In the past, I have claimed to be something of a fan of the horror genre but it's been a while since I saw a horror film. Well, this weekend, I was in the mood for some horror experience and so I went searching for a good film to watch. These days, it's not so easy to find a good movie so I decided to take up a recommendation from a member of our community. I decided to check out the 2023 film "Talk To Me".
"Talk To Me" is a horror/thriller film that was released back in July of 2023. The movie runs for a little over an hour and a half so it's pretty short. With a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 82%, there is a high chance that the film delivers a at least satisfactory experience to the viewer. Well, let's find out, shall we?

The movie opens up at a typical teenagers' house party scene where one of the teenagers is searching for his brother. Shortly after the boy is found, he does some unthinkable acts that cause chaos to erupt and the party to end abruptly.
Next, we meet Mia, a girl who lost her mother and has a shaky relationship with her father. She goes to a gathering with her friends where they are supposed to "play" with a strange severed hand. Mia volunteers to go first with the hand and that is when things get very crazy. She gets possessed and starts to say things as the lights flicker and a door opens and shuts on its own. After the experience, Mia is hooked and she plans another gathering with a smaller crowd. This one, however, will not go as well as the last one.
There is a mishap in the second gathering that gets a member seriously injured. The incident does not deter Mia from using the hand as she discovers that she may be able to connect with her mother with it. Mia also blames herself for the incident and she comes to believe that she can solve her problems with the hand. What she does not know is that she has become corrupted by a spirit and it would bring a great deal of harm to the people around her.
What is this mysterious hand? Will Mia be able to help her friends? Will anyone survive this experience?

This film is one that seems to have come out of nowhere. I did not know anything about it until I saw a post about it on a film page on twitter saying that the film earned $4.1 million on a $4.5 million budget on its film's domestic opening day. From this news, it was clear that the film would be a success despite its relatively low budget. Currently, the film has made about $68 million and I agree with these high numbers because I also liked this movie. It is a film that proves that you don't need hundreds of millions to put out great productions that people will enjoy.
Now, this film isn't the greatest horror story ever but it's quite good. The concept is quite interesting to me. Like many other horror films nowadays, it centers around a group of teenagers who discover something that will eventually ruin their lives. This time around, the teenagers play around with a strange hand coated in ceramic which gets activated when a candle is lit and the person holding it says the words "talk to me". It has that Ouija board vibe where you know that things will obviously go very wrong and they do. It's also relatable because I know that I tried stupid things like this (without a hand, obviously) back when I was a teenager.
I like this movie because of the concept of the hand. It's new to me given that I have not seen any movie with the same concept. Sure there have been films about teenagers doing dumb things that end up having a supernatural effect but this one was still kind of new to me. So, given that it was new, I expected that the entire thing be explained. A severed and embalmed hand is not something that kids just carry around so it makes sense we got some explanation on how these ones got their hands on it. Well, we did get some explanation but it was nothing satisfactory at all. It was just a little description and some vague statements. Some history about the hand would have been really good but we were just left to speculate. Well, I hear that a second movie is in the works so I hope that we get some explanation.

For a low budget film, this movie had some really good visual effects. There are many high budget films with some unimpressive effects and CGI but this one proves that it does not necessarily take so much money to make a movie visually appealing. I like the dark grey and blue visual theme that comes up at night or in hallways giving an expected ominous effect. I also really like the makeup on the eyes and face that make a person look undead when they get possessed by the mysterious spirits.
Despite all the impressive visual effects though, I wouldn't say that this movie had that amount of scare that you'd expect in a good horror film. There are shocking and gruesome scenes but altogether they don't deliver the best horror experience. Nonetheless, I found the story to be quite entertaining mainly because of how intense it got. I especially like how the story comes to an end playing on the mind with the common fear of the uncertainty of what comes after death. This part of the story is really chilling when you imagine yourself in the situation.
Speaking of death, the protagonist of the film was motivated by grief and this makes her a little relatable but not so much. This is because the character was not really developed as she should have been instead she was almost like a random pick. It gets worse for other side characters. Well, I should not really complain given that the film is not very long and its budget was low. Considering those standards, I guess the characters were ok. A lot of the credit should go to the actors of the movie with their very convincing performance that delivered a good experience in a short runtime.

To be honest, I don't know if I would recommend this film to everyone. Yes it's a horror film but it's not so scary and the story is really nothing groundbreaking. It may be cliche to a lot of people but oddly enough it still entertains.
So, this is a movie that I would not outrightly recommend. I saw it and enjoyed it despite the flaws. No film is perfect after all.
