Parish (2024) : Kumba - Season 1 - Episode 5 - RECAP

I don't want to compare Parish with Shogun (2024) although both series are of very little action but with a lot of drama, I'm still doubtful that there will be a second season for Parish as things seem to be evolving very fast, I mean what else is to the story besides Parish figuring out who killed his son and the war between Anton and Sheperd to be over I really there is more to that on this story and I don't see this last two fighting for power over years like they run two powerful gangs, even Tokyo Vice that was a Yakuza story only last two season.

Going back to the drama side of the story on Episode Five we find out the Tongai brothers are just other than pawns to their father been Sheperd the first victim of this dilemma, when his father prefer money and power over his own blood I think this will start a civil war on the Tongai family, Sheperd has been order to go back home which I doubt he will, worst part is that he use to run the Tongai operation so he knows every single angle he can attack from unless he is just too loyal to his father who just betray him and goes against Anton but in my opinion its very likely that he is going for everything, the family business and Anton's head.

What strikes me is that Anton has not yet called on Parish head, I mean in any other gangster series the first thing Anton would have done is call the guys at Parish house and tell them to take care of business, kill Parhis wife and daughter, at least he would know that they are on the run, details men, I hate when this small details slip.

There are a lot of ghost at the Parish house and after everything went down, even Ros killed one of Anton's guy she decide to act stupid and call 911, Parish is against the wall because he fucked up by getting his family on this shit hole so Ros is calling the shots but she back down, realize she has no clue whats going on so let Parish take the lead.

I have mention before that this story has a few unique type of crime that is human trafficking, something very delicate that we don't see TV series touch on very often, in my opinion probably even worst than drug trafficking, they turn people into merch that they sell at the price they want and most of the time abuse them directly like we are about to see on the next episodes as how things are going down, Anton reminds Sheperd of this as he keeps calling "his people" like he is some savior, at least Anton knows the piece of shit he is.

For Sheperd surprise, Anton has direct line with Sheperd's father who runs the family and had him step down putting Zenzo in charge, this was a crazy move that I never saw coming, this are the type of details that makes the drama within the story interesting, all the mind games that are been played within the Tongai family but after this Sheperd is braking that circle, he most likely going rouge.

At Parish place, Colin comes in to help him clean up while Mak and Ros pack things up to get out of that place and go to another state, Parish made clear to Sheperd he wants nothing to do with them, no money, no favors, no debts no nothing and same goes for them.

I think telling Sheperd that Anton send Parish to kill him was a mistake from him, not that he would not or could not find out they had business in the past but now Sheperd will use Parish to kill Anton, before they left the house that Parish set on fire to cover up the crime scene after all his wife and daughter killed two guys; Sheperd's bodyguard called Chipo left him an envelop that had a voice recording of the man who killed Parish son, so obviously once he heard it he flips out.

THE IMPIMPI!!! Zenzo was the impimpi, the snitch, he told his father what was going on and his father gave green light to Anton probably giving him intel on Sheperd or it was in fact Zenzo who put the tracker on Parish car so that make sense now how he found the tracker, Parish himself told him what if it was you? Shamiso doesn't like it but she is part of the family and the business needs to continue running so she plays alone but not before telling Zenzo the deep shit he is in and that almost got Luke killed.

It seems Anton has deep connections within the government, white collar guy, currently in business with the future New Orleans Governor who they just present but I bet she knows about Anton operation if not part of it.

On episode five they show a bit of how the Tongai runs their operation, bring in people from Africa and trick them thinking they going to a place called Kumba, this people who come in are aware they coming to work, that they are not tourist but are mislead by the Tongai family thinking they will stay on a nice village with at least good accommodations and receive $400 to settle in but in fact they are put inside a building that is saturated in people, some sick, no privacy, only give them $150 and took their passport for "safe keeping", I dont find this hard to believe, some are naive to follow along until they find the reality, others are put on this places against their will, that is just the reality that still happens in some corners of the world.

There is a new rule at the Parish family, no secrets, well let tell you this is a very dangerous game to play, with pure transparency there are few things in life that can turn into chaos and family is one of them. They start shining some light into the Parish family problems, Gray starts by telling his daughter Mak about his past who is not so dark, all he did was drive and steal cars so what?? well he probably transport really bad shit but who knows, second on the list the relationship between Ros and their dead son Maddison was not the best to the point that he prefer the streets and his friends than been at home, Parish also had a rough relationship with Maddison and only Mak notice this but to make things worst they conclude that Mak was stealing cars same as his dad did when he was young after Parish heard the tape that Sheperd send him and Ros took out a gun she found on Maddison room cleaning up after he died, WTF was going on at that house with that kid and none of his parents knew anything about it.

As you can tell from my post the topic at hand is family, not even the war between Sheperd and Anton, this episode was truly about family and their secrets, on both sides at the Tongai and Parish family they really did not know their parents and children like Sheperd never expect his father to sell him out or how Ros and Gray had no clue what was going on with Maddison growing up until it was too late and now he is dead, moving forward is when I expect the war to resume and Parish will be turn in to Sheperd's pawn to figure out who killed his son, I guess most likely the guy on the tape was calling Anton, I doubt it was Collin because Parish would recognize his voice but what a twist that would be, its getting really interesting and I'm starting to enjoy this series a bit more, a good Sunday watch.
