Entrapment (1999)
My day started off really bad, and to ease stress, I had to comb the net for something old, action-packed, and thrilling. I got lots of recommendations, but the blurb of this one stood out, so I decided to watch it. Every time I watch a crime film, I'm always rooting for the criminal, and I think that's because the government, who think they have our interest at heart, are nothing but criminals too. So if someone is up to the task of stealing something huge from the government without getting caught, they earn my respect.
Synopsis (no spoilers)
Entrapment is a 1999 American action film directed by Jon Amiel and starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The film follows the story of two art thieves, Mac and Gin, who are both after a priceless artifact called the Mask.
Mac is charming, while Gin is a beautiful and skilled insurance agent who is actually a thief herself. They meet in a seductive and flirtatious encounter in a London nightclub. This, of course, wasn't a coincidence as it was duly crafted by Gin, who had been trailing Mac.
Gin was actually sent by her employer to seduce Mac and steal the Mask, but things get complicated when they start to fall for each other. Mac, on the other hand, is being pursued by a rival thief, Hector Cruz, who wants the Mask for himself.
Mac and Gin, after successfully stealing the Mask, embark on another heist that puts their lives on the line. They need to use high intelligence to navigate their way around and escape the cold hands of the law.
My Review and Rating
This film, as earlier mentioned, features plenty of action-packed sequences that had me gripping the covers, seeking an escape route for my favorite characters. One memorable scene is where Mac and Gin try to escape from a high-security facility. They had to use their wits and acrobatic skills, which I admired a lot.
There are also mind-blowing twists and turns that left me in awe of the script. Throughout the film, Mac and Gin engage in a cat-and-mouse game, constantly trying to outwit and outmaneuver each other. Thieves obviously never trust themselves. However, as they grow closer, they question their true loyalties and motivations as they have to work together to pull off one final heist.
Will they succeed, or will their complicated relationship and competing interests tear them apart? Find out in this thrilling film with compelling characters and humor that will have you grinning from ear to ear.
Overall, I'd say Entrapment is a fun, very stylish film with plenty of wit, charm, and subtle romance. At this juncture, it's okay to infer that Sean Connery (Mac) and Catherine Zeta-Jones (Gin) have great chemistry on screen. Their banter and flirtation add to the film's humor and charm. If you enjoy action comedies with a romantic twist, you'll likely enjoy this one. I rate it a 4.5/5.
