Companion (2025)
Amidst all the exam tension I still found a way to stay calm, calm enough to even watch a movie. A relatively short movie (1 hr 30 minutes), but a movie nonetheless. This is the first 2025 movie I have seen this year. All the others are from previous years, and this one was surprisingly good. No long talk, I give you Companion.
PLOT
Iris is head over heels for Josh, I mean why wouldn't she be, she was built to do that. Iris is one of many "Companion" robots built for Josh and many others like him who either don't have the time or aren't capable of finding a partner.
They're meeting up with some of Josh's old friends for the weekend. Things are going well for Iris and Josh, and they're both having the best time of their lives, but then things take a turn after Josh hacks into Iris's firmware and she starts doing things she's not supposed to do.
MY THOUGHTS
First things first, whoever put Horror as one of the genres of this movie needs to be fined for that. This doesn't even meet the criteria to be classified as horror. I watched it at midnight thinking I'd be getting some premium horror but in the end, I'm sure I ended up laughing more than being startled. Sure, there were some parts that were unsettling, but not for the scene itself, just that the thought of how that would feel in real life.
I feel like it'd fit more in the thriller genre than the horror genre. Once you get past the whole "this is not a horror movie" phase you start to enjoy the movie. When I saw a short scene on tiktok, I thought I already knew how the movie was going to go, and boy was I wrong. The movie took a whole different direction from the one I expected and I enjoyed that.
From the start I can sense budget films, and although this one was a budget film, it's one of the few where they manage to do it right, the scenes, the acting, the effects all top notch, and clearly others agree cause apparently it 3x it's budget in just three days from release.
Jack Quaid was one of the reasons I wanted to see this film, I watched him in The Boys, and he did really well there, so I wanted to see him in a different light. Funny enough, I couldn't see him in a different light because his character here and in the boys are quite similar. All the actors stood out for me, especially Sophie Thatcher, she did such a good job as Iris, I was captivated by some scenes.
Overall, I'd give this movie an 8/10. It was interesting and I'm happy I didn't feel like I wasted my time afterwards. Highly recommend.
This is probably the third time I have come across a review of this movie. I need to watch this to see what's the hype about.
Thanks to you for writing such a good review.
Oh Fr? Didn't know others had reviewed it. You should watch. It's interesting
I will once I got the time.
They really should make more 90-Minute movies instead of the 110+ minutes which right now seems to have become the standard. Really enjoyed Companion myself especially because I went in fully blind not konwing anything about the plot which is the way to go.
Yeah, it seems like people's attention span is dropping so they're making movies to cater to that. I prefer series cause they're longer and can be built upon, but in times like this, a short snack of a short movie is nice.
Yeah, going completely blind to the plot makes it a better watch.
