Rustin

Hey there! So, I just caught "Rustin" on Netflix, and let me tell you, it's one heck of a ride! This movie dives deep into the Civil Rights Movement, but with a twist—it shines a spotlight on Bayard Rustin, the unsung hero behind the scenes.

Colman Domingo absolutely shines as Rustin. He brings this energy to the role that's just infectious. You can't help but root for him as he navigates through the complexities of organizing the 1963 March on Washington. And let me tell you, the soundtrack? It's like a time machine to the '60s, with jazz, Motown, blues, you name it!

What I really appreciated about "Rustin" is how it doesn't shy away from Rustin's personal life. Being openly gay in the '60s was no walk in the park, but Rustin faces it head-on with courage and determination. It's a powerful reminder of the struggles he faced both in and out of the movement.

The movie isn't just about Rustin, though. It gives a nod to all the other incredible figures of the time, like Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, and James Baldwin. It's like a crash course in Civil Rights history, but with heart and soul.

Overall, "Rustin" is a must-watch. It's got great performances, a killer soundtrack, and it shines a light on a piece of history that deserves more recognition.

Bayard Rustin was involved in several key civil rights movements throughout his life
Civil Rights Movement in the United States
Desegregation Movements
Labor Movement
Peace Movements

On August 8, 2013, President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Rustin the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States. The citation in the press release stated
Bayard Rustin was an unyielding activist for civil rights, dignity, and equality for all. An advisor to the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., he promoted nonviolent resistance, participated in one of the first Freedom Rides, organized the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and fought tirelessly for marginalized communities at home and abroad. As an openly gay African American, Mr. Rustin stood at the intersection of several of the fights for equal rights.
