El Coronel no tiene quién le escriba (ESP/ENG)
I have read several novels by García Márquez, but honestly I had no idea that there was a film adaptation of the work El coronel no tiene quien le escriba, until yesterday, checking the Netflix catalog in search of something interesting I found it, so I went to see it, finding the pleasant surprise that it is a very faithful adaptation, but first let me tell you what it is about, so you have a little context
He leído varias novelas de García Márquez, pero honestamente no tenía la más remota idea de que hubiese una adaptación cinematográfica de la obra El coronel no tiene quien le escriba, hasta que ayer, revisando el catalogo de Netflix en busca de algo interesante la encontré, así que me amé a verla, encontrando la gratísima sorpresa de que es una adaptación muy fiel, pero en primer lugar permítanme decirles de qué se trata, para que tengan un poco de contexto.
Contexto/Context
The colonel lives with his sick wife and constantly goes to the port waiting for the mail, as he wishes to receive a letter announcing the long-awaited assignment of a pension for his years of service, while this happens his shortages increase on the one hand is the asthma of his wife demand medicines, the mortgage of the house and daily expenses. The only thing they have of value is a fine fighting rooster, inherited from their only son who was killed for political reasons, although some say it was a woman's fault. The elderly are debating whether or not to sell the fighting rooster to cover their expenses, and while some want to take advantage of them, others just want to help them.
El coronel vive con su esposa enferma y constantemente va al puerto en espera de la correspondencia, ya que desea recibir una carta que le anuncie la tan anhelada asignación de una pensión por sus años de servicio, mientras esto ocurre sus carencias aumentan por un lado está el asma de su esposa demanda medicinas, la hipoteca de la casa y los gastos diarios. Lo único que tienen de valor es un gallo fino de pelea, herencia de su único hijo que murió asesinado por asuntos políticos, aunque hay quienes afirman que fue por causas de una mujer. Los ancianos se debaten entre vender o no el gallo de pelea para solventar los gastos, y mientras que algunos quieren aprovecharse de ellos, otros solo quieren ayudarlos.
Opinion
The story is not very deep and there are few characters, but it still serves to portray a reality, the ideals, where they lead us once we manage to achieve and realize the ideals. After all, old age comes relentlessly and there neither titles nor victories are able to solve the most basic needs, however one can also cling to the fact that precisely for that one must fight for ideals and just causes, to reach old age investing every day in trying to make this world a better place.
La historia no es demasiado profunda y hay pocos personajes, pero aún así sirve para retratar una realidad, los ideales, a dónde nos conducen una vez que logramos alcanzar y concretar los ideales. Al fin y al cabo la vejez llega implacablemente y allí ni los títulos ni las victorias son capaces de solventar las necesidades más básicas, sin embargo también uno se puede aferrar al hecho de que precisamente para eso se debe luchar por los ideales y las causas justas, para alcanzar la vejez invirtiendo cada día en intentar hacer de este mundo un lugar mejor.
I believe that both the book and the film, the story itself, is a social critique of the way in which the government and society itself treats those who are vulnerable, how sometimes priorities are overturned on something so banal, as in this case, the rooster, and not on the welfare of two people who are already in the twilight of their lives, who have fought for a better world and who have also lost everything, even their only son.
Creo que tanto el libro como el film, la historia en si misma, es una crítica social a la forma en la que el gobierno y la sociedad misma trata a los que son vulnerables, como a veces las prioridades se vuelcan sobre algo tan banal, como en este caso, el gallo, y no en el bienestar de dos personas que ya están en el ocaso de sus vidas, que han luchado por un mundo mejor y que además lo han perdido todo, incluso hasta su único hijo.
The performances are very good and, although the original story takes place in a Colombian setting, it is not at all shocking that the setting has been changed to Mexico, since the Latin American struggles and conflicts have been practically the same. By the way, I was pleasantly surprised to find the talented Salma Hayek in the cast.
Las actuaciones son muy buenas y, aunque la historia original transcurre en un escenario colombiano, no resulta chocante en lo absoluto que el escenario haya sido cambiado por México, ya que as luchas latinoamericanas y los conflictos han sido prácticamente los mismos. Por cierto, me llevé una muy grata sorpresa al encontrar a la talentosa Salma Hayek en el elenco.
Anyway, whether you have read the book or not, I recommend this movie that in many occasions, in several scenes can be very touching and reflective. Thank you for your attention, see you another time God willing.
En fin, tanto si han leído el libro como si no, les recomiendo esta película que en muchas ocasiones, en varias escenas puede resultar muy conmovedora y reflexiva. Gracias por su atención, nos vemos en otro momento Dios mediante.
