(ESP-ENG) A Real Pain | Sadness is hard - Movie Review!
Hello friends, good vibes to all.
At the last Golden Globes Kieran Culkin took home the award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in this film and will most likely win the Oscar as well. A Real Pain is an original story by Jesse Eisenberg, yes, the man behind the films “Now You See Me” and “Social Network” and who is also up for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The way people assimilate, experience and live certain situations is fascinating because it shows us that each head is a world and that we are configured in different ways. In this film the situation is given by a duel but at the same time detonates other things that in the end end up being “A real pain”.
We begin with David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin), two Jewish cousins living in the United States who were once very close. They decide it's time to reunite as their grandmother has just passed away which meant a lot to both of them. Being obviously Jewish, they decide to take a tour of Poland, where she lived during World War II, to connect with her, her past and her roots in a sort of tribute in her name. As the trip begins to take place the personalities of both begin to collide and David is a quiet and introverted guy while Benji is the opposite, eloquent and unafraid to say things up front.
In addition to all this, Benji is highly unstable and of the two, he was the one who was most affected by the loss of his grandmother, which has led him to have to deal with this grief in a different way. This film shows an emotional journey full of drama and a fresh comedy given by the everyday situations and day to day life between the two, being so opposite personalities there are dialogues and interactions very particular and unique that can generate some laughter in the viewer. Personally I enjoyed it quite a lot, it is a very fresh film but with an important emotional charge because in addition to the grief, the impact of visiting sensitive places for the Jewish community during the Second World War is added and that at least Benji lives it particularly in a more intense way.
At first it may seem a slow and boring film but nothing to see, its plot full of simplicity and everyday life catches you quickly. And what I value most is the background of everything, one that is surely very real and lived by hundreds of people every day. The message it leaves is full of empathy, of understanding the situation of the other, we will never know 100% the reality of the other person because each of them are different; the idea of it all is to seek affinity and understanding by understanding the pain that may be in others. For example, Benji at first glance seems like a cheerful guy but deep down he is completely broken and lonely, David knowing this seeks a way to reach him in the best way. It's quite an introspective journey.
You have to highlight both of them for their performances but what Kieran Culkin does is very remarkable. I think we have all at some point had traits of his personality for various performances that we have gone through so it is very easy to empathize with him. It's a simple character but as I said with a very complicated background and he knows how to show it perfectly; on an emotional level I think it's an interpretation that breaks the fourth wall. Jesse not only acts but he wrote the film and directs it. This has a lot of merit; the thing is that his character, despite being well acted, felt very similar to what I've seen of him in other films. Anyway, here you will see two magnificent performances.
Un film de hora y media apenas que se pasa muy rápido. Vale mucho la pena verlo, es simple, bonito, emotivo, gracioso y bien hecho. Le doy un 8/10. Les dejo el tráiler por aquí y le echan un ojo.
An hour and a half film that goes by very fast. It's very worth watching, it's simple, beautiful, emotional, funny and well made. I give it an 8/10. I leave the trailer here and take a look at it.
¡Un abrazo a todos, nos vemos en la próxima!
Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it.

One of the movies that I certainly will be watching at some point in 2025
