Settings for the play

It's a village setting. A small village in the interior of Doha, the houses are made with muds and thatches and the village is sparsely populated with farming and fishing as their major occupation. A stream flows round about the small town and is their source of drinking water. Even though they claim to have accepted Christianity, most of them still engaged in their fetish practices

Storyline

Long ago, before the birth of Bagu, the villagers lived as one big family. Aza, who was the king of Lahunta village, adopted Raphael after the death of his father. He didn't refuse him anything, he allowed Raphael to use his farmlands as his own and lived in one of his huts. People who didn't know of Raphael assumed he was the king's son. Raphael grew up and got married in the king's palace and soon had children. The children also lived in the palace and enjoyed the king's benefits. Raphael before his death didn't tell his children the story of his adoption, so they grew up thinking Raphael was the king's son. Before Aza's death, he called his son Bagu, and told him everything he needed to know, about his farmlands and how he had adopted Raphael after his father's death- a story Raphael's children didn't know.

The Conflict

As Raphael's children grew, they began to envy the throne. They saw themselves as the rightful ones to be enthroned if the king died. They also wanted a shift in rulership and connived with some elders to help murder the king in a fetish way. Bagu at this time had received a call of God and was a pastor in his own town. Just like the saying, "a prophet is not honored in his hometown" Bagu was not regarded. Despite his several warnings to his dad about the dreams he had about him, his father ignored him and at one point it led to a conflict. When the elders noticed he was having a fight with his father, they took that opportunity to strike. The king had an accident and died, leaving behind just the children who both sought for power.

The elders who knew the history of the family were bribed to side with Raphael's children but Bagu had in detail the documentaries his father had left behind. It became a fight for the throne and farmland. Raphael's children claimed their father was Aza's brother and heir to the throne and Bagu wouldn't allow strangers take his rightful ownership of the throne and his father's possessions.

Difficult decision

Bagu knew the throne had some fetish things attached to it if he wanted to be king and must bow to it. It became a tough decision to take. He wondered whether to hold on to his priesthood call or keep it aside for the throne. On several occasions they attacked Bagu both physically in his farmland and spiritually but didn't succeed and they resolved to accuse him of killing his dad. But Bagu had people who were on his side, one of these people was an elderly man who knew the history of Aza and Raphael. Now Bagu needed to protect himself and the old man from being harmed. This battle for kingship was between people who would have called themselves brothers but the greed for power took over them.

Resolution

The gods aren't a thing to joke with, this they realized after one of Raphael's children forcefully took the throne. The gods kill anyone who isn't rightful for the throne. Madu died a few months later, hit by a force while he was in one of the farmlands. But Bagu couldn't inherit the throne, he chose his priesthood and the throne was left vacant waiting for an heir who was only 7 at the time.

See what we call the real test of faith, I am so happy that Bagu didn't get carried away by the throne and forsake his calling even though it was his by birthright. Who knows, if he had allowed himself to taken away by the love of power, he would have died just like his father?

I also see the king being at fault by not making it clear to everyone that Raphael was adopted, the heart of men is extremely evil. Raphael may have a good heart but his descendants might not. The king should have, specific things and if he was giving to give Raphael inheritance, it should also be stated out inorder to avoid problem in the future. Well, it's such a big lesson for us.

Rightly said, sometimes making things clear to our children would save future crisis

It's sad that the unruly children were ignorant and arrogant, even to the demise of their family.

I think this is very well crafted and a good story. I particularly liked the names of the characters.
