2025 Movie #10 | Winter In Sokcho (2024)

This blog is a personal journal of all the movies, Tv-Shows, & Games I consume during a year which enhances my overall experience. The ratings that I give are fully based on my personal preference and enjoyment at the time of watching and I'm writing spoiler-free reviews.

Winter In Sokcho was the 2nd movie I watched at the Oostende Film Festival this week and apparently the movie is a book adaptation. It's a Korean movie from 2024 which only has 142 votes on Imbd and a score of 6.8. So I didn't have any expectations whatsoever going into this one and I also had no clue what it would be about aside from that it's a Drama (Like 95% of the movies at Film Festivals). Generally I tend to like Korean and Japanese movies as I really relate the the culture over there as an introvert.

Winter In Sokcho (7.6/10)

Spoiler-Free Movie Plot:

"23-year-old Soo-Ha lives in Sokcho, a small coastal town in South Korea. There she leads a routine life with visits to her mother, a fishmonger, and her boyfriend Jun-oh, with whom she is in a relationship. The arrival of a Frenchman, Yan Kerrand, at the small boarding house where Soo-Ha works raises questions about her own identity and about her French father, about whom she knows almost nothing."

I actually really enjoyed watching this movie from start to end mainly because I really liked the lead character of Sooha which the entire story is about and the setting where the movie took place. A mid-small village in Korea where it's winter and where a girl lives close to her mom who sells fish on the market. She herself works some kind of Motel / Pension where she cooks and takes care of the ones who stay over. It's a fairly simple life which is something I can relate to and generally enjoy watching also.

Trailer

When it comes down to the plot of the movie, I can't say that I was overwhelmed by it and actually found it not even that important. The Male Supporting Character is a French artist type of person which I don't relate to at all and actually find a bit annoying but at the same time it didn't really bother me.

So with this movie, the Style, the main character, the setting & Location , the Music, the Other Korean Supporting Characters made me really enjoy it while the story and the lead Male Role which left me rather cold did not take away from any of the enjoyment. So I loved watching it while I by no means was blown away and I'm not sure if I will remember much about the movie a year from now aside that I had a great time never at any moment being bored. So a solid 7.6/10 I give this one!

Not all films that make it to festivals are overwhelming in terms of characters, effects or themes, but perhaps highlighting that simplicity was the reason it was chosen for the showcase.
Presenting that reality of foreigners related to women in a society that is so closed in terms of the selection of partners, may be the reason they want to highlight.

Sometimes rather simple movies are the best ones. Thanks for stopping by!
