El club de la medianoche o "The Midnight Club" es una serie de drama y terror del año 2022 dirigida por Mike Flannagan (The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Fall of the House of Usher...) que cuando se estrenó vi el póster y por alguna razón decidí en ese momento que no llamaba mi atención, así que no la vi. En estos días apareció en mi inicio de Netflix y como me estoy poniendo al día con diversas producciones de terror, pensé, ¿por qué no?, por lo que termine viéndola, me alegra decir que me gusto, incluso sentí una especie de cariño hacia ella, me genero como una nostalgia extraña.

Esta serie está basada en el libro del mismo nombre escrito por Christopher Pike, un escritor de novelas de misterio, ciencia ficción y terror que enfoco sus obras mayormente a un público juvenil, pero que se ganaron el cariño de lectores de todas las edades. Este libro no me lo he leído, pero sí sabia de su existencia porque una prima mayor que yo lo tenía junto a los populares libros de terror juvenil "Escalofríos".

La serie comienza con nuestra protagonista principal Ilonka, una chica inteligente que pronto va a ingresar a la universidad, pero sus sueños se ven arruinados porque es diagnosticada con cáncer y aunque recibe tratamiento, no mejora, su cáncer es terminal. Ante tal noticia, es difícil no decaer, pero Ilonka es determinada, tiene esperanza, así que decide investigar soluciones alternativas por su cuenta y en sus investigaciones termina dando con el caso de Julia Jayne, una chica diagnosticada con su mismo tipo de cáncer años atrás que de manera milagrosa se curó mientras residía en la mansión Brightcliffe, un hospicio para jóvenes con enfermedades terminales que cuenta con un pasado un poco oscuro que hará que Ilonka al llegar se embarque en una serie de situaciones inquietantes y misteriosas junto a sus compañeros, quienes integran "El club de medianoche", club del que Ilonka inevitablemente termina formando parte.

El club es una tradición que se mantiene por los jóvenes del hospicio a lo largo de los años, los integrantes nunca son los mismos, pero el club y su esencia se mantiene, jóvenes reunidos para contar historias de misterio, terror y un poco de ciencia ficción que no solo están unidos por sus padecimientos o ganas de contar historias, sino que también pactan que quien sea el primero en irse, debe manifestarse o dar una señal desde "el otro lado", cosa que me resulto de lo más interesante y es un gran gancho para contar una historia.

La estética de la serie me encanto, amo la idea de una casa misteriosa y quienes me leen saben que amo lo vintage, al estar la serie ambientada en los años 90 todo es muy retro, mis ojos fueron felices (casa vintage, naturaleza, colores vibrantes... amén). En cuanto a los personajes me alegra decir que me gustaron las actuaciones de todos los actores, hay mucha diversidad y diferentes trasfondos que nos muestran las distintas realidades de los mismos, pienso que lo más bonito es ver como a pesar de que son tan distintos, se respetan y se apoyan los uno a los otros. Ahora, no porque me hayan gustado las actuaciones, significa que me hayan gustado los personajes, al menos no todos, el personaje de Ilonka me desespero muchas veces, podía llegar a ser muy terca y ensimismada, pero, ¿cómo juzgarla?, ella no quiere morir (de paso la cara de la actriz me recordó a la cara de un primo, lo que se me hizo extraño plop)... Los demás personajes están bien, a veces algunos se pasaban de groseros sin necesidad, pero, otra vez, van a morir, se entiende que tienen muchas emociones negativas dentro de ellos, están cansados.

Creo que muchas personas al comenzar a ver El club de la medianoche esperan una serie escalofriante que los haga asustarse, pero la realidad es que el terror no es tan intenso porque resulta que la serie es realmente un drama sobre la inevitable muerte o por lo menos esa fue mi conclusión. Nos encontramos con personas muy jóvenes que a penas están empezando a vivir de verdad, teniendo que enfrentarse a la cruda realidad de que pronto van a morir, su consuelo es compartir sus últimos días juntos y contar historias de terror que de alguna manera los ayudan a lidiar con todo lo que están viviendo, ya que cada historia tiene parte de ellos, parte de quienes son, sus miedos, sueños, esperanzas y circunstancias, mentiría si dijera que no llore unas cuantas veces.

El club de medianoche se desarrolla entre lo que sucede en el presente, algunos fragmentos del pasado y las historias ficticias contadas por los chicos a la medianoche, lo cual podría parecer un poco complicado secuencialmente, pero no lo fue para nada, Mike Flannagan sabe lo que hace, todo se entiende muy bien y uno queda enganchado queriendo saber qué pasa en el próximo capítulo.

La serie termina con algunos huecos argumentales, pero es porque tenía que tener una segunda temporada, lamentablemente Netflix la cancelo... Cuando empecé a ver la serie pensé que solo estaba compuesta por una temporada, que era autoconclusiva, qué decepción ver que su continuación no será adaptada, el consuelo es que Mike Flannagan revelo como hubiera sido la segunda temporada, pueden buscarlo en internet si gustan. Yo solo sé que aunque no me simpatiza mucho Ilonka, quería ver su romance con Kevin, ¿qué les puedo decir?, solo soy una chica. 😁

Si quieren revivir a su adolescente interior (yo soy una adolescente de 26 años 🤣), sentirse detectivescos, disfrutar de una que otra historia de misterio interesante y acompañar a 8 jóvenes a lidiar con su inevitable e injusta muerte, les recomiendo ver El club de medianoche, es entretenida, reflexiva (tiene muy buenos mensajes) y confieso que me termino gustando más de lo que esperaba.

The Midnight Club is a 2022 drama/horror series directed by Mike Flannagan (The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Fall of the House of Usher...) that when it premiered I saw the poster and for some reason decided at the time that it didn't catch my attention, so I didn't watch it. These days it popped up on my Netflix homepage and as I'm catching up with various horror productions, I thought, why not?, so I ended up watching it, I'm happy to say that I liked it, I even felt some sort of affection towards it, it generated me like a strange nostalgia.

This series is based on the book of the same name written by Christopher Pike, a writer of mystery, science fiction and horror novels that focused his works mostly to a young audience, but that won the affection of readers of all ages. I haven't read this book, but I knew of its existence because an older cousin of mine had it along with the popular "Shivers" or "Goosebumps" juvenile horror books.

The series begins with our main protagonist Ilonka, a smart girl who is soon to enter college, but her dreams are crushed because she is diagnosed with cancer and although she receives treatment, she does not get better, her cancer is terminal. Faced with such news, it's difficult not to succumb, but Ilonka is determined, she has hope, so she decides to investigate alternative solutions on her own and in her investigations she ends up finding the case of Julia Jayne, a girl diagnosed with the same type of cancer years ago who was miraculously cured while residing at Brightcliffe Manor, a hospice for terminally ill young people with a somewhat dark past that will lead Ilonka to embark on a series of unsettling and mysterious situations with her peers, who integrate "The Midnight Club", a club that Ilonka inevitably ends up being part of.

The club is a tradition that is maintained by the young people of the hospice over the years, the members are never the same, but the club and its essence is preserved, young people gathered to tell stories of mystery, horror and a little science fiction that are not only united by their sufferings or desire to tell stories, but also pact that whoever is the first to leave, must manifest or give a sign from "the other side", which I found very interesting and is a great hook to tell a story.

I loved the aesthetics of the series, I love the idea of a mysterious house and those who read me know that I love vintage, since the series is set in the 90's everything is very retro, my eyes were happy (vintage house, nature, vibrant colors... amen). As for the characters I'm happy to say that I liked the performances of all the actors, there is a lot of diversity and different backgrounds that show us the different realities of them, I think the nicest thing is to see how even though they are so different, they respect and support each other. Now, not because I liked the performances, it doesn't mean that I liked the characters, at least not all of them, Ilonka's character frustrated me many times, she could be very stubborn and self-absorbed, but how to judge her?, she doesn't want to die (by the way the face of the actress reminded me of a male cousin's face, which was weird plop)... The other characters are fine, sometimes some of them were unnecessarily rude, but again, they are going to die, it's understandable that they have a lot of negative emotions inside them, they are tired.

I think a lot of people when they start watching The Midnight Club expect a creepy series that will scare them, but the reality is that the terror is not that intense because it turns out that the series is really a drama about death or at least that was my conclusion. We encounter very young people who are just starting to really live, having to face the harsh reality that they are soon going to die, their consolation is to share their last days together and tell horror stories that somehow help them deal with everything they are going through, as each story has a part of them, part of who they are, their fears, dreams, hopes and circumstances, I'd be lying if I said I didn't cry a few times.

The Midnight Club takes place between what happens in the present, some fragments of the past and the fictional stories told by the guys at midnight, which might seem a bit complicated sequentially, but it wasn't at all, Mike Flannagan knows what he's doing, everything is very well understood and you're hooked wanting to know what happens in the next chapter.

The series ends with some plot holes, but that's because it was meant to have a second season, unfortunately Netflix cancelled it.... When I started watching the series I thought it was composed of only one season, that it was self-conclusive, what a disappointment to see that its continuation will not be adapted, the consolation is that Mike Flannagan revealed how the second season would have been, you can look it up on the internet if you like. I just know that even though I don't really like Ilonka, I wanted to see her romance with Kevin, what can I tell you?, I'm just a girl. 😁

If you want to bring your inner teenager back to life (I'm a 26 year old teenager 🤣), feel like a detective, enjoy an interesting mystery story and accompany 8 young people to deal with their inevitable and unfair death, I recommend you to watch The Midnight Club, it's entertaining, insightful (it has very good messages) and I confess that I ended up liking it more than I expected.
