"Godzilla x Kong: "The New Empire", directed by Adam Wingard, is widely recognized as the fifth installation of the Monsterverse. The movie continues its predecessors’ tradition by displaying excellent giant monster fights and a new storyline and character interactions that make it unique apart from others as well. The content in this movie is a direct sequel to a 2021’s film named ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’, and the movie invariably expands on the existing original story while introducing some new components that enhance Monsterverse mythology side of it..

The central storyline of this movie is about the uneasy relationship between Godzilla and Kong, who have to join powers to fight back an old thread that is now out after many thousands of years when Godzilla lock him down on the underground of Hollow earth, an obscure Community of colossal Kong like gorillas was lead by their chief called the Skar King a story that not only involves Godzilla and Kong but also humans who Kong have been allies with for thousands of years.

Adam Wingard comes back to take the director's chair and he combines action with a lot of adventure, does feel like discovering a new world with just a bit of humor that frankly sometimes felt a little cring specially from the characters of Bernie and Trapper. The movie is does include a solid record of actors, such as Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Dan Stevens among others , who do not just play the roles but also add the feeling side of things like empathy and depth to their characters, but again during certain scenes same as with the humor added the acting felt a bit over the top although mix with the action and adventure is not a turn down for the movie, the movie was still able to present the monster fights that every was waiting for.

The New Empire Plot Overview

The Return of Familiar Faces

The story picks up where it left off with some characters of the last movie still playing an essential part in events such as Dr. Ilene Andrews played by Rebecca Hall and her adopted daughter called Jia played by Kaylee Hottle; Ilene is an anthropologist and has been elevated to the position of Head of Kong Research at Monarch, the secretive organization that monitors Titan activity, her primary responsibility is overseeing Kong and ensuring his doing ok at the Hollow Earth. Meanwhile, Jia who is deaf communicates with Kong by using Sign Language, she is probably the most significant in their relationship with Kong, this union is the basis of the plot and at the same time what keep the movie from been just constant monster fights.

New Threats from the Hollow Earth

At the beginning, it is stated that the crew of Monarchs starts to receive strange energy waves so they start to investigate and hunt down this distress signal, in their journey they stumble upon a source of beats which are indeed signals of distress sent by a hidden civilization of gigantic apes. The Scar King, the fearful tyrant rules over the monkeys through slavery like in a closed society or subterranean nest, weird why they choose to stay there when some of them do go to the surface, seems like his ambition is to overthrow the world from underground, the Skar King does put up a ruthless and scary personality with total intention different than others like Godzilla that can do a lot of harm but it looks more of a natural behavior.

Kong's Journey

Kong's path to success in the movie begins both on the physical and mental levels, despite been apes that do not communicate with words he does show his feelings during the movie, he initially concentrates on defending his hollow ground residence, but later on he finds himself in the middle of a deeper mission. After going into an uncharted territory on Hollow Earth he locates a young ape called Suko who initially was used as a bait to trap Kong, Suko was part of a pack of apes under Scar King command, but after taking Suko with him the relationship between them shifts when he becomes his friend not before Kong had to teach him but still clearly expressing who is boss, which delivered the topics of apprenticeship and development, reason why even without using words to communicate if you pay attention to some scenes you could identify how they communicate with each other, small details that prevent viewers from drowning into a constant monster fight.

Godzilla's Role

Even though the movie is set on Kong, Godzilla remains a formidable force this time more active than in any other movie, been around the world. The relationship between the two still been very volatile, sometimes they are fighting each other, but at other times they are working together but this time because Mothra intervene; lets keep clear that as long as their an egg left behind some where this kaiyu will never die, at the end they do join forces to fight against the skull king and his people. Godzilla's acquire new skills which now include a new kind of red radiation combined with his his character make him even more terrifying.

Human Characters and Their Roles

Ilene Andrews and Jia

Ilene and Jia have a tight relationship which in some way becomes one of the main basis of the sentimental drama during the movie, Jia does not feel like she belongs to the place they live at, not the school, not the people, nothing. Ilene is totally committed to make Jia feel at home but at the same time she does have a very busy agenda taking care of Kong, Jia in the meantime is having all kind of hallucinations, visions and mood swings, that on a way signal her the path to the unknown civilization at Hollow Earth.

Bernie Hayes

The character of Brian Tyree Henry, whose name is Bernie Hayes, comes back and helps Ilene and Jia as they fall into their exploration with him to unraveling the phenomenon both of how Hollow Earth works, learn from the civilization Jia is from how they master gravity. Bernie Hayes for the most part puts up the comedy and a little skepticism, and this is to balance between the serious tones presented by the movie, Bernie even though not totally present as a serious character does bring a few bright insights and problem solving ideas through the story.

Trapper

Trapper, the main human character, I fall into this conclusion because how he is the one who actually keeps Kong moving forward, Trapper is a veterinarians of Kaiju with a lot of personality; to be honest from time to time felt over the top too, is played by Dan Stevens. Firstly he introduce himself by successfully removing an abscessed tooth from Kong, which look very cool an interesting how they use resin to make a new tooth for Kong setting up the expectations that Kong is going to get a lot of tech and surely he did. Trapper is very passionate about his work who would not been a Kaiju specialist, even some level of fanaticism for Kong, also he is willing to do what ever it takes to make sure Kong wins his battle, he goes to the length of bring in the fight to the Scar King as he takes his ship and persuade other monster birds who look like bats to attack Scar King.

Visual Elements & Theme

The Hollow Earth

The mythical Hollow Earth itself is visually impressive scenery populated by unusual monsters, felt in a way like Skull Island but larger and more vast. The movie uses completely the surrounding landscape, going from land to water, an resulting into great battles with even gravity changes, gravity is inevitable, and the zero gravity Kaiju battles are something probably not seen before, this demonstrate how create this movie is aside from the rest of the Monsterverse productions from TV to the Big Screen.

Monster Battles

The things that the majority of people are interested in are the monster battles and probably why the movie had a positive feedback from the majority of the audience online, the movie offers a great set of effect that fans usually love specially with Godzilla, but also does Kong's kung fu fight with a sea monster, Godzilla many suplex moves is something that I'm sure none of the audience will forget. Kong vs Scar King showdown is an experience that will stick seen so many monsters battle out at the same time.

Themes of Friendship and Survival

Friends and survival are the main themes of the movie which once again, the relations among the main characters, not only humans but also monsters, are an essential part from a literary point of view. The bonds of Kong and the Suko's character, and Jia's connectivity to both Kong and Mothra suggest the message of trust of the group and cooperation as Kong and Godzilla join forces, even towards the end with other Kaijus.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is a interesting addition to the Monsterverse series, offering a lot of action, adventure, and emotions from both Kong and the Human Characters. In my opinion it succeeds in delivering the monster battles that the audience expected but true fans might find this battles just too easy and in fact too much battle for what usually is Godzilla specially. The exploration of the Hollow Earth and its hidden civilization adds a new layer to the Monsterverse mythology, setting the stage for future installments where Hollow Earth will be a regular place to visit as Skul Island. The characters, both old and new, bring a sense of continuity and growth to the story, Ilene and Jia's relationship provides an emotional drama situation, while Bernie and Trapper add humor. I get how this movie might be appealing for the most part of the audience although I don't feel it was the best one of all, my problem with this iteration of the Monsterverse is how short were the battles, probably this could be the new trend on the Monsterverse, more monsters, more fights because it is true that this version brings in the most monsters ever on a single movie but for anyone who has been following the Monterverse we are more use to slower fights and larger time stamp between fights, reason why I only give it a 6.5/10 but after all I was OK with it and manage to watch the movie without any actual regrets but I don't think this is a movie I would look into watching more than once.

Finally my good buddy shared a blog on the Giants... But let me ask, in a fair fight without and extra powers who would win, Kong or Zilla?
