Maboroshi, a confusing film about adolescence and first feelings of love. —eng/esp

Buenos días, tardes o noches, damas y caballeros. Estamos reunidos acá en este post para hablar de una película que descubrí debido a que el tráiler me apareció en una publicación de Facebook aunque lo que más me llamó la atención sin dudas fue la gente que estaba a cargo de la película, solo con leer los nombres y el estudio encargado pensé en que tenía que verla sí o sí sin importar el qué, lo bueno fue que el filme lo iban a sacar mundialmente en Netflix, por lo que no fue un gran problema el disfrutar de una obra de este calibre porque es sin dudas una gran producción, siendo así una de las primeras películas originales de parte de MAPPA, ya sabemos cómo es la animación de ese estudio en cuestión, muy buena cuando se lo proponen o deficiente cuando están en contrarreloj explotando a los empleados, lo bueno es que acá tenemos una animación preciosa (cosa que se notaba en el tráiler influyendo en mi decisión por verla) y no lo segundo. Como mencioné antes, de los nombres que me llamaron la atención estaba Mari Okada siendo la escritora de la historia y directora de la película, haciendo así que prácticamente la película sea una obra 100% de ella, por si no la conocen es la creadora de grandes obras como AnoHana y Toradora!, obras que cuando las vi me gustaron mucho, por ende esto tenía que verlo también porque técnicamente soy fan de esta señora. Así que sin más dilación, hablemos de la primera obra original de MAPPA en conjunto con Mari Okada, Maboroshi.

Good morning, afternoon, or evening, ladies and gentlemen. We are gathered here in this post to talk about a movie that I discovered because the trailer appeared in a Facebook post, although what caught my attention the most was undoubtedly the people in charge of the movie. Just by reading their names and the studio involved, I thought I had to see it no matter what. The good thing was that the film was going to be released worldwide on Netflix, so enjoying a production of this caliber was not a big problem. It is undoubtedly a great production, being one of the first original movies from MAPPA. We all know how the animation from that studio is, very good when they set their minds to it, or lacking when they are under pressure and exploiting the employees. The good thing is that here we have beautiful animation (something that was evident in the trailer and influenced my decision to watch it) and not the latter. As I mentioned before, among the names that caught my attention was Mari Okada, being the writer of the story and director of the movie, making it practically a 100% work of hers. In case you don't know her, she is the creator of great works like AnoHana and Toradora! Works that I really liked when I saw them, so I had to see this one too because technically I am a fan of this woman. So, without further ado, let's talk about the first original work from MAPPA in collaboration with Mari Okada, Maboroshi.

La película nos ubica en el pequeño pueblo de Mifuse, donde un día sin razón aparente explota la fábrica que mantiene en pie al pueblo económicamente, esto provocando un extraño fenómeno en el proceso, haciendo que el tiempo quede totalmente paralizado, siempre será invierno en Mifuse y los habitantes del pueblo nunca envejecerán, para mantener todo en control también deberán de controlar sus emociones debido que el más mínimo cambio puede alterar el lugar donde se encuentran. Para terminar están encerrados, no pueden huir de ese sitio, Mifuse es el único lugar donde pueden pasar su tiempo, viviendo una vida sin cambios y frustrando a los más jóvenes, siendo considerado todo esto como un castigo divino. En este escenario nuestro protagonista será Masamune, un chico bastante joven de 14 años que todavía va al colegio con sus amigos, con el aburrimiento de siempre tener la misma vida, se aventura a hacer cada vez cosas más peligrosas junto a sus amigos debido a que no parecen sentir dolor, hasta que se encuentra con Mutsumi, una chica de la cual se enamorará, cambiando por siempre el rumbo del pueblo, desencadenando un montón de sucesos, aunque ellos no serán los únicos, los amigos tanto de Masamune como de Mutsumi también comenzarán a sentir emociones como el amor y los celos. Maboroshi es una historia que nos trata de explicar la adolescencia y los sentimientos que se tienen cuando la gente se enamora por primera vez.

The film takes place in the small town of Mifuse, where one day for no apparent reason the factory that economically supports the town explodes, causing a strange phenomenon in the process, freezing time completely. It will always be winter in Mifuse and the town's inhabitants will never age. To maintain control, they must also control their emotions, as the slightest change can alter their surroundings. They are trapped and cannot escape from this place - Mifuse is the only place where they can spend their time, living a life without changes, frustrating the younger ones, and being considered a divine punishment. In this scenario, our protagonist is Masamune, a young boy of 14 who still goes to school with his friends. With the boredom of always having the same life, he ventures to do increasingly dangerous things with his friends, as they seem to feel no pain. Until he meets Mutsumi, a girl he falls in love with, forever changing the course of the town and triggering a series of events. But they won't be the only ones - Masamune's and Mutsumi's friends will also start to feel emotions like love and jealousy. Maboroshi is a story that tries to explain adolescence and the feelings one has when falling in love for the first time.

Solo imagínate tener la misma edad conforme pasa el tiempo, estar embarazada y nunca tener a tu bebé, todos los días ser algo monótono, casi sin sentido, cualquiera pensaría que vivir en un entorno así no tiene sentido, vivir no vale la pena, tampoco puedes salir de ese lugar por ende cumplir tus sueños es algo que está fuera de tus amigos, siendo casi que imposible, todo eso es a lo que se enfrentan nuestros personajes, una constante frustración que los hacen buscar consuelo en aventuras arriesgadas, no es hasta que conocen a una extraña chica que parece ir en contra de las normas del pueblo, ella sí envejece y parece estar relacionada con el fenómeno que atormenta a Mifuse, de cierta forma esta chica parece darle esperanza a todos los habitantes del lugar, provocando que todos les dé por vivir de la forma que quieran, aunque esto signifique acabar con el pueblo. De alguna manera que esto suceda, aunque esto sea malo, ayuda a que Masamune y los demás sean capaces de apreciar sus vidas, comienzan a después de mucho tiempo a sentir emociones y hasta dolor, Mifuse que parecía un lugar congelado durante los años comienza revivir de cierta forma, inclusive logrando cambiar la estación de invierno a verano. Los chicos comenzarán a apreciar en el proceso, sus vidas experimentando con sus emociones, incluso se darán cuenta de pequeños detalles que hacen sentir que de cierta manera el tiempo sí siguió avanzando, valorando incluso la idea de seguir viviendo en Mifuse, ese lugar del que tanto querían huir.

Just imagine having the same age as time goes by, being pregnant and never having your baby, every day being monotonous, almost meaningless, anyone would think that living in such an environment is pointless, that living is not worth it, you can't even leave that place so fulfilling your dreams is something outside of your reach, almost impossible, that's what our characters face, a constant frustration that makes them seek comfort in risky adventures, it's not until they meet a strange girl who seems to go against the norms of the town, she does age and seems to be related to the phenomenon that torments Mifuse, in a way this girl seems to give hope to all the inhabitants of the place, causing them all to have a desire to live in the way they want, even if it means ending the town. Somehow, even if this is bad, it helps Masamune and the others to appreciate their lives, they begin to feel emotions and even pain after a long time, Mifuse, which seemed frozen over the years, starts to come back to life in a way, even managing to change the season from winter to summer. The boys will start to appreciate, in the process, their lives by experiencing their emotions, they will even realize small details that make them feel that, in a way, time did continue to advance, valuing even the idea of continuing to live in Mifuse, the place they wanted to escape from so much.

He de admitir que la película es muy pesada y densa en la forma en cómo narra la historia, se nos van presentando muchos elementos de golpe y si no estamos atentos no sabremos cómo procesarlos, durante mi visionado de la misma estuve haciéndome muchísimas preguntas hasta que llegaba el momento en el que se me explicaba mi duda pero si no estás al tanto es fácil perderse y aún más con el tema de los nombres, algunos de ellos son bastante parecidos y puede llegar a pasar que no sepas quién es quién o a quién se están refiriendo. ¿Esto implica que la película sea mala? Diría que no, de por sí la duración total es de casi dos horas, si decides ver esta película es porque debes de dedicarle su debido tiempo y es lo que recomiendo, dado que también así podremos detallar detenidamente todos los aspectos que la obra tiene para ofrecernos, entre ellos la animación que trata de imitar el realismo y lo consigue a la perfección, con hermosos paisajes y escenarios, el diseño de personajes es bastante simple pero funciona a la perfección, cada personaje es reconocible y de cierta forma entrañable. Lo único que no le encontré sentido es que ciertas críticas comparan esta obra con Your Name cuando no tiene nada que ver ni son en lo mínimo similares, acá el foco no está centrado únicamente en el amor, también tenemos muchísimos más temas que hacen que la película sea interesante, tú cuando ves Maboroshi no sientes que estás viendo una película de romance sinó una película que trata de transmitirle cierto mensaje al espectador que a algunos les llegará más o menos, dependiendo de su estado de ánimo.

I have to admit that the movie is very heavy and dense in the way it tells the story, many elements are presented to us all at once and if we are not attentive we will not know how to process them, during my viewing of the movie I was asking myself many questions until the moment when my doubt was explained to me, but if you are not aware it is easy to get lost, especially with the names, some of them are quite similar and it may happen that you do not know who is who or who they are referring to. Does this imply that the movie is bad? I would say no, the total duration is almost two hours, if you decide to watch this movie it is because you must dedicate it the proper time and that is what I recommend, as it also allows us to thoroughly analyze all the aspects that the work has to offer, including the animation that tries to imitate realism and achieves it perfectly, with beautiful landscapes and settings, the character design is quite simple but it works perfectly, each character is recognizable and in a certain way endearing. The only thing that I didn't find sense in is that some critics compare this work with Your Name when they are not related at all and are not even remotely similar, here the focus is not solely on love, we also have many more themes that make the movie interesting, when you watch Maboroshi, do you not feel like you are watching a romance movie but a movie that tries to convey a certain message to the viewer which some will resonate more or less with, depending on their mood.
