Homemade Star Wars Pinata Smash Cake

Hi Lovelies!

Back in 2017, I made 3D pinata cake with Star Wars theme. It was for our smash cake for New Years Eve celebration. My boys were 7 and 4 that time. My oldest knew that the cake was to be smashed, as it was pinata cake/chocolate smash, for the tier cake. While we were to consume the BB8 cake. He was freaking excited. We hid candies, chocolates, and small Lego characters under the chocolate pinata.

Now...my youngest, didn't understand the concept of WRECKING a nice looking cake. He FREAKED and cried like hell. He was really sad when he saw the brother smashed it and when it was his turn, he didn't wanna do it. He just kept crying regardless surprises under the chocolate pinata.

When my youngest turned 7. He asked me to recreate it. I kept promising him that I would....someday. He would always bring it up, and I would always say, yes, soon.

I never did....no time, no energy. I felt sad for making him disappointed, but with work and life, just didn't have the chance.

Summer break, I wasn't working already as surgery discussions were in the air. He said, hey, there's time, you're home, pleeeeaaassseeee.

So here it is 😊 A silver lining of me schedule for surgery, I guess. A chance to finally recreate it for him 😊

And yep. He smashed it like crazy eventhough I didn't put any surprised under the chocolate pinata, and the size is way smaller than what I made in 2017. At least, he was so happy, I paid my debt 😊😁😊😁

Cake

1 1/4 c strong bakers
3 tbsp cocoa powder
3/4 c sugar
1 tsp BSoda
A pinch of salt

1 c water
1 tbsp vinegar
1/4 c sunflower oil
1 tsp vanilla essence

Fondant

1 bag mini marshmallow
2 tbsp water
1 bag of icing sugar
Vegetable shortening for spatula/wooden spoon

Pinata

1 bag white choc melt
1 bag blue choc melt
Vegetable shortening

Star Wars

1 round ball shape styrofoam
1 box Graham crackers
Edible pen marker
Small presents, Ferrero Rocher or any small goodies

In a bowl, mix flour, cocoa, sugar, soda and salt, then pour in water, oil, vinegar and essence until completely combined.

Grease and flour a half sphere mold, pour batter, and bake on preheated 350 F for 25-30 mins.

Meanwhile, place marshmallow in a large bowl, add in water. Microwave for 2.5 mins total, at 30 secs intervals. Each time, take out, stir, and back to microwave, and repeat steps.

Dump lightly icing sugar on clean flat surface.

Once marshmallow melted, pour on top of icing sugar. Knead until you form a nice pliable dough (you won't use the whole bag of icing sugar, there will be leftover).

Wrap and let rest at room temperature while cake baking and cooling.

Unmold cake as soon as baked, and let cool completely at room temperature.

Next, let's work on the chocolate smash.
Melt white candy melts at 30 secs intervals in microwave, pour into the mold (am using tier cake mold). Make sure center is hollow. For easier, instead pour chocolate, you can brush the melted chocolate onto the mold instead. This is for top tier.

For middle tier, do the same, but with blue candy melts.

For bottom tier, use the white chocolate melt again. If by now the melted chocolate is kinda harden in the bowl, use microwave to remelt it.

You may add vegetable shortening, when needed, for making the melted chocolate smoother.

Let harden chocolate in the fridge.

You can use homemade or store bought buttercream, or Nutella, jam, honey, etc for the cake. You can slice the cake into layers or leave it as is.

As for this one, I brushed the cake with jam/jelly, no layers. Place cake on a cake board that is the same size as the cake.

Roll flat the marshmallow fondant, and cover the cake and the cake board with it. Set aside.

Brush round styrofoam all over, with vegetable shortening.

With leftover marshmallow fondant, reknead, the reroll flat, then cover the styrofoam.

Stack the half sphere cake on top of styrofoam, by pushing through a cake dowel.

Crush honey Graham crackers until fine crumbs. Spread a large cake board. Place styrofoam cake on it. Decorate styrofoam cake as BB8 (Idk why I kept saying R2D2 on the vlog, I'm dumb 🤣) with fondant and edible pen marker.

Place small gifts next to BB8, unmold chocolate tier, and carefully hide the gifts under the chocolate tier. Decorate tier as well.

Tadaaaa!

Done 😊
