🎬 2025 Movie #16 | Under The Silver Lake (2018)

This blog is a personal journal of all the movies, Tv-Shows, & Games I consume during a year which enhances my overall experience. The ratings that I give are fully based on my personal preference and enjoyment at the time of watching and I'm writing spoiler-free reviews.

This movie got onto my radar last week through my brother in law who had not seen it yet but told me a brief plot of a women in an appartment and one day to another she was gone with the appartment being fully empty. This along with that he heard it's a movie that you either absolutely love or don't like at all which kind of explains the 6.5 Imdb score. I often give these movies a chance as there is nothing better to discover a movie not that many like but that fully itches your scratch. This is pretty much all I knew going into it along with the fact that it's a A24 movie from 2018 with Andrew Garfield playing the main role.

Under The Silver Lake (7.2/10)

This movie starts out with 4 quick screens flashing showing an image of a Unicorn / Tiger / Snake / Lion which when taken the first letters spalls UTSL which are the first letters of Under The Silver Lake.

This pretty much sums up one of the main plotlines of the movies which is how popular media is full of hidden messages for an underground society which the main character tries to uncover.

Spoiler-Free Movie Plot:

"The story is set in Los Angeles. We follow Sam who becomes fascinated by the disappearance of the mysterious Sarah and the strange murder of a billionaire. He discovers a link between the crime and a series of killed dogs. The tracks he follows lead him to the music world of independent bands. He gets help from his friend who helps investigate missing women."

So this is quite a strange movie with a lot of metaphores and scenes that you don't have to take literally with kind of a vibe of David Lynch I would think. Lots of nudity and sex also as male loneliness in a way is one of the hidden themes. Everything is made pretty well and the entire story kind of comes togheter in the end after 130+ Minutes even though I really questioned what I just watched leaving me kind of confused. However, watching a couple youtube explained videos really made me appreciate the movie a lot more and it is one you probably need to watch a couple of times to fully grasp it. I have no urge to do that though but I can fully understand in case this was a movie that got a 8.0 Rating on Imdb while I'm quite shocked that it only gets a 6.5/10 even though it was not a movie that blew me away. This mainly because this type of film isn't 100% my thing even though I can respect it.

You can easily watch the trailer without getting the movie spoiled

So for me the movie was ok and I enjoyed it but at the same time it's not 100% my thing. So a very respectable 7.2/10. If this type of movie is something you are into I can recommend it as you might be surprised to find a gem that doesn't have very high ratings. I'm glad that I watched it and will remember it for sure.

I'm biased for movie actors especially when it comes to Andrew Garfield. As long as he is in the movie, I have to give it a shot.

I'm quite sure that you will like this one as he's literally in every single scene and puts up a great performance. Can't think of anyone better to play the role in this film.

Thanks for stopping by!
