CineTV Contest #122: My Three Favorite Movies with Drinking
Drinking alcohol is a habit that couldn’t be left out of movies.
When alcohol is consumed in moderation, even doctors recommend it.
For example, wine is believed to be good for the heart.
On the other hand, the use of alcohol can be prohibited on religious grounds, such as in Islamic faith.
Generally speaking, unless one has the power to control and limit their consumption of alcohol to 1-2 shots/glasses per day, for example, in the context of social drinking or with food, it would be better for them to refrain from drinking any alcohol at all, otherwise the effects on their health, behavior, etc. could be severe and irreversible.
- Dance of the Drunk Mantis
Talking about the health implications of alcohol, it is just unbelievable how Yuen Siu Tin (Sam Seed), the lead actor of the kung fu movie: “Dance of the Drunk Mantis”, can perform his martial arts tricks and acrobatics so easily and effortlessly while drunk!
Perhaps the fact that he plays the drunkard, also being an old man, makes his feats even more impressive and admirable, so that the effectiveness of kung fu as a martial art is further highlighted.
This element makes the whole movie funnier and more entertaining to watch, thus lightening the plot, and diverting from the main theme of most martial arts movies, which is just beating the enemy.
- Cocktail
While “Top Gun” was the movie that literally skyrocketed the reputation of Tom Cruise as a top Hollywood actor, “Cocktail” was another important milestone in his career.
With a plot the heavily revolves around a vibrant bar and drinking culture, and Tom Cruise himself going through all the stages, from starting as a novice and inexperienced barman to mastering flair bartending skills, I think that “Cocktail” deserves a place in an unofficial “hall of fame” of movies that are associated with alcohol drinking in one way or another.
- Raiders of the Lost Ark (Drinking scene)
If you thought that only male actors have played roles or scenes related to drinking, the drinking scene from the “Raiders of the Lost Ark” will probably make you change your mind.
In that scene, Karen Allen (Marion Ravenwood) takes part in a drinking contest in Nepal, and she finally beats her opponent by managing to drink more shots.
In fact, her opponent is carried away in an unconscious state.
