Good morning, afternoon or evening, ladies and gentlemen. I'm kind of not very active around here right now but you know, lots of holidays around and most people think about relaxing and I'm evidently one of those people. Today I was technically reminded of a series that Netflix made a few years ago and caused a stir, the one about that blonde homosexual killer (that even some girls consider handsome, I don't know where), many people were horrified because a fashion was created from him, in a kind of praise that was reflected in holidays like Halloween, where you could see people dressed up as him, nothing worse than that, just think of the families of the victims, seeing the representation of the killer of your family member everywhere, it must not feel very nice to say. For me in particular, what attracted me to watch the series is that it features the magnificent Evan Peters in the lead role, one of my favourite actors since I saw the first season of American Horror Story, well known in the acting world for knowing how to play murderers and people who are not right in the head, without his participation I don't think I would have even thought about watching the series. So now that we're here, having seen a few episodes of the series, let's talk a little about Dahmer, one of Netflix's most famous works in recent years.

Ahora como que no estoy muy activo por acá pero ya saben, muchas festividades cerca y la mayoría de las personas piensan es en descansar y yo evidentemente soy una de esas personas. Hoy técnicamente me recordé de una serie que hizo Netflix hace unos años y causó revuelo, la que trataba de aquel asesino rubio homosexual (que inclusive algunas chicas consideran guapo, no sé en dónde), mucha gente quedó horrorizada porque se creó una moda a partir de él, en una especie de alabanza que se veía reflejada en fechas festivas como en Halloween, donde se podían ver personas disfrazadas de él, nada peor que eso, solo hay que pensar en las familias de las víctimas, viendo la representación del asesino de tu familiar por todos lados, no debe de sentirse muy bonito que digamos. A mí en lo particular más que nada, lo que me atrajo para ver la serie es que sale el magnífico Evan Peters en el protagónico, uno de mis actores favoritos desde que vi la primera temporada de American Horror Story, muy conocido dentro del mundo actoral por saber interpretar asesinos y gente que no está bien de la cabeza, sin la participación de él creo que ni me hubiera pensado en ver la serie. Así que una vez ya estando acá, habiendo visto algunos capítulos de la serie, hablemos un poco sobre Dahmer, una de las obras más famosas de Netflix de los últimos años.

The series takes us through the different stages of Jeffrey Dahmer's life, starting with how he was caught and then as the episodes go on we see how he got to the place we saw at the beginning (which is the moment where he is caught after failing to kill what would have been his 17th victim), all of this told in a non-linear way by intermingling dates of the various events. We can see throughout the series how certain things that Dahmer was taught may have influenced his behaviour when he grew up, such as family problems at an early age or his passion for handling dead animals (taxidermy) that was technically taught by his father, we can also see the supposed disorders he had, where he could even hallucinate to the point of near madness, imagining conversations with people who are not there, perhaps caused by loneliness, as in a way he was abandoned for a while. Although the series does not stop there, it also tries to give visibility to the victims and their families, with key people such as Dahmer's neighbour, who for a long time warned the police but was ignored, perhaps because of the racial problems of the time. The series tries to convey the horror that Dahmer caused in society and how he was also revered by some, but did he do it in a good way? That is the question at issue.

La serie nos pone en las diferentes etapas de la vida de Jeffrey Dahmer, comenzando por cómo fue atrapado y luego con el pasar de los episodios vemos cómo llegó al lugar que vimos al principio (que es el momento donde lo atrapan al fallar en matar a la que hubiese sido su víctima número 17), todo esto contado de una forma no lineal entremezclando fechas de los diversos acontecimientos. Podremos observar durante el transcurso de toda la serie el cómo ciertas cosas que se le enseñaron a Dahmer pudieron haber influenciado en su comportamiento ya de grande, como lo podría ser los problemas familiares a temprana edad o su pasión por manipular animales muertos (taxidermia) que fue técnicamente enseñada por su padre, también podemos ver los supuestos transtornos que tenía, donde podía llegar hasta a alucinar llegando a un punto casi de locura, imaginando conversaciones con gente que no está en ese lugar, quizás causado por la soledad, ya que de cierta forma fue abandonado durante un tiempo. Aunque la serie no se queda solo ahí, también se intenta de ver visibilidad a las víctimas y a los familiares de éstas, teniendo gente muy clave como la vecina de Dahmer, que durante mucho tiempo estuvo advirtiendo a la policía pero a esta le hicieron caso omiso, quizás teniendo algo que ver los problemas raciales de la época. La serie intenta transmitir el horror que Dahmer causó en la sociedad y cómo también fue venerado por algunos, ¿lo hizo de buena manera? Es la pregunta en cuestión.

During the course of the series we are told about different cases of different victims, their stories are depicted and they are not just treated as a number, it is made clear that they were people with ambitions and goals in life, lives that were taken away from them in an unjust way leaving a pain for those closest to them that is very difficult to heal. And there was practically not much that could be done, technically there is no apparent reason for Jeff Dahmer to have done what he did, even he himself admitted that he knew what he was doing was wrong but that he couldn't stop once he had started, committing some of the most vile and atrocious acts that a serial killer has ever committed, although there are several that are somewhat similar in the way they kill and which are mentioned in the series, because they happened close to the years of Dahmer's incidents, I even think that in a way they compare them. I think the only point I don't agree with in the film is where they try to give Dahmer a kind of redemption through religion, I see it as a vain attempt to make the viewer feel sorry for what he did or for the sentence they gave him, which he doesn't deserve at all seeing the arrogant attitude he still had when he was incarcerated. Also, don't forget that it fails to raise awareness, bringing back the fashion of people dressing up as a murderer as happened when he was in prison, which is wrong and is mentioned but caused the opposite effect.

Durante el transcurso de la serie se nos va contando diversos casos de diferentes víctimas, se ve la representación de sus historias y no se les trata nada más como un número, se deja en claro que eran personas con ambiciones y con objetivos en la vida, vida que se les fue arrebatada de manera injusta dejando un dolor para los más cercanos que es muy difícil de sanar. Y es que prácticamente no se podía hacer mucho, técnicamente no hay una razón aparente para que Jeff Dahmer haya hecho lo que hizo, hasta el mismo admitió que sabía que lo que hacía estaba mal pero que no podía parar una vez ya empezado, cometiendo así actos de los más viles y atroces que un asesino en serie jamás ha cometido, aunque hay varios que su forma de matar es algo parecida los cuales son mencionados en la serie, debido a que ocurrieron cercanos a los años de los incidentes de Dahmer, hasta creo que de cierta forma los comparan. Creo que el único punto que no comparto de la película es donde intentan darle una especie de redención a Dahmer a través de la religión, lo veo como un intento en vano de el espectador sienta pena por lo que hizo o por la condena que le dieron, cosa que no se merece en absoluto viendo la actitud prepotente que aún tenía estando encarcelado. Además no hay que olvidar que falla en crear conciencia, volviendo a traer la moda de que la gente se disfrace de un asesino como ocurrió cuando él estaba preso, es algo que está mal y se menciona pero causó el efecto contrario.

The only thing that is not clear to me is if the series is a 100% representation of the facts or they invented parts to make it more exaggerated for the training environment, some things are so shocking that it is very difficult to believe that it is something totally true, because if it is all real we could assume and say without a doubt that Dahmer was completely crazy, for example one of the most striking things that are told is that he preserved his brain to experiment with it in search of an answer, it sounds unimaginable a fact like that. One thing I didn't know about this whole story is that it was all related to the racial issues of the time, I didn't know that most of the victims were black and that people who came to denounce being black were totally ignored, being later rewarded the policemen who allowed this (if what you see in the series is real). I can say that technically you can learn something from all this but I think it is better to watch a documentary to know the story more reliably, which is something I plan to do after watching this. The creation of this series only brought morbidity around this killer and brought the whole world's attention back to this time, bringing terror back to those affected.

Lo único que no me queda claro es si la serie es una representación de los hechos al 100% o se inventaron partes para hacerla más exagerada para el medio del entrenamiento, es que algunas cosas son tan choqueantes que es muy díficil de creer que sea algo totalmente cierto, porque en dado caso de ser todo real podríamos asumir y decir sin lugar a dudas que Dahmer estaba completamente loco, por ejemplo una de las cosas más llamativas que se llegan a contar es que según se preservó el cerebro para experimentar con él en búsqueda de alguna respuesta, suena inimaginable un hecho así. Una cosa que desconocía acerca de toda esta historia es que estaba relacionado todo con los temas raciales de la época, desconocía en su totalidad que la mayoría de las víctimas eran de piel negra y que gente que llegó a denunciar al ser de este color de piel fueron ignoradas totalmente, siendo luego premiados los policías que permitieron eso (si es que lo que se ve en la serie es real). Puedo decir que técnicamente se puede llegar a aprender algo de todo esto pero creo es mejor ver un documental para conocer la historia de forma más fidedigna, que es algo que pienso hacer después de haber visto esto. La creación de esta serie solo trajo morbo alrededor de este asesino y volvió a atraer la atención de esta vez el mundo entero, volviendo a transmitir el terror a los afectados.
