The Death of Hollywood

Yeah maybe it's a little harsh, but I think this is it...

We're heading towards a very different way of making watchable entertainment. Between Ai and the way the next generation is consuming content, it's pretty clear things are changing.

On one hand we have Ai generated video capabilities that are growing really fast, and on the other the screens we consume all this stuff on fit in our pockets. I know people still watch movies and shows or even youtube on big screen TVs, we do that, but there is a growing number o people who really only look at their phones.

Will the next generation not even care for movie theatre? The last time I went to the movies we had the whole room to ourselves!

Film Making is Expensive

So as some of you already know, I've worked in the film industry for roughly 30 years as a grip. We build sets, assist with camera movements, lighting and we do a lot of the heavy work needed to make movies and TV shows what they are.

I could tell you how we build the rig needed to make the camera movements do what it does for Spiderman's point of view as he swings from building to building in Manhattan, but it would take us off topic for this post.

There is a lot involved in making movies and shows, and there are more or less 500 employees on each large Hollywood project! Yeah these things are huge. I'm no even going to go into how much of a corporate thing it became, with all the policies, meetings and talks we have to endure at the beginning of every job... It didn't used to be like that. We were the grunt of the film industry, the blue collar workers of Hollywood that no one bothered!

Anyway, let's get back to this Death of Hollywood thing.

Since Ai made it's debut on the world stage, I have been loving it, and keeping an eye on it. I use it for so many different things I do, I use it as a tool, the way you would use a calculator to help you with math. I have created insanely intricate art that would take me ages to create without it, I've used it to help me write posts from time to time (not this one) and now I use it to help make estimates or bids for various handyman/construction jobs.

I have been involved and I keep on learning how to use ai to my benefit. That being said, I can see how the world of Movie Making is going to be effected in a big way. It won't be an overnight change, not much ever changes that fast, but it will give a producer the ability to create a film with far less employees than today.

Imagine you're producing something which takes about 8 months to build with 400 employees, and you're given the opportunity to make the exact same thing for fragment of the cost because you can produce it with 40 people in about 2 months time. Wouldn't you chose the faster and cheaper option? I mean in the same amount of time it takes to make a movie in the traditional way you would have the time to produce 4 movies!

Sure sure we're still pretty far away from actually having enough computer power to make full length movies entirely generated with artificial intelligence, but things are moving fast and I give it somewhere between 5 and 10 years.

Here's my break down of how this will happen:

Eventually there will be no more need for a film set, then we won't need actors and at that point the camera will be rendered useless. When that goes down, all the people in the blue collar side of film making will need to find something else to do. And really the same goes for a lot of the white collar side too... ai is coming for them too.

When that happens you will probably have several crucial positions in place to create the movie, each with a small team of prompt engineers:

  • A producer (the head honcho). That's the guy behind the money
  • A writer, because you still need someone who knows story telling to produce a script
  • A director to orchestrate the script in their own style
  • An art designer to get execute the wishes of the director's vision
  • A director of photography to tell the prompt engineers which camera angle he wants and how the lighting should be
  • An editor
  • A marketing engineer

That's pretty much it.... Imagine these people working in an office space with a team of prompt engineers to manage per department, working a regular 9 to 5 job. Yeah it's way different that how it is today! We're talking about 50 to 100 people instead of 400 to 500! That makes thing much cheaper too, and if you can reduce the time it will take on top of that, it's huge!!!

So that's my take on how this will go down... but what if it just disappears all together?

With the way everyone is consuming videos today, it could only keep going in that same trend. We watch movies on a TV yes, but a lot of times we're just watching silly shorts and how-to or instructional videos to learn something. The entertainment we consume in general is also changing.

One thing is the size of the screens enables us to have more mistakes that go unnoticed, as ai video generation is growing it still makes lots of weird things, but on a small screen you most likely won't notice. And then there's a question of getting used to seeing that type of content, with mistakes and all the weirdness...

Between the type of content we watch being drastically different then 20 years ago, the size of the screens and ai generated videos, traditional movie making may soon be a thing of the past.

Only time will tell...

The world is moving too fast and the most amazing thing is how AI became a disruptive phenomenon in all areas.

I believe that everything will change and will herald a new era. Change is imminent. Humans must adapt and acquire knowledge in all areas.

Yes yes well said. And we are a species that is pretty good at adapting!

40 people in 2 months instead of the usual 400 in 8 months? Wow! That’s some serious progress.

avatar

Yeah and that's my point, when producers are able to cut down time and labor costs... they won't hesitate.

You make a good point, but if AI cinema were to become a reality I think it would be just another genre, there will always be the nostalgic ones who will want to see Tom Cruise jumping around doing his stunt shots. !PIZZA 🍕

Well yeah there will always be old school enthusiasts but anyone making a movie like we do today may be film students.
