The Fall of The House of Usher (My Halloween Ritual)
For the past few years, it has been my ritual to watch some horror or psychological thrillers every Halloween. Well, I had to work this year, but I did watch a few episodes of a horror series I have been waiting and wanting to watch.
This series has been available on Netflix for a week or so already, but I decided to watch it on Halloween night and I did.
The series I'm talking about is called The Fall of the House of Usher. It's based on a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe. The mini-series is directed by Michael Fimognari and my favorite horror director, Mike Flanagan.

To be honest, I have really high expectations especially because it's Mike Flanagan. Although, the previous series The Midnight Club wasn't as impactful as The Haunting series, I really kept my hopes up for this.
And boy!!!! He didn't disappoint! I LOVE IT!!!

The story is obviously about the Usher family. The head of the house Roderick Usher and his sister Madeline Usher made huge fortune through Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. However, they weren't good money as their company has been scrutinized due to health concerns.
They were under trial when the series began and in the midst of the trial, Roderick's children mysteriously started dying one by one. Well, it wasn't really a mystery for him since he knows the cause pretty well.

Flashbacks were shown as Roderick reiterates every detail to Attorney Dupin, the district lawyer who started the case against him, and also played a key role in his past.

Here's the series trailer. The trailer doesn't say much about the story, which is actually good. So if you're curious, go and watch it!

Apart from the very interesting story, I am also very happy to find a lot of familiar faces. It makes me more excited to watch the series because I know how amazing these artists are. By watching most of Mike Flanagan's films in the past, I became a fan of Kate Siegel, Samantha Sloyan and Carla Gugino. These three artists are so good at portraying any role given to them.
In addition, seeing those artists from The Haunting series and The Midnight Club work together was quite refreshing. It's like combining several generations of talented artists together.
In addition, I also enjoyed the other Edgar Allan Poe references that they included in the series like Annabel Lee and the Raven. I also read that the story about the Usher's lawyer was actually a separate work by Edgar Allan Poe. I want to read it, too... and better, if they also make a movie about it.
I'm looking forward to watching more of Mike Flanagan's films or other creations... and hopefully, still with these people. <3
If you're a fan of horror, psychological thriller... or just in need of some adrenaline and excitement, I recommend you watch this. It's worth it. I'd definitely watch it again! <3
Thanks for reading. See you next time!
I like Mike Flanagan and many of his productions, but this and the previous one, The Midnight Club, disappointed me a bit. Most people liked this miniseries inspired by Poe's short stories, but I failed to connect. I'm hoping Flanagan's next one will impact me as it has in the past.
Well, we do have our preferences. I enjoyed this one because it was quite poetic... and I love writing poetry myself, so maybe that's one of the factors. Though I must say, The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass are still my faves when it comes to his mini-series. I was a bit disappointed with The Midnight Club, too... maybe I just expected too much. haha
