A couple of days ago I uploaded the review of Bestia, a Chilean animated short film released in 2021 that tells the story of Ingrid Olderöck, a former DINA agent (the Chilean Gestapo during the dictator Augusto Pinochet) and which won important awards, including an Oscar nomination that raised many expectations because precisely a few years ago, the country had triumphed in that category for the first time in the history of Latin America.

Hace un par de días subí la reseña de Bestia, un cortometraje de animación chileno estrenado en 2021 que cuenta la historia de Ingrid Olderöck, una ex agente de la DINA (la Gestapo chilena en tiempos del dictador Augusto Pinochet) y que obtuvo premios importantes, incluida una nominación a los premios Oscar que levantó muchas expectativas porque precisamente algunos años atrás, el país había triunfado en en esa categoría por primera vez en la historia de latinoamérica.

In that post (whose link you can find at the end of this one) I focused on talking about the story of the woman portrayed, instead of telling the story shown in the short because, given that its duration is barely 15 minutes, any revelation or advance of the plot represented a big part of the film, in terms of proportion. And if it was already difficult in that case, what can be said about a short film that is a fictional story and also lasts only 11 minutes, or 9 minutes if you subtract the credits? Historia de un oso (Bear Story) is a Chilean animated short film, directed by Gabriel Osorio and written by Daniel Castro together with the director, in which the story of a bear is literally portrayed, which, as in the great majority of animated productions, is not only a bear: it's the symbol of something more. Unlike what I did with Beast, here I do have to talk about many things and scenes from the story, so spoilers are inevitable. The short begins with a Bear who we see working in his small puppet theater, whose figurines are made of tin. We get the impression that he's assembling or repairing the pieces of his theater, before going out into the streets of the city to show his work. However, a quick look at the character's home reveals that the emptiness we see and feel was once occupied. A photograph, some extra chairs, an empty bed, toys leaning against a shelf, we barely see these things for a second, but we understand that this lonely bear was not always alone.

En ese post (cuyo link pueden encontrar al fnal de este) me centré en hablar de la historia de la mujer retratada, en lugar de contar la historia mostrada en el corto porque, dado que su duración es de apenas 15 minutos, cualquier revelación o adelanto de la trama representaba una gran parte del film, en términos de proporción. Y si ya era difícil en ese caso, ¿qué decir de un cortometraje que es una historia de ficción y que además dura solamente 11 minutos, o 9 minutos si se resta el tiempo de los créditos? Historia de un oso (Bear Story) es un cortometraje de animación chileno, dirigido por Gabriel Osorio y escrito por Daniel Castro junto al director en el que se retrara literalmente la historia de un oso que, como en la gran mayoría de producciones animadas, no es solamente un oso: es el símbolo de algo más. A diferencia de lo que hice con Bestia, acá sí tengo que hablar de muchas cosas y escenas de la historia, así que los spoilers son inevitables. El corto inicia con un Oso al que vemos trabajar en su pequeño teatro de marionetas, cuyos figurines están hechos de hojalata. Nos da la impresión de estar ensamblando o reparando las piezas de su teatro, antes de salir a las calles de la ciudad a mostrar su espectáculo. Sin embargo, una rápida mirada a la vivienda del personaje nos revela que el vacío que vemos y sentimos alguna vez estuvo ocupado. Una fotografía, unas sillas adicionales, una cama vacía, juguetes arrimados en una repisa, apenas vemos estas cosas por un segundo, pero entendemos que este solitario oso no siempre estuvo solo.

Although it is not mentioned anywhere, when the bear goes out into the street to show his little theatre to the public, those cobbled and sloping streets and above all, some tall buildings and the sound of seagulls in the distance, made me think of Valparaíso, one of the most important port cities in Chile and then, when reviewing the production details, I confirmed that Valpo was one of the inspirations for the design of the sets.

A pesar de no mencionarse en ninguna parte, cuando el oso sale a la calle para exhibir su pequeño teatro al público, esas calles empedradas e inclinadas y sobre todo, algunas construcciones elevadas y el sonido de las gaviotas a lo lejos, me hicieron pensar en Valparaíso, una de las ciudades puerto más importantes de Chile y después, al revisar la ficha de la producción, confirmé que Valpo fue una de las inspiraciones para el diseño de los escenarios.

But the most beautiful scene, and also the most painful, is the central part of the short, in which, at the request of the public, the bear puts his theatre into operation and tells a story that, we deduce, is his own, because we recognize in the figurines the same creatures that were in the photograph of his room. The bear shows us a family of bears (father, mother and a son) whose peaceful life is interrupted by the irruption of a large circus in the city. Since all the inhabitants are animals, circus officials are dedicated to entering houses to kidnap different individuals. For human beings, the circus is entertainment, but for animals, a circus is a prison. So, officials? Breaking and entering? Kidnapping? Torture? Prison? Bear Story doesn't only tell us that: it's talking about the time of the dictatorship in Chile. It is inevitable to relate the story shown to us in the small theatre with the story that the bear must have lived, but then, when the story comes to an end and the audience thanks them with a coin for what they have just seen, this happy ending for the figurines only accentuates the sad reality of their creator. The three little tin figures embrace each other, but we know that when the bear returns home, no one will be waiting for him. His wife and son are no longer with him, dead? exiled? missing? We don't know, but it doesn't matter: he has lost them.

Pero la escena más bonita, y también la más dolorosa, es la parte central del corto, en la que ante la petición del público, el oso pone en fucionamiento su teatro y cuenta una historia que, deducimos, es la suya propia, porque reconocemos en los figurines, a las mismas criaturas que estaban en la fotografía de su habitación. El oso nos muestra a una familia de osos (padre, madre y un hijo) cuya vida tranquila es interrumpida por la irrupción de un gran circo en la ciudad. Dado que todos los habitantes son animales, oficiales del circo se dedican a entrar a las casas para secuestrar a diferentes individuos. Para los seres humanos, el circo es entretenimiento, pero para los animales, un circo es una prisión. Entonces ¿oficiales? ¿allanamientos de morada? ¿secuestro? ¿torturas? ¿prisión? Historia de un oso no nos cuenta solamente eso: está hablando de la época de la dictadura en Chile. Es inevitable relacionar la historia que se nos muestra en el pequeño teatro con la historia que debió vivir el oso, pero entonces, cuando la historia llega al final y el público agradece con una moneda lo que acaba de ver, ese final feliz de los figurines sólo acentúa la triste realidad de su creador. Las tres pequeñas figuras de hojalata se abrazan, pero sabemos que al volver a casa, al oso no lo estará esperando nadie. Su esposa y su hijo ya no están con él, ¿muertos? ¿exiliados? ¿desaparecidos? No lo sabemos, pero da lo mismo: los ha perdido.

Although this story may be (and was) that of thousands of Chileans, the director confessed that it was based on the memories of his grandfather who, after the coup in Chile, was imprisoned for two years until he managed to go into exile in Mexico. Almost fifty years later, his grandson managed to honor his story and that of thousands of compatriots with this beautiful animated piece that went around the world reaping awards, including the most important: the Oscar for Best Animated Film. The first Oscar for a Chilean production in history.

Si bien esta historia puede ser (y fue) la de miles de chilenos, el director confesó que se basó en las memorias de su abuelo quien, tras el golpe de Estado en Chile, estuvo preso durante dos años hasta que logró exiliarse en México. Casi cincuenta años más tarde, su nieto logró honrar su historia y la de miles de compatriotas con esta hermosa pieza animada que le dio la vuelta al mundo cosechando premios, incluyendo el más importante: el Oscar a Mejor Película de Animación. El primer Oscar para una producción chilena en la historia.

The script is wonderful, the symbols powerful and the metaphors accurate. But the technical aspects of Bear Story are as wonderful as the background. Although the animation is mainly stop motion (and that wonderful tinplate appearance of the figurines), computer animation, 2D drawings and 3D animation were also used, combining everything in a very harmonious way. And added to that, I think that the other key element in the public's response was the music, by Dënver (Chilean indie pop duo) and Felicia Morales. Those metallic notes typical of music boxes and those slow and melancholic melodies that make us feel joy and sadness at the same time, reflect very well the emotional duality of the story that is told to us. As expected, the triumph of this short at the Academy Awards was a great event for Chile and the work has been widely disseminated and honored in various ways, it has even been published in the country in the form of a children's book, and it continues to be recognized as one of the country's most important artistic achievements internationally. It's currently available to watch on Mubi and Amazon Prime Video for all those who have not yet approached this story or for those who, like me, want to see it again after some time. El guión es maravilloso, los símbolos poderosos y las metáforas certeras. Pero los aspectos técnicos de Historia de un oso son tan maravillosos como el fondo. Si bien la animación es principalmente en stop motion (y esa maravillosa apariencia de hojalata de los figurines), también se utilizó animación computarizada, dibujos en 2D y animación en 3D, combinando todo de manera muy armónica. Y sumado a ello, creo que el otro elemento clave en la respuesta del público, fue la música, a cargo de Dënver (dúo de indie pop chileno) y Felicia Morales. Esas notas metalizadas propias de las cajitas musicales y esas melodías lentas y melancólicas que nos hacen sentir alegría y tristeza al mismo tiempo, reflejan muy la dualidad emocional de la historia que se nos cuenta. Como era de esperarse, el triunfo de este corto en los premios de la academia fue un gran acontecimiento para Chile y la obra ha sido ampliamente difundida y honrada de diversas formas, incluso ha sido editada en el país en forma de libro infantil, y sigue siendo reconocida como uno de los logros artísticos más importantes del país a nivel internacional.
