Little Shop of Horrors New Remake in the Works
First, this is not the 2020 remake that is now apparently no longer active.
This is a new version with the intent of kicking off a new franchise
If they are planning a cinematic universe, can we just focus on getting the movie out first?
This movie is going by the title “Little Shop of Halloween Horrors”
Joe Dante, film maker known for Gremlins 1 and 2, Small Soldiers, The Burbs and many more, is on board
He is teaming up with Roger Corman, known for writing the original Little Shop of Horrors, acting in Silence of the Lambs, and more
And also with Brad Krevoy, known for producing Beverly Hills Ninja, and many more
The script for Little Shop of Halloween Horrors is being written by Charle S. Haas, he wrote the script for Gremlins 2.
All that is available right now is that this will be a re-imagining of the original movie from the 60’s, which had a Broadway musical based on it, which the 80s Little Shop of Horrors was loosely based on.
Well it was always going to happen since they appear to have run out of idea or good writers. As someone that knows the story of the first one but never saw it, i might enjoy it more than people that were big fans of the original.
Very good point. Often I view remakes as a studio taking another shot at something, if it is good, I enjoy it, if not, I simply ignore it in the timeline (whether the studio does or not). Most of the time there are pieces in the remakes that are still fun or paying homage to the original in neat ways.
I hope they knock it out of the park but having seen the 1986 version, I can't really see how it is going to work in today's climate. It was the 80's is all I can really say about it. Things were different, tastes in movie and entertainment were different. I don't remember any offensive pieces in it, just general vibes so to speak.
Now, if they announce they are remaking Revenge of the Nerds, I can wholeheartedly say, "good luck with that" as that franchise was too much for the 80's. From nonconsensual sex scenes to body shaming to flat out physical bullying, that movie franchise tried promoting several, disgusting, ways of assaulting others (no idea how people "love" that franchise).
This is a bad idea. People have become far too sensitive in modern times for something like that to be a good idea.
As far as remakes are concerned, I would like to see studios not remake blockbuster films but instead remake films that could have been great if they had more money/technology at the time. There are a ton of movies that could have been great in the 80's but the technology just wasn't really there for it to be as realistic as it could be today. "The Last Starfighter" is something I would fully support as a remake, for example.
I am right there with you on remaking movies that failed for whatever reason, money, star power, marketing, whatever.
I read somewhere over the years more than once that the rights to the The Last Starfighter were in legal hell. I figure that is the case with many of the movies of the 80's and 70's - contracts were loose and fast back then.
Look at gaming for instance, a musician apparently put a stop to Capcom using the name Ghosts 'n Goblins when they relaunched the franchise on PlayStation 2. A technicality would not let them use the name so they had to go with another name and launch the game while legal worked out payment with the former employee. This happens a lot and keeps a ton of 80's games from getting remade - I figure the same probably applies to movies from that time.
