I think I have fallen to my lowest point, writing this a few minutes before Christmas just because of the remorse of not having written this week, but what can you do, that's life, sometimes you are not convinced by the films you see and you feel it's not worth reviewing them and when you find one you like, you don't find the courage to write about it either, the hard and difficult life of a writer. Now leaving aside all the sad digressions, let's get to the point, if you are reading this post is because we are obviously going to talk about a film, a film that I discovered in my arduous search on the internet, although maybe not so arduous, I just had to get on TikTok and let my algorithm guide me in the viewing of something good, I had to be convinced by the little they told me about the film to be able to see it and that is how Foxcatcher definitely did it, what better than a film based on real events, right? And even more so of a case of which you don't know anything about and which may surprise you due to your lack of culture (as is my case, I don't hide, not at all), then if the film seemed interesting you could investigate how things happened in reality (the truth is that I read some articles and I was left with many doubts by the representations of the facts in the film). So without further ado, without further introductions, let's talk about Foxcatcher once and for all.

Creo que he caído en mi punto más bajo, escribiendo esto unos minutos antes de que sea Navidad solo por el remordimiento de no haber escrito esta semana, pero qué se le puede hacer, así es la vida, a veces no te convencen las películas que ves y sientes que no vale la pena hacerles reseñas y cuando encuentras alguna que te gusta, tampoco encuentras los ánimos para escribir sobre ella, la dura y difícil vida del escritor. Ahora dejando un poco de lado todas tristes divagaciones, vamos a lo que vamos, si están leyendo este post es porque evidentemente vamos a hablar de una película, película que descubrí en mi ardua búsqueda por internet, aunque tal vez no tan ardua, solo tuve que meterme en TikTok y dejar que mi algoritmo me guiara en el visionado de algo bueno, en sí tenía que convencerme lo poco que contaran sobre la película para poder verla y así es como Foxcatcher lo hizo definitivamente, qué mejor que una película basada en hechos reales, ¿no? Y más aún de un caso del cual desconoces todo al respecto y puede llegar a sorprenderte debido a tu falta de cultura (como es mi caso, yo no me escondo, en lo absoluto), después si la película te parecía interesante podrías investigar sobre cómo ocurrieron las cosas en la realidad (la verdad es que leí algunos artículos y quedé con muchas dudas por las representaciones de los hechos en la película). Así que sin más dilación, sin más presentaciones, hablemos de una vez por todas de Foxcatcher.

The film tells us a story based on true events where our protagonist will be Mark Schultz, a former Olympic wrestling champion who is not going through a good economic moment, besides being in a condition almost that of loneliness, being totally the inverse representation of his brother David Schultz, who is quite popular and even has a family to take care of, although this does not mean that the two get along badly, not at all, rather David on several occasions serves as a father figure of Mark and even understands him very well as both are former Olympic champions. Mark will see an interesting opportunity to change his life and to get out of his brother's shadow when the egomaniacal millionaire John du Pont (who sooner or later will also be like a father figure to Mark but in a more manipulative way) comes into his life, who will offer him to lead the Foxcatcher project by training a few individuals with the aim of winning the Seoul Olympics, although du Pont will also act as Mark's fake coach, although all this is really just a whim of John du Pont in order to impress his mother, who doesn't like Olympic wrestling at all. Everything will explode when David joins the Foxcatcher project where there will be tensions, arguments and jealousy that will end in disaster.

La película nos cuenta una historia basada en hechos reales donde nuestro protagonista será Mark Schultz, ex campeón de lucha olímpica que no está pasando por buen momento económico, además de estar en una condición casi que de soledad, siendo totalmente la representación inversa de su hermano David Schultz, quien es bastante popular y hasta tiene una familia la cual cuidar, aunque esto no quiere decir que los dos se lleven mal, en lo absoluto, más bien David en diversas ocasiones ejerce como figura paterna de Mark e incluso lo comprende muy bien ya que ambos son ex campeones olímpicos. Mark verá una interesante oportunidad para cambiar su vida y de salir de la sombra de su hermano al llegar a su vida el millonario ególatra John du Pont (quien tarde o temprano también será como una figura paterna de Mark pero de forma más manipulativa), quién le ofrecerá liderar el proyecto Foxcatcher entrenando a unos cuantos individuos con el objetivo de ganar los juegos olímpicos de Seúl, aunque du Pont también ejercerá de falso entrenador de Mark, aunque realmente más que nada todo esto es un capricho de John du Pont con el fin de impresionar a su madre, quien no le gusta para nada la lucha olímpica. Todo explotará cuando David se sume al proyecto Foxcatcher donde habrá tensiones, discusiones y celos que terminarán en desastre.

During the film we are going to meet three very complex personalities, one of them being Mark, someone totally submissive and manipulable who only wants to be loved, looking for something to fill the void left by not having had parents as a child, he is not evil by any means, he is someone humble who also looks after his brother, being John du Pont who manipulates him, offers him what he needed so much: money and recognition, little by little, based on manipulation techniques, he manages to make himself look like a father to Mark, and this is clearly reflected in that typical phrase: I am proud of you. Thanks to all this, John du Pont manages to separate Mark from his brother, causing him to create a kind of resentment towards David, which later leads to an almost homoerotic relationship between Mr. du Pont and Mark. John du Pont is not a stable person at all and although he says that his project is for the benefit of the United States, he only seeks to satisfy his own desires like a small child, he has the frustration of wanting to convince his mother and little by little he loses his temper and ends up going mad when he fails to achieve his goal when his mother dies before her time. Finally we have David, who could be considered as the most normal person and the victim of the whole affair, he only wanted the best for his family and for Mark, we see throughout the film how he cares for him and how he is the only one able to give him directions during the fights, technically he acted as Mark's father as they both have no parents, his only bad decision was to want to improve his living conditions by accepting John du Pont's offer.

Durante el filme nos vamos a encontrar con tres personalidades muy complejas, siendo una de ellas Mark, alguien totalmente sumiso y manipulable que solo quiere ser querido, buscando algo que llene aquel vacío que le dejó el no haber tenido padres de niño, no destila maldad por ningún lado, es alguien humilde que también vela por su hermano siendo John du Pont quien le manipula, le ofrece aquello que él tanto necesitaba: el dinero y la obtención de reconocimiento, poco a poco en base a técnicas de manipulación consigue hacerse ver como un padre para Mark, viéndose claramente reflejado este asunto en esa típica frase: estoy orgulloso de ti, gracias a todo esto John du Pont consigue separar a Mark de su hermano haciendo que cree una especie de rencor hacia David, causando que después haya casi que una relación homoerótica entre el señor du Pont y Mark. John du Pont no es una persona para nada estable y aunque diga que su proyecto es para el beneficio de los Estados Unidos, solo busca satisfacer sus propios deseos tal cual niño pequeño, tiene la frustración de querer convencer a su madre y poco a poco va perdiendo los estribos para culminar volviéndose loco cuando no consigue lograr su objetivo al morir su madre antes de tiempo. Por último tenemos a David que podríamos considerar como la persona más normal y la víctima de todo el asunto, solo quería lo mejor para su familia y para Mark, vemos durante todo el film cómo se preocupa por él y cómo es el único capaz de transmitirle indicaciones durante las peleas, técnicamente ejerció como padre de Mark al ambos no tener padres, su única mala decisión fue querer mejorar su condición de vida aceptando la oferta de John du Pont.

What is noteworthy is undoubtedly how they manage to convey these depictions of different types of parenting, each of them feeling quite realistic, just watch John du Pont's actor act, you can immediately feel a disdain for the character and seeing how he acts you know he is not doing something good and is not on the right track. The weird thing is that looking on the internet for information about the case, it is surprisingly different from the film, we could even say that the "reality" sounds more crazy than the fiction, like the fact that John du Pont was going crazy making him see ghosts, that he always carried guns with him, that he heard voices telling him that he was going to be killed, even in some articles I read there is no mention of Mark Schultz, it seems that in reality he is not very well known either, I just have to assume that he had a hand in telling this different point of view than the one you see on the internet. What the film manages to do very well is to leave you with the question of why John du Pont does what he does in the end, what is his motive, the reason for his behaviour and in the end it is something, a fact that is transposed to reality and which will never be answered, they simply attributed insanity to John du Pont because of his strong paranoia due to cocaine use. I simply believe that du Pont knew what he was doing and fired a treacherous shot, making him a coward from my perspective, but whatever, a great film that narrates a real event in a majestic way.

Lo que hay que destacar sin lugar a dudas cómo logran transmitir esas representaciones de diferentes tipos de paternidad, cada una de ellas sintiéndose bastante realista, solo hay que ver actuar al actor de John du Pont, en seguida podrás llegar a sentir un desprecio por el personaje y viendo por como actúa sabes que no está haciendo algo bueno ni está bien encaminado. Lo raro es que buscando en internet información acerca del caso, es sorprendente diferente a la película hasta podríamos decir que la "realidad" suena más disparatada que la ficción como el hecho de John du Pont volviendose loco haciendo que viese fantasmas, que siempre cargara pistolas consigo, que escuchase voces que le dijeran de matar gente y otros actos de esa índole, hasta en ciertos artículos que leí ni se le llega a hacer mención a Mark Schultz, parece que en la realidad tampoco es muy reconocido, solo he de suponer que él tuvo que ver para contar este punto de vista diferente del que se ve en internet. Lo que logra muy bien la película es dejarte con esa pregunta de por qué John du Pont hace lo que hace al final, cuál es su motivo, la razón de su comportamiento y es que al final es algo, un hecho que se traslada a la realidad y del cual nunca se tendrá respuesta alguna, simplemente le atribuyeron locura a John du Pont debido a su paranoia fuerte por consumo de cocaína. Yo simplemente creo que du Pont sabía lo que hacía y disparó a traición, convirtiéndose desde mi perspectiva en un cobarde pero en fin, una gran película que narra de forma majestuosa un hecho real.
