Over last weekend, I had a strong desire to watch a romantic comedy spy movie, leaving me with the decision between "Jennifer López's Shotgun Wedding" and "Chris Evans's Ghosted." After careful consideration, I ultimately opted for "Ghosted," with hopes that the movie would captivate me, just as Chris Evans did in his previous movie, "The Gray Man' released in 2022. Ghosted proved to be an enjoyable and relaxing experience.

Ghosted (2023) was directed by Dexter Fletcher with Apple TV+ as its distributor. This movie is an American romantic-comedy action film. It was written by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Chris McKenna, and Erik Sommers from a story created by Reese and Wernick. The movie starred Chris Evans, and Ana de Armas as the lead characters with Lizze Broadway, Adrien Brody, Ryan Reynolds, Sebastian Stan, and Marwan Kenzari as supporting characters. The movie revolves around Chris Evan (Cole) falling completely overhead for the fascinating Sadie whom he met at the farmers market but soon discovers she's a covert operative and who she confessed to be.

I will be taking a different approach to reviewing this movie. I won't be talking about the plot to avoid spoilers but I will be talking about the things that attracted me to this movie and its flaws. Let's dive straight into it.

Characters.

Chris Evans as Cole

IMG_20230523_171916.jpg

Evans acted as a young man, a farmer, Cole Turner, who is fascinated with agriculture and history. He meets a young woman who he fell for instantly but later discovered she was not who she said she was. I see Evans' performance as a failure here. I was deeply disappointed because of the high expectation I had for this movie. His performance was not realistic to me. It seemed like he was struggling with his role and all he did seemed forced. This movie restricted his talent.

Ana de Armas As Sadie

Armas acted as Sadie, a young woman who encountered Cole at the farmers market spending the whole day with him as an art curator, and then disappears with no contact. Her performance was manageable for me because all the stunts she pulled in the movie were required and necessary because of her role. The only flaw I found with her role was that she had no chemistry with Evans. They both looked tense as they performed the romantic scenes of this movie.

Adrien Brody As Leveque

IMG_20230523_172212.jpg

Brody acted as the main antagonist who was after a CIA agent who is known as the 'The Taxman'. He needed to get a hold of The Taxman to extract information to further the dark agenda he had in mind. For me Brody was the star of the movie, he made the movie entertaining and enjoyable for me. His dark humor and mannerism were what the movie needed to be at least entertaining. He stole the spotlight for me and he acted his villain part well and he was worthy of the role.

Apart from the three characters above, other supporting characters that are in some way surprised with their performance are, Ryan Reynolds, Sebastian Stan, and Marwan Kenzari; their short appearances were worthy and impactful to the plot of the movie. The two lead characters were the big flaw of this movie for me. There was no chemistry, there was tension between both of them and all their performances seemed forced.

Themes In The Plot.

The plot of this movie is rich in quality, I must confess. It was well written and it was the only positive thing that made me watch the movie till end. The storyline is interesting and entertaining regardless of the poor performance of the lead characters.

The plot of this movie has lots of powerful themes that made it rich. It explored themes like; deception, love, trust, betrayal, redemption, family, and Moral Dilemmas. All these themes were connected in a beautiful way that hooked me right from the beginning. The themes made the storyline of this movie flow freely which was easy for me not feel bored or tired of the movie.

My Review And Rating.

In my opinion, this movie would have been a blockbuster if someone else had acted alongside Ana de Armas, Chris Evan wasn't right for the role, thereby it ruined the movie for me. Apart from all the flaws I have talked about, I love the pacing of this movie, good action scenes, average CGI, good location, and the scene arrangements were excellently done. The comedy didn't really sink in well for me, I found nothing funny about comedy dialogue.

Rating this movie, I will give 3.5 out of 5 stars. It was enjoyable because of the storyline, themes of the plot and the antagonist. For an avid rom-com lover, I might not recommend the movie, but still, I recommend this movie to action lovers and spy movie lovers. If you have watched this movie go watch it now.

What an interesting review! I'm glad I wasn't the only one who saw the lapses especially in the chemistry between Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. As you said, I wished someone else took Chris Evans' part. The action was impressive though. Ana's performance was outstanding. Nicely done! 💕 !PIMP !LADY

Yes, I enjoyed Ana's performance it made the movie enjoyable for me. Maybe if it was Jason Statham who took Evan's role, it would interesting. Hahah just a thought.😅 Thank you for taking the time to read my review. I appreciate your comment here.

I think it was a good thing Chris Evans took on this role just to test if he could act as the lovesick guy which well, I enjoyed pretty well. It was great to see him play another role other than the one he's been known to play. Ana was really great.

avatar

Hmmm yeah. The lovesick role doesn't suit him for me😅. I guess I am used to seeing him act as a superhero always and a villain. Ana did fantastic, no doubt. Thank you for dropping your opinion about this movie here. I appreciate the honesty.

I'd love to see him play other roles too.
You're welcome. 🤗

I saw it only because of Ana de Armas. I knew what kind of product it was. Algorithm Cinema. Action scenes with some goofy humor, i.e. the way the main character's family acts, it's too childish, Marvel movie style. This was like watching a continuation of the other movie where Ana de Armas appeared, where Evans had a horrible mustache. I don't even remember the name of that other movie. They were almost identical. Movies to enjoy for a while and forget about. hahaha.

Especially the parents.

I saw some marvel stunts in there from a farmer. How did a farmer come about those stunts within a short period of time. That was unrealistic for me.

where Evans had a horrible mustache.

You remember that movie by his mustache 😂 always. The Gray man.

You explain this movie very well. I'm not much for romantic comedies, but if it's a movie where Brody comes from then I'm interested. It's a shame the lack of chemistry between the main characters, I think they should have rehearsed it better.

Brody impressed me. He was one of the reasons I finished the movie he made the movie enjoyable for me. His humor was not missed.

I'm glad you liked it, personally this movie or the romantic comedy/action genre is not one I like to watch, but I decided to give it a chance and despite having low expectations, I didn't like it.

I think Evans' character is a madman, no one should behave like that guy, it's a pretty wrong message and I think that's what I liked the least because actually the plot, both actors as protagonists, the dialogues, are things that I didn't like although there is a correct work in some action scenes, for example the chase in the mountain and the final confrontation in the restaurant.

😂 I couldn't agree less with this. I think the chase at mountain and final confrontation were the best part of the action scenes in the movie.

This is a fair and honest review. I haven't seen this movie. I think the title puts me off. Ghosted. The movie came out around the time that the concept of 'ghosting' began appearing in pop culture, so I thought the makers of this movie were just jumping in the bandwagon.

In my opinion, this movie would have been a blockbuster if someone else had acted alongside Ana de Armas, Chris Evan wasn't right for the role, thereby it ruined the movie for me.

Ouch. This is a great line because it cuts to the chase. It's interesting how this character didn't click with you because of his 'forced' performance. Excellent review!

Honestly I was disappointed but the movie still has some few positives but majority of it are negatives. Thank you so much for stopping by. I appreciate your comment and support.

Thanks for the suggestion. In the last few days the comedy movies watched have been really bad for me hahaha. I better take a break from them. Thanks for the details on your content. 🤗 It's been a pleasure reading you.

It's a pleasure to have you here. You better take that break and you know explore other movies to spice up things

It was entertaining for a popcorn flick but nothing to write home about. A read a comment somewhere which I found hilarious - it's essentially the type of movie you would expect an AI to make based on the premise.
