This Movie is based on a true story and as with most movies some things have been chaged & didn't happen quite the way it's told. You can read the true Michael Oher story here.

"The Story of Michael Oher, a homeless & traumatized boy who became an All-American football player and first-round NFL draft pick with the help of a caring woman and her family." Source.

This movie isn’t just about football, it’s about family. A family isn’t always about blood but much more about the people in the family and what brings them together.

This movie represents everything about underprivileged families & shows how some are fortunate enough to escape & rise above the stereotype that young kids from the ghetto will never mount to much.
Michael Oher is a young but big boy who is looked over & passed on year after year & place after place. He’s accepted into upper scale Christian school as a deal with a man who wats a better education for his own son. Michael is sleeping on his couch, but he is using Michael as an advantage for his son. When his son thinks his father is giving to much time to Michael, he gets jealous and convinces his father to stop spending time with Michael because the boy feels that it’s taking his father’s time from him. Michael is then left to fend for himself.

One night, Michael is approached as he’s walking down the street with nowhere to go. When asked he say's "he's going to the gym" (Michael Oher- in the movie). It’s cold and raining when Mrs. Touhy realizes the gym is closed for the holidays, she goes back and in mid conversation realizes that he has nowhere to stay, she takes him home with her family. Although she thinks it’s for just one night, it turns into more & he becomes part of the family. Mr. Touhy & the children also take a liking to Big Mike, and they all do everything they can to make him feel like he’s just as important as anyone else.

Family Dynamics

I’ve seen many situations similar to this. Children are left behind in many ways. This story depicts a child who has great potential but is looked over simply because his mother is a drug addict, and he doesn't get the loving care a child needs at home. They live in the projects (which is low-income housing communities) & there’s a lot of drugs & crime in the area & schools are not as well as schools in an upper-class area.

There are many people in the world that live together as a family and are not blood related yet live as a family. The thing that makes this family special is that they don’t see color. Michael Oher is a colored boy & the family that takes him in is white. Also, this family is very wealthy but that doesn’t make them look at Michael any differently.

Overall, everything that happens in this movie is true reality. It may not happen every day that a wealthy family takes in someone less fortunate, but it happens. The story behind this movie is more likely to happen with mid-income people, and these people in most cases were once in the same predicament.
