Sometime back in 2019, on a slow and quiet evening, I was going through the movies on my laptop looking for something to watch while I ate dinner alone in my room. I had seen almost all the movies on my laptop and I was down to the ones that I thought would not be interesting to watch. With virtually nothing else to watch, I decided to check out "Klaus", an animated film that did not look apealing at first but had gotten into my laptop somehow. Prior to this evening, I had not heard anything about this film and I had no idea that it was even a Christmas film. I was about 20 minutes into the film when I realized that "Klaus" was supposed to be the name given to Santa Claus and so I was quite impressed and became a lot more interested.
I liked the film back then and I never really forgot about it. Sure there are many things that happened in the movie which I could not recall but overall the movie left me with an unforgettable experience. Because of the Christmas contest, I decided to see this film once again and I was quite excited about it. Now, I want to tell you all about it.

Jesper Johanseen is the spoilt son of the Postmaster General and he wastes every opportunity that his father offers him just so that he can maintain his enviable level of comfort. To set his son straight, the Postmaster General makes a drastic decision. He sends him to the hostile town of Smeerensburg to set up a post office within a year or else he would be cut off from the family fortune. Because of the strange tradition of the people of Smeerensburg, the task would prove to be a really difficult one.
With everything on the line, Jesper is determined to set up a post office and reach his father's goal of 6,000 letters in a year. After failing multiple times, he changes tactics and decides to check out a cabin in the woods. There he meets a large man called Klaus and things begin to turn around for him not long after.
Jesper and Klaus begin to deliver toys to kids who request for them in their letters. The whole thing begins to change Jesper's motive for delivering the letters. Also, the operation becomes huge and it changes the town of Smeerensburg for the better. However, not everyone is willing to let go of their traditions no matter how hostile it is and they will try their best to sabotage the things Jesper and Klaus are doing.
Will Jesper reach his goal and leave the town or will he find fulfilment in bringing joy to young children? Will the antagonists succeed in their sabotage?

You know that a film is good when you watch it a second time and you still love it. Klaus is just that type of film because despite the fact that it has been four years since I first saw it, it was still really good the second time. The first time I saw this film, I did not expect it to be so good. This was because the initial look was not very appealing to me. To be honest, I don't like the animation style so much. It is a bit dull for my taste. Still, the film turned out to be a good one because what Klaus lacked in animation, it made up for in other aspects. This movie proves that all the annoyingly shiny animations we get a lot these days do not guarantee that a film will do well and that a film with a dull look may just turn out be a great watch.
So what are the other aspects that Klaus makes up with? Well, let's just start by saying that the movie presents quite a creative story. I have watched a good number of Christmas movies and most of them are always very cliche but this movie presented a new type story to me. There are movies out there that focus on Santa Claus but I have not seen anyone like this. This film is really about the origin of the myths of Santa Claus but in a universe where most of the myths are true. There is actually a man that delivers toys to kids but not quite as we were told as kids.
Klaus is a strange large man who lives alone at a cabin in the woods where he spends his day by making bird houses. Klaus is clearly a very talented craftsman and so it is no surprise that he has some toys in his house which he made himself. Of course, this grown man did not make the toys for himself but for the children that he had hoped to have. Sadly, this man never gets the chance to have children of his own because of a tragedy which I will not mention. Having endured so much pain, Klaus gives up making toys and just lives life in solitude. However, he finds a new purpose when he encounters the postman. If he does not have his own children that he can give his toys to, he can donate them to the other children of Smeerensburg as long as they request for it. And so, our strange large man begins the noble deed of putting smiles on the faces of little children and the rest as they say is history.

Speaking of story, Santa Claus is a magical and ridiculous character that children believe in and so there are some aspects of the myth that had to be incorporated into the story. Firstly, having a skinny postman that goes down the chimneys was smart. Klaus makes the toys while Jesper goes down the chimneys to deliver them as stealthily as possible because, well, seeing a strange man in your house is not going to be a magical experience. It explains why nobody has ever seen Santa Claus (but somehow we all know what he looks like) and how he can fit through chimneys despite his ginormous waist size. Something that I really loved about the story is how they were able to come up with the naughty list. It starts with a scene that seems to be unimportant and forgettable but that goes on to serve as the foundation for why bad children receive coal instead of presents. The elves were also not forgotten. Other things, like the flying reindeer, the famous laughter of Santa and his ability to reach the entire world in just one night, had to be conveniently added but I guess it's fine. You just can't always explain the magic of Christmas.
This movie, like many other modern Christmas stories, is a comedy. To be honest, it's not the best comedy I've seen in a Christmas story but it does quite well. The comedy was not something that I focused on a lot rather I was interested in other elements of the story. Santa's tragic past is one of those elements. Another would be the values that Christmas reminds us of. The Smeerensburg town that was formerly chaotic and divided began to rebuild itself and might I note that it started with the good behavior of kids at home. Despite how exaggerated it is in the film, it is evidential that a society begins to fix itself from the family. Kids, being kids, want nice things and when they know they can only get them by being good, they'll definitely be good. That is one way of teaching kids to be good before teaching them to be good just for the sake of it. Definitely, when these kids grow up, their values will spill into the rest of society. In reality it takes time but basically the best way to fix a decadent society is to protect the nuclear family. The big lesson from the movie reminds us that Christmas should be about love, family and community.
One final thing I loved about this film is how much Jesper changed. The Self-centered postman initially wanted to reach his goal just so he can get back to the comfortable life he was used to. On this quest, he discovered that there were things more important than riches and he ended up having a much more fulfilled life.
