Goku, a character who changed for the worse
I must not be the only one who after watching a few episode of Dragon Ball Super wondered: What happened to Goku? Why does he act in such a ridiculous way? Goku in the original Dragon Ball Z was not shown to be entirely stupid, he was innocent and somewhat naïve, but he was capable of telling between good and evil, besides he was the type of person who genuinely cared about the wellbeing of his friends and the universe, but in Dragon Ball Super, Goku seems like a completely different person, an unintelligent man, capable of risking the universe only for the sake of a whim, like fighting someone stronger than him.
I remember moments in Dragon Ball Z in which Goku acted in a serious manner, his power overwhelming, an example of this is when he tells Freezer to give up, that it didn’t make sense to keep fighting someone who was afraid of him, scenes like these no longer happen in Dragon Ball Super, sometimes to the point that it doesn’t seem like he is the same character anymore.
I remember that, in Dragon Ball GT, Goku had literally two completely different personalities, one of them was the one he showed 95% of the time as a child, something that didn’t make much sense either, since Pilaf wish was to make his body smaller, not to give him the mentality of a 12 years old… Then we had his other personality, the one he only showed when he was in Super Saiyan 4 mode, when he acted like an adult again.
Now in Dragon Ball Super, the Goku we are shown is entirely childish and selfish (something Goku never was, he could be rather careless but not selfish), this is a Goku that doesn’t seem to care about protecting or saving anyone, only following absurd whims, he is so badly written that now Vegeta seems like a better character and even a better person. What happened to you, Goku? You used to be cool, now you only stand out because you change hair colors like a rainbow and for having an endless number of transformations.
To be honest, is not just Goku what has become worse, the series itself has a softer tone; Goku is just one of the many things that have lost its quality… Of course, there are people who think Goku is still the same, even though deep inside these people know that’s not true, this Goku from DBS seems like a dude who has lost all intellectual capacities except for combat.
Do you think this is because of bad writing or maybe done deliberately? Is Goku acting like this intentionally?
Anyway, that’s all, but you guys know this is just my opinion, from what I’ve seen on the internet there a lot of people who think the same way, especially those who started watching DBZ in the 90s, like I did.

As for me, I think that Goku never really cared about saving the world in the first place, he just wanted to do his adventure and fight stronger foes. It just happens that in the previous series the earthlings are the casualty of those fights. Being a Saiyan explains everything there they live to fight and fight to live. True he may care but only to his close friends.
As the series changes, stronger foes exist his thirst for fighting increases more and more as well.
I think his personality had more layers in DBZ, because in Super he is more selfish and immature.
We have the exact same complaint, dude. The Goku of DBS is embarrassing. I agree that in DBZ he was a bit naive and innocent, but now he looks almost like a sociopath.

Exactly, he was completely flanderized. In super he always eager to fight with any stronger opponent no matter if the entire universe is destroyed in the process lol.
Flanderization hits many characters in a long running series as that original 'spark' behind their creation has been burnt out almost completely. It's also the amount of effort a creator puts into their later works that can definitely be recognized by fans. I think during Dragon Ball Super Akira Toriyama was only acting as an advisor to the series while others made the script and storyline.
A less hands-on method that is obviously shown when Goku is reduced to a constant fool in the Super series instead of just being naive with realization during serious moments.
It's tough seeing a beloved character be shown at a barebones capacity but we should take heart in knowing that the character we admired/adored can still be revisited in those previous entries in the series.
