Akito is a fine artist in high school. In the process of entering the Nika Exhibition competition, Akita receives a diagnosis from the doctor that he has a tumour in his heart. This is a rare case indeed. The doctor said that Akita only had one year left to live.

This is where the story of Akita Hayasaka and the beautiful Haruna Sakurai (Natsuki Deguchi) begins.

ORIENTATION

As I explained above, the story begins when fine art artist Akita Hayasaka records a diagnosis of having only one year left to live. Akita felt that his life was meaningless and decided to end his life by jumping off the roof of a hospital building.

Did he succeed? Of course not! As she was preparing to jump, Akita realised that there was someone else on the rooftop. While observing from a distance, Akita finally realised that the person was busy drawing. His suicidal thoughts were instantly distracted, and Akita approached the person.

Haruna Sakurai, was the hospital's longest resident. She had to spend almost her entire life in the hospital due to her chronic illness. Worse than Akita, Haruna Sakurai only had six months left to live.

After Akita saw Sakurai drawing the door of heaven and feeling sincere to leave forever, made Akita think, how much she wanted to be Haruna's friend. Finally, the two decided to become each other's friends.

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Akita Hayasaka (Ren Nagase)

For a high school male lead, Ren Nagase portrays his character well, however, I feel that Ren's gaze in some scenes is not meaningful or supportive of the situation, Ren sometimes still looks confused about how to bring out his expressions.

As for the character as Akita, I like the way she sincerely accompanies Haruna day after day even though she is sick. The way Akita reunites Haruna with her old friend, or the scene when Akita tries to get Haruna out of the hospital and watch her old friend perform at the school festival is very touching. Akita is also not a stubborn person, he is an obedient child and an older brother who loves his younger brother.

  • Haruna Sakurai (Natsuki Deguchi)

Beautiful, lovable, and fun is my first impression of Natsuki in this film. The type of pretty face and mnis that is not boring. I actually paid full attention to Natsuki's acting in Drawing Closer. Playing a girl with a critical condition who never gives up, the way Natsuki explores her character is really good.

Then as Haruna Sakurai, Haruna is a character that is a template found in many films where the main character suffers from prolonged illness. Despite the tough days they go through, however, genuine smiles, kindness, benevolence and motivation spill out from there. Haruna motivated her friend to explore her excellence in nail art, Haruna also motivated Akita to live long and follow Nika's exhibition. Haruna radiated love and warmth in her final days.

INTERPRETATION

Perhaps films like Drawing Closer are often found in Japan or Hollywood, it does remind us of the film Five Feet Apart or The Fault In Our Stars where the two main characters are struggling with a deadly assailant. However, Japan has always had its own charm in the world of cinema. Whether it's the soundtrack, cinematography, or other supporting things, Japan knows how to touch the hearts of the audience.
