The mustached plumber at this point is an image that goes face to face with the round-eared mouse, there is no doubt that since he was called Jumpman, Mario has become an icon of pop culture, whether you play video games or not, you know the plumber, and that until this point someone so recognized in the video game industry has not had a movie that does him justice is a true anomaly.

Yes, we have that live-action movie from 1993, a very curious experiment that apparently kept Nintendo away from trying to make a movie of its flagship character again for almost 30 years, I say almost, because even though The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released in 2023, the idea came long before.

When it was known that Illumination would be the studio in charge of bringing Mario back to the big screen, the reactions were mixed, some people did not trust the Illumination's ability to properly portray the plumber, myself included. The same thing happened when Mario's design leaked, curiously through a McDonald's advertisement, and history repeated itself, skepticism was felt in the air.

On top of all this, the fact that Chris Pratt was chosen as the voice of Mario was definitely a strange move, as we all had in mind the beloved Charles Martinet, who has been the plumber's voice since he had vocal cords, in Super Mario 64. Finally, the movie reached the specialized critics and the worst fears of some were confirmed, the reception was atrocious, currently we can see that the movie "enjoys" a 46 on Metacritic, or a 59 on Rotten Tomatoes, but as Jack Black said... "Luckily the world doesn't listen to Rotten Tomatoes".

The reception from the public was overwhelming, The Super Mario Bros. Movie became a worldwide phenomenon and the third highest-grossing animated film in history, making its way into a ranking monopolized by Disney, where a film hadn't grossed over a million dollars since 2019.

Personally, Illumination has proved me wrong, and although this film came out last year, I decided to talk about it now because it seems to me like a love letter to years and years of Super Mario games, and it could only have been better if Rosalina had appeared.

In this movie, Mario has some quite curious origins, he starts the movie as just another plumber from Brooklyn, together with his brother Luigi they fix leak problems for anyone who might need it, but the business is not easy, the work is scarce and now that they have set up their own business it's like starting from scratch, they must build a reputation, and flooding the bathroom of one of their first clients is definitely not the best starting point.

Mario starts the movie dejected, disappointed about being nobody and not being able to please his family, especially his father who doesn't show a single gesture of support towards his son. For reasons explained in the movie, what started as a plumbing job ended with Mario and Luigi being sucked into a mysterious green pipe that took them to another world, the Mushroom Kingdom, the one we know well thanks to countless Super Mario games.

If you have already played any Mario, there is not much to tell here, Bowser is the villain who wants to get the power of the Super Star to conquer Princess Peach and marry her. The biggest difference is that Mario and the princess do not know each other at all, we will see the beginning of their relationship and how it evolves throughout the movie, as well as Mario's friendship with Toad, whom he meets as soon as he arrives in the Mushroom Kingdom.

This movie is enjoyed more, much more if you are a fan of the franchise, as it is full of all kinds of references to different installments, with the most notable being Mario Kart, and obviously Mario's historical enemy, Donkey Kong, with whom he was already facing before Bowser even existed, but who in this movie is more of a rivalry scenario.

The interpretations of the characters are quite solid, with Peach and Bowser undoubtedly shining, at least in my opinion. Speaking of the original voices, Chris Pratt as Mario doesn't convince me at all, I prefer to listen to the character in other languages, while the rest of the characters hold up pretty well, and Jack Black as Bowser is probably the best portrayal in the movie, not to mention his musical theme that makes his intentions with the princess very clear.

Princess Peach has been a controversial point because her role has changed considerably. She has gone from being useless, unable to do anything on her own in 90% of the games, to a princess who must protect a kingdom besieged by Bowser. She is a warrior who is even more agile than Mario, but requires his help to stop the comically large turtle.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is not an auteur film, it does not have Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino behind it, but it also does not aim for that type of cinema. It's a movie for all audiences, fun, so much so that it feels short. Watching the credits roll leaves me wanting more, and without a doubt, it leaves us alert for any other cinematic production involving Nintendo in the future.

El fontanero del bigote a estas alturas es una imagen que mira de tú a tú a la del ratón de orejas redondas, no hay duda alguna que desde que se llamaba Jumpman, Mario se ha convertido en un icono de la cultura pop, juegues o no a videojuegos, conoces al fontanero, y que hasta este punto alguien tan reconocido en la industria del videojuego no haya tenido una película que le haga justicia es una verdadera anomalía.

Sí, tenemos esa película live-action del año 1993, un experimento de lo más curioso que aparentemente mantuvo a Nintendo alejado de volver a intentar hacer una película de su personaje insignia en casi 30 años, digo casi, porque a pesar de que The Super Mario Bros. Movie se estrenó en 2023, la idea venía desde mucho antes.

Cuando se conoció que Illumination sería el estudio a la tarea de traer de vuelta a Mario a la pantalla grande las reacciones fueron variopintas, algunas personas no confiaron en la capacidad del estudio de los Minions para trasladar correctamente al fontanero, me incluyo. Lo mismo ocurrió cuando se filtró el diseño de Mario, curiosamente a través de una publicidad de McDonalds, y se repitió la historia, el escepticismo se sintió en el ambiente.

Encima de todo esto, el que Chris Pratt fuese la voz de Mario definitivamente fue un movimiento extraño, pues todos teníamos en mente al querido Charles Martinet, quien ha sido la voz del fontanero desde que tiene cuerdas vocales, en Super Mario 64. Finalmente la película llegó a la crítica especializada y se confirmaron los peores temores de algunos, la recepción fue atroz, actualmente podemos revisar que la película “goza” de un 46 en Metacritic, o un 59 en Rotten Tomatoes, pero como dijo Jack Black… “Por suerte el mundo no escucha a Rotten Tomatoes”.

Personalmente, Illumination me ha cerrado la boca, y aunque esta película salió el año pasado, me animé a hablar de ella ahora porque me parece una carta de amor a años y años de juegos de Super Mario, y solo podría haber sido mejor si hubiese aparecido Rosalina.

En esta película Mario tiene unos orígenes bastante curiosos, empieza la película como un fontanero más de Brooklyn, junto a su hermano Luigi arreglan los problemas de fugas de todo aquel que pueda necesitarlo, pero el negocio no es sencillo, el trabajo no abunda y ahora que han montado su propio negocio es como empezar desde cero, deben labrarse una reputación, e inundar el baño de uno de sus primeros clientes definitivamente no es el mejor punto de partida.

Mario empieza la película abatido, decepcionado por no ser nadie y por no lograr complacer a su familia, especialmente a su padre quien no demuestra un solo gesto de apoyo hacia su hijo. Por motivos explicados en la película, lo que empezó como un trabajo de fontanería terminó con Mario y Luigi siendo succionados por una misteriosa tubería verde que los llevó a otro mundo, al reino Champiñón, a ese que conocemos bien gracias a incontables entregas de Super Mario.

Si ya jugaste a algún Mario no hay demasiado que contar acá, Bowser es el villano que desea hacerse con el poder de la Super Estrella para conquistar a la princesa Peach y casarse con ella. La mayor diferencia es que Mario y la princesa no se conocen de nada, veremos el inicio de su relación y cómo evoluciona a lo largo de la película, al igual que la amistad de Mario con Toad, a quien conoce apenas llegar al reino Champiñón.

Esta película se disfruta más, mucho más si eres un fan de la franquicia, pues está llena de todo tipo de guiños a diferentes entregas, siendo lo más notorio Mario Kart, y evidentemente el enemigo histórico de Mario, Donkey Kong, con quien ya se enfrentaba antes de que Bowser siquiera existiera, pero que en esta película es más un escenario de rivalidad.

Las interpretaciones de los personajes son bastante sólidas, siendo quienes brillan sin duda alguna Peach y Bowser, al menos en mi opinión. Hablando de las voces originales, Chris Pratt como Mario no termina de convencerme en lo absoluto, prefiero escuchar al personaje en otros idiomas, mientras que el resto de personajes se mantienen bastante bien, y Jack Black como Bowser es probablemente la mejor interpretación de la película, sin olvidarnos de su tema musical que nos deja bien claras sus intenciones con la princesa.

La princesa Peach ha sido un punto controversial pues ha cambiado considerablemente su rol, ha pasado de ser una inútil que en el 90% de los juegos es incapaz de hacer algo por sí misma, a una princesa que debe proteger un reino asediado por Bowser, una guerrera que es incluso más ágil que Mario, pero que requiere de su ayuda para poder pararle los pies a la tortuga cómicamente grande.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie no es una película de autor, no tiene detrás a Martin Scorsese o Quentin Tarantino, pero tampoco apunta a ese tipo de cine, es una película para todo público, divertida, tanto que se hace corta, ver los créditos correr me deja con ganas de más, y sin duda alguna nos deja alertas con cualquier otra producción cinematográfica que involucre a Nintendo en el futuro.
