New Map Features: Continuing Pinmapple's Legacy

avatar
(Edited)

Pinmapple announced that they are closing down today, which means that new posts will no longer be curated and that their worldmap with all pins will disappear soon. At TravelFeed, we aim to carry forward what Pinmapple has established and ensure that your posts continue to have a home.

To achieve this, we've built on top of Pinmapple's hivesql queries from their open-source backend. This means that just like on Pinmapple, posts from any Hive frontend using the code snippet will be added to the TravelFeed map. We are curating all these posts, just as we do with posts made directly through TravelFeed.com.

We've also rewritten the map to improve performance and mobile usability. The pin picker is similar to Pinmapple, allowing you to obtain the code snippet:

  1. Go to https://travelfeed.com/map
  2. Click the create pin button.
  3. Drag the marker to where your post should be. Zoom in if needed. You can also use the search bar (top right) or your location (left).
  4. Copy and paste the generated code in your post (on any Hive frontend).
  5. OR login with Hive Keychain or Hivesigner and click "create post" to post to Hive directly from TravelFeed (the code snippet is not required then).
  6. Congrats, your post is now on the map!

Unlike on Pinmapple, the marker is moved via drag and drop instead of a click. This is to improve mobile usability. Otherwise, everything works similar, though we have added a cool new 3D Globe Mode:

A team around @detlev is also working to create a new version of Pinmapple, and we are in contact with him to ensure our solutions will remain compatible and travel bloggers on Hive receive the rewards they deserve.

For those using TravelFeed Hosting, you can now have a dynamic map of all your posts on your own domain. See example

Previously, we announced a tool to import your existing Pinmapple posts to TravelFeed. We are also considering bulk importing all previous Pinmapple posts for all users automatically. We would love to hear your opinion on this idea—please share your thoughts with us!

If you have any questions, need assistance or want to get involved in TravelFeed, feel free to reach out in the comments or join our TravelFeed Discord server. We are still looking for new curators to join the team.

It's nice to see that you are working on taking over what has been done by Pinmapple. It would be a pitty if such a project would finish without anything succeeding it...

I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project! Check out our Reading Suggestions posts! Comment Footer.jpg Please consider voting for our Liotes HIVE Witness. Thank you!

Glad to see you building a home for travel posts and built the map as well. I would love to import my existing Pinmapple posts to TravelFeed, and I don't think, anyone would deny leaving them die with Pinmapple.

Travel is a very important and big segment of our blogs / posts, and we should build better tools to attract users from outside.

avatar

Thanks for your opinion. We also think importing all posts makes sense.
Exactly this! We've built a smooth onboarding experience where users can create an account first with email sign up (or Google/Facebook) and already use all features of TravelFeed. Then we tell them about Hive and how to create a Hive account. This has made the onboarding experience much smoother than when we required an account creation right away - for web2 users who are not used to saving private keys this can be a hurdle.

Ya, I agree.

click "create post" to post to Hive directly from TravelFeed (the code snippet is not required then)

Earlier I still used to put Pinmapple's code even though I was writing from TravelFeed, are you saying, now you have done some changes and TravelFeed will automatically include that ?

avatar

Yes, exactly! If you publish through TravelFeed, the code is automatically included for the location you choose through the map picker

avatar

The map picker is not able to find out the exact location, I have seen that.

I'm glad they are continuing the work Pinmaple was doing. I already want to try the TravelFeed map in my next post, and if my internet connection is stable, publish from your frontend. Good for you!

This is Amazing, I can't wait to try this new website and features. If I can be of any help let me know. I'm in the
discord.

Brilliant news, you did comment on last post yesterday where I included a pinmapple snippet, so you made my Friday.
Personally speaking I would have thought everybody would love their posts transferred automatically. Life happens and I am sure some people will be temporarily absent and would love to know that when they have come back that they did not miss the boat to speak in having their posts transferred and visible.
Travel is such a perfect thing for the internet and Hive is no different. Funnily enough my Silver Wedding anniversary is in a couple of weeks. Whilst we are going away later in the year to celebrate it, I made an impromptu midweek mini cruise booking and was thinking no pinmapple that is a shame.
You guys are carryng on the legacy, now I need to check your front end too.
If you ever need a helping hand in some way I am here.
Kudos to you guys for carryng the travel pin map mantle!

avatar

Congratulations on your upcoming silver wedding! Where are you cruising to?
Looking forward to reading your posts!

This is just a mini cruise they call it to Amsterdam from Newcastle. We live near Edinburgh so having a few days in Newcastle and the area so thought ah fluff it let's pop over to Amsterdam. Mrs T is American and so I try to take her to as many new places as possible. She has been here on and off since 1997 so has seen more of Europe than the average American. Hopefully we will be having a Caribbean cruise later in the year.

Hey there. "Wich means that new posts will no longer be curated and that their worldmap with all pins will disappear soon"

-> this is not true. As you know and also mentioned here, @detlev is working on keeping it alive. So no need to spread misinformation and using the moment to advertise your map :) The existing map and all the pins will be saved and also curation will go on soon. ;)

avatar

Hey Liz, you guys have been doing amazing work curating all these years 👏 You are right, we are not the only ones aiming to continue Pinmapple's legacy under a new name. This launch is closely coordinated with Detlev and we're looking forward to working together when the new project is ready.

A team around @detlev is also working to create a new version of Pinmapple, and we are in contact with him to ensure our solutions will remain compatible and travel bloggers on Hive receive the rewards they deserve.

Was hoping this would be clear enough, sorry if you find it's not.

avatar

Congratulations for all this great work :) I loved the 3D map.

avatar

Oh that's great news... I love being on the map 😀
Have a great weekend

Wow! This is a great initiative from the TravelFeed community. I appreciate the great work, we are not gonna loose our personalized tour map. Hope the new version and Travel feed can help the traveler community with the facilities. The last time I tried to post with TravelFeed my post was hanged for 4/5 hours and later I made a mess of trying it to be published and finally failed. I hope the mechanism will be simpler in TravelFeed. Thank you for your great work.

avatar

Hello, I would like to help the team. My language is Spanish, maybe you would be interested if I could help curating content from Spanish speaking bloggers. Anyway, I will gladly help in whatever I can be useful and of interest to the team.

avatar

This is very important information and articles especially to all hive travelers. I would love to try this. Thank you for sharing this wonderful opportunity.☺️🙏

avatar

Yes, exactly - after the announcement we both started working on continuing Pinmapple's legacy and now we are coordianting to work together once worldmappin is live.
Just like there are different frontends where you can see your posts (hive.blog, peakd, ecency,...) there will be multiple frontends that have a world map and if you pin on one, the pin will also show up on the other.

avatar

I am very happy that such a practice continues. I love reading travel and exploration articles. Endless thanks to everyone who contributed to the community.

avatar

I just found the time to read about it!! I will start sharing with you muy travel content! A lot of success for the Travel Feed community!!
