight of the character and the essence of the story. Score 7/10.

Después de todos estos problemas de la trama y de cantar y bailar está el final, Willy por fin puede abrir su fábrica de chocolate y el negocio va muy bien, tiene unos caramelos maravillosos que hacen y la gente los adora, el cártel es derrotado, la Sra. Scrubbit recibe su merecido y todos los amigos de Willy de la lavandería son liberados, es un final feliz de esos donde todo se resuelve. Pero si sabes algo de la historia original de Willy Wonka sabes que la cosa no termina ahí, este Willy amante de la diversión que quiere hacer del mundo un lugar más feliz y que tanto aprecia a sus amigos se va a convertir en un hombre que no quiere ser visto, que se aísla y cuyo principal objetivo es asustar a los niños hasta la muerte y me pareció que a la película le falto abordar este punto que además es evidente para darle sentido a la historia. El final también da indicios de que Willy va a seguir ideando cosas nuevas y chocolates más potentes, se ve como comienza a trabajar en su próximo plan maestro, que podemos suponer que es la fábrica de chocolate, pero de nuevo, sabiendo lo que va a ocurrir a continuación es imposible estar completamente bien con este final, sigo pensando que faltó una mejor conclusión, creo que intentó ser tan dulce que perdió de vista el carácter y la esencia de la historia. Puntuación 7/10.
