CineTV Contest: Why I Loved "We're All Going To The Worlds Fair"

Image

This is my first entry to the CineTV Contest which this time has the subject of the Favorite Movie No One Likes

When I think of movies that nobody likes which I personally loved, I immediately think of the massive gap needed in the IMDB score and my personal score. While usually it's the other way around where I don't understand what people love a movie that I didn't like, there is one that instantly came to my mind where it did very much apply to me.

The movie in question is "We're All Going To The Worlds Fair" which was the 3rd favorite movie I watched in 2023 (Link) after Talk To Me & Aftersun.

I personally scored it a solid 7.9/10 while on imdb it is only getting a 5.4/10 so a huge gap as most people really dislike this movie and I can see why as 30 minutes into it I also kind of felt like putting it off. However I'm glad that I kept watching it as it really connected with me by the end. This to the point that years after I still remember most of it vividly.

So it's a movie from 2021 and the debute of director Jane Schoenbrun. The movie is classified as a horror movie which it isn't really in my opinion and to start I can see many horror fans coming into this one with wrong expectations being left dissapointed. It's a very low budget film and it's rather short at around 1.5 Hours including some end credits.

Movie Plot: Alone in her attic bedroom, teenager Casey becomes immersed in an online role-playing horror game, wherein she begins to document the changes that may or may not be happening to her.

Why I Loved This Movie

1. It Perfectly Understands and Portraits Internet Culture! I'm someone who has grown up with the internet and love the culture of it. In reality, none of the older established directors really connect to this and are able to translate this on the screen. It really takes a new younger generation of directors to do this. I expecially can think of the Movie Eight Grade by Bo Burnham which was the first movie that captured this internet culture feeling and I also really loved that one just like most people.

The entire premise of the movie is basically about this internet horror challenge where people who take part need to document the changes they experience after they did the challenge which creates a community and it perfectly shows how the internet can be something unlike anything else. It is one of the things I love and it was very enjoyable to see this done in this movie like it was.

2. The Underlying Theme!
I guess at the core this movie is really about modern day loneliness and how internet both helps and makes it worse in a way. It was done very well in that you easily can understand it without the need to really dig deep in too many details which many other movies at times tend to do.

3. An Excellent Soundtrack!
Whenever I want to look up songs from a movie I watched it had a great soundtrack capturing a certain feeling that was present in the movie. I don't have this too often but this certainly was the case for We're all going to the worlds fair!

This is one of the songs of the movies which kind of transforms me back into it and probably won't do anything if you haven't watched the movie yet.

4. I fully Understood The Movie!
With most movies I would say that I need to watch at least a couple youtube explained videos to fully grasp the plot, hidden themes, or details that I missed. However, for this one I felt I fully grasped everything about it at the end while understanding why for many who watch it this would not be the case. So the movie kind of made me feel smart which added to my enjoyment.

Conclusion

I fully understand why this movie isn't for everyone and why it get such a low score as I almost shut it off myself almost halfway into it. However if you enjoy internet culture and want a movie that perfectly captures this, "We're All Going To The World's Fair" might be one that surprises you positively just like it did for me.
