Artificial intelligence is still a big question that generates many questions, concerns and even fears. Some think that it is a powerful tool that makes our lives easier by assisting us in our tasks. Others, on the contrary, believe that its existence means a replacement of humans in the workplace. From the industrial revolution to the present day, this is the great paradox of the human being in the face of the advance of the machine.
This paradox is what is posed in the film Simulant, released in April 2023 and directed by April Mullen. The plot takes place in a location in Canada, a place where all humans are controlled by a SIM, which is monitored by military forces. Each person has the possibility of buying a simulant and to do so must accept the control rules made by the company that manages the system. Through this, the government can control everyone's life.
The film tells the story of Faye, a widow who tries to replace the absence of her husband, who died in an accident, with Evan, a man whose memory she has erased by turning him into a Simulant, by inserting her husband's sim, with the help of a technician who does maintenance on the system, in order to have love back with her. This will alert the authorities who will go after her..
The plot poses many questions: is it possible to live controlled by a machine? It is undoubtedly a critique of the incessant desire to replace the human by technology and on the other hand, it raises a moral problem: science at the service of military interests and economic powers can do deep damage. If artificial intelligence is used to manipulate people's minds, would this be ethical, who would benefit from this information powerhouse, and how could large economic corporations make use of this data to sell more? Faced with an exercise of future simulation, the director leads us to look at the benefits and contradictions of living in a world governed by AI, without any control.
Although it can contribute to our lives in many ways, it can never replace us. Artificial intelligences do not manage themselves.
Some critics of AI have revealed that it is possible to enter into another person's thoughts and plagiarize them, which is precisely what the film focuses on. Since a large group of people have been robbed of their identity to replace it with a sim of others who have died. In this way, whoever controls the sim can have their loved ones back in a second life, can have access to their memory and disappear it and manage the will of that person.
The plot finally shows that the system can be breached and reset. Humans can resume the normalcy of their lives by returning to the past.
If the world is controlled by machines, believing in the soul, falling in love, having memories, family, belonging to a place would be a rarity. Humans with money and power could easily access everyone's life, the dead could live and plagiarism would be massive, authenticity would disappear and we humans would only be an object of the central system.

La inteligencia artificial sigue siendo una gran interrogante que genera muchas preguntas, inquietudes e incluso, miedos. Algunos piensan que es un instrumento poderoso que nos facilita la vida a través de la asistencia de las tareas. Otros, por el contrario, consideran que su existencia significa un reemplazo de los humanos en los puestos de trabajo. Desde la revolución industrial a nuestros días, ésta es la gran paradoja del ser humano frente al avance de la máquina.
Esta paradoja es lo que plantea la película Silumant, estrenada en abril de 2023 y dirigida por April Mullen. La trama ocurre en una locación de Canadá, un lugar donde todos los seres humanos son controlados por un SIM, el cual es vigilado por fuerzas militares. Cada persona tiene la posibilidad de comprar un simulant y para ello deberá aceptar las normas de control que hace la empresa que administra el sistema. A través de este, el gobierno puede dirigir la vida de todos.
La película cuenta la historia de Faye una viuda que intenta reemplazar la ausencia de su esposo, fallecido en un accidente, por Evan, un hombre al que ella ha borrado la memoria convirtiéndolo en un Simulant, al insertar el sim de su esposo, con ayuda de un técnico que hace mantenimiento al sistema, con el fin de volver a tener a su amor consigo. Esto alertará a las autoridades quienes irán tras su búsqueda.
La trama nos coloca ante muchas interrogantes: ¿es posible vivir controlado por una máquina? Es sin duda una crítica al incesante deseo de sustituir lo humano por la tecnología y por otro lado, nos plantea un problema moral: la ciencia al servicio de intereses militares y de poderes económicos puede hacer profundos daños. Si la inteligencia artificial se utiliza para manipular las mentes de las personas, ¿sería esto ético?, ¿quién se beneficiaría de esta central de información? ¿Cómo las grandes corporaciones económicas podrían hacer uso de esos datos para vender más? Ante un ejercicio de simulación futura, el director nos lleva a mirar en una balanza los beneficios y las contradicciones que significa vivir en un mundo gobernado por la IA, sin control alguno.
Aunque ésta pueda contribuir en nuestra vida en muchos sentidos, jamás podrá sustituirnos. Las inteligencias artificiales no se manejan solas.
Algunos críticos de la IA han revelado que a través de esta es posible entrar en los pensamientos de otra persona y plagiarlos, justamente, en esto centra el argumento la película. Puesto que un numeroso grupo de personas les ha sido robada su identidad para suplantarla por un sim de otros que fallecieron. De esta forma, quien controla el sim puede volver a tener consigo, en una segunda vida, a sus seres queridos, puede tener acceso a su memoria y desaparecerla y manejar la voluntad de esa persona.
La trama demuestra finalmente que el sistema puede ser violado y reiniciado y los humanos pueden retomar la normalidad de sus vidas volviendo al pasado.
Si el mundo es controlado por máquinas, creer en el alma, enamorarse, tener recuerdos, familia, pertenecer a un lugar sería una rareza. Los seres humanos con dinero y poder podrían acceder fácilmente a la vida de todos, los muertos podrían vivir y el plagio fuera masivo, la autenticidad desparecería y los humanos solo seriamos un objeto de la central de un sistema.
