Alvastra Monastery
Hi all nature lovers!
A grain of gold among Sweden's sights is the Alvastra monastery ruin on the slope of Omberg. Alvastra Monastery was a former Cistercian monastery founded in 1143 by monks from the French monastery Clairvaux and was together with Nydala monastery the first Cistercian monastery in the Nordic countries. The Alvastra monks in turn founded the monastery in Varnhem. The monastery operated without known interruptions until the monastery was dissolved around 1530 in connection with the Swedish Reformation. Today, only the ruins of the church and the other monastery buildings remain.
