Today I want to join this initiative of films that inspire us. It was not easy to choose the film. However, in the turbulent times we are living in, I think I should talk about a film that moved me a lot, while at the same time it scared me: Die welle (The Wave).
This is a 2008 film directed by Dennis Gansel, with a script by himself and Peter Thorwarth.
Don't think that because it's from 2008 it must be seen as an old film. Nothing could be further from the truth.
So you understand what I'm talking about. The wave is based on real events. Its origin dates back to 1967 when an experiment was carried out at Cubberluey High School in Palo Alto (California).
Professor Rainer Wenger was giving a class on fascism. The students, incredulous at what they had heard, doubted that, at that time (or in our own time) a fascist and totalitarian regime like that could be repeated. They even questioned whether it had been created in Nazi Germany at that time.
So, the professor decided to show that, not only was that how he explained it to them, but that, if we do not take care, this event could be repeated.

On the first day of classes (experiment) he gave them an instruction that they had to follow. Something simple, like getting up and saying hello when he came in.
Each class added something else: wearing a white shirt, a greeting, a logo, etc. Various things that distinguished them from the rest.
There came a time when the boys themselves were the ones who added actions to be carried out.
Of course, there were always those who did not want to do it, at the beginning. There were several, in fact. But then, seeing that the rest did it, they began to do the same as the others, just to not be outside of the wave, not to be different. In fact, they adopted these instructions and way of behaving more strongly than the rest who did accept from the beginning.
Others never accepted. But that's how the world works
Fascism is a real thing.
The experiment was not only a success (negative, but a success). Wegner even let the experiment get out of hand and ended up as a kind of leader before the students, in the position of dictator. They adored him.
Wegner demonstrated what I just stated.
Years later, Dennis Gansel filmed The Wave and premiered it at the Sundance festival, becoming a total success.
No one remains indifferent after finishing The Wave. It's impossible. With so many slogans, so many characters repeating the actions and measures taken by Wegner in his experiment worldwide, to tell the truth, it's scary.
We cannot take for granted that democracy is here to stay. That is what inspired me to do The Wave, to fight any hint of fascism and to defend our democracy, our rights to be treated as equals.
I won't talk about the movie for fear of spoiling it for you. Watch the movie and you will know why I chose it for this initiative.

Hoy quiero unirme a esta iniciativa de películas que nos inspiran. No fue fácil elegir la película. Sin embargo, en los tiempos tan convulsos que estamos viviendo, creo que debo hablar de un filme que me conmovió muchísimo, al mismo tiempo que me dio miedo: Die welle (La ola).
Esta es una película del 2008 dirigida por Dennis Gansel, con guión de él mismo y Peter Thorwarth.
No crean que por ser del 2008 debe verse como un filme viejo. Nada más lejos de la realidad.
Para que entiendan de lo que hablo. La ola está basada en hechos reales. Su origen data del año 1967 cuando en Palo Alto (California) se hizo un experimento en la Cubberluey High School.
El profesor Rainer Wenger daba una clase sobre el facismo. Los estudiantes, incrédulos ante lo escuchado, dudaron que, en aquel tiempo (o en nuestro propio tiempo) pudiera repetirse un régimen facista y totalitario como aquel. Incluso, cuestionaban que se hubiera creado en la Alemania nazi de entonces.
De modo que, el profesor, decidió demostrar que, no solo fue así como les explicó, sino que, de no cuidarnos, podría repetirse este hecho.

El primer día de clases (experimento) les dio una indicación que debían cumplir. Algo sencillo, como levantarse y saludar cuando él entrara.
Cada clase añadía algo más: llevar camisa blanca, un saludo, un logo, etc. Varias cosas que los distinguiera del resto.
Llegó un momento en que los propios muchachos eran los que añadían acciones a cumplir.
Por supuesto, siempre hubo quien no quiso hacerlo, al inicio. Fueron varios, de hecho. Pero luego, al ver que el resto lo hacía, ellos comenzaron a hacer lo mismo que los demás, solo por no estar fuera de la ola, no ser diferente. Incluso, adoptaron estas indicaciones y modo de comportamiento con mayor fuerza que el resto que sí aceptó desde el inicio.
Otros, nunca aceptaron. Pero así funciona el mundo
El facismo es algo real.
El experimento, no solo fue un éxito (negativo, pero éxito) A Wegner, incluso se le fue de la mano el experimento y terminó de especie de líder ante los alumnos, en la posición del dictador. Lo adoraban.
Wegner demostró lo que recién afirmé.
Años después, Dennis Gansel filmó La ola y la estrenó en el festival de Sundance, convirtiéndose en un éxito total.
Nadie queda indiferente luego de terminar La ola. Es imposible. Con tantas consignas, tantos personajes repitiendo a nivel mundial las acciones y medidas tomadas por Wegner en su experimento, a decir verdad, asusta.
No podemos dar por sentado que la democracia ha llegado para quedarse. A eso me inspiró La ola, a combatir cualquier indicio de facismo y a defender nuestra democracia, nuestros derechos a ser tratados como iguales.
No hablaré de la película por miedo a hacerles un spoiler. Vean la película y sabrán por qué la elijo para esta iniciativa.
