Since I was a child, Batman became one of my favorite fictional characters. In fact, I remember having many of his toy figures, and enjoying most of his movies and also watching several of his animated series.

So when The Batman was announced, I was very eager to see what approach Matt Reeves would take for this character, mainly because I think this director is very good, as he did a terrific job with the characters and the story of the previous Planet of the Apes trilogy.

The first thing that caught my attention about The Batman was the more neglected, rough, and dirty appearance of Gotham City. In fact, in this aspect, it reminded me a bit of the Detroit that appears in the original Robocop movie, as this new version of Gotham feels more dangerous and dominated by crime compared to the more refined and elegant version of the city that Nolan presented in his trilogy.

As for the characters, I think Robert Pattinson managed to bring to life a very different version of Batman from all the previous ones. His version reflects a man being consumed by hatred towards criminals. In fact, the character often behaves irrationally due to his obsession with pursuing them, to such an extent that it seems he doesn't care at all about maintaining his public image as Bruce Wayne.

One thing to note is that Pattinson’s Batman and Bruce Wayne behave similarly, meaning that in this movie, there is no noticeable difference between the two personalities. It should be clarified that I don’t see this as a bad thing, as it is clear that Matt Reeves’ intention was to show the character in an early and unstable phase, where he hasn't yet figured out how to balance his two identities.

In addition, I believe that the rest of the characters in this movie were not given their own proper narrative arcs; they seem more like pieces that depend too much on Batman’s actions to move forward. For example, Chief Gordon doesn’t question the vigilante of Gotham at all, he fully trusts him, defends him, and follows him wherever he goes as if he were his number one fan. This doesn't make much sense to me because they are supposed to have been working together for a short time in this movie. If you remember Nolan’s trilogy, Gordon was always a character who didn't blindly obey Batman, even though in those movies it was shown in detail how they formed a strong alliance to fight crime. Also, that version of Gordon had his own conflicts that contributed to his character development.

On the other hand, I found this version of the Riddler interesting; in fact, I felt he was a more realistic psychopath, perhaps because Reeves was inspired by a real-life serial killer whom the U.S. authorities never managed to capture. Regarding the character of Carmine Falcone, I was quite disappointed, as in this movie he felt like a generic mobster who is simply bad for the sake of being bad.

It felt like Falcone didn't have any personality or depth, especially when compared to other versions of the character, like the one in The Long Halloween. In that one, besides being a criminal, he has a very interesting dynamic with his family and mafia colleagues, to give you a better idea, that version of the character is kind of similar to Vito Corleone from The Godfather.

However, I think Selina Kyle’s character is more interesting than this bland version of Gordon, although I don’t think her story is as complete as Michelle Pfeiffer’s version in Batman Returns. On the other hand, despite having only a handful of appearances, I think the Penguin in this movie, with his cynicism and dark humor, steals every scene he’s in. He definitely seemed to be the best of all the secondary characters to me.

Now I have to say that there were parts of the movie where I felt the development of the story stalled, either because there were scenes that seemed too long or because they repeatedly told you something that had already been made clear. For example, there are some scenes focused on the murders committed by the Riddler that in the end do not contribute to anything significant. Look, I’m not a filmmaker, but I think those minutes could have been used to give a better development to the other characters, especially Alfred, who hardly appears in this movie.

In conclusion, although The Batman did not end up being the great spectacle I expected as a fan of the character, I consider it to be an interesting enough movie, mainly thanks to its tremendous atmosphere and the intriguing performance of Pattinson as the titular character.

Desde que era pequeño Batman se convirtió en uno de mis personajes favoritos de la ficción, de hecho recuerdo haber tenido muchos de sus juguetes, disfrutado de la mayoría de sus películas y varias de sus series animadas.

Así que cuando se anuncio The Batman, estaba muy deseoso de ver que enfoque le iba a dar Matt Reeves a este personaje, principalmente porque pienso que este director es muy bueno, ya que hizo un excelente trabajo con los personajes y la historia de la trilogía pasada del planeta de los simios.

Pues bien, lo primero que me llamó la atención de The Batman fue la apariencia más descuidada, áspera y sucia de ciudad gótica, de hecho en este aspecto me recordó un poco a la Detroit que aparece en la película original de Robocop, ya que esta nueva versión de Gótica se siente más peligrosa y dominada por la criminalidad en comparación con la versión más refinada y elegante de la ciudad que planteo Nolan en su trilogía.

En cuanto a los personajes, pienso que Robert Pattinson logró darle vida a un Batman muy diferente a todos los anteriores. Su versión refleja a un hombre que esta siendo consumiendo por el odio hacia los criminales, es más muchas veces el personaje se comporta de forma irracional debido a lo obsesionado que esta con perseguirlos, llega a tal extremo que pareciera que a él no le importará para nada cuidar su imagen pública como Bruce Wayne.

Algo a descartar es que el Batman y el Bruce Wayne de Pattinson se comportan de la misma manera, es decir, en esta película no se aprecia una diferencia entre ambas personalidades. Cabe aclarar que esto no me parece algo malo, ya que se nota que la intención de Matt Reeves era mostrarte al personaje en una faceta temprana e inestable, en la que todavía no ha sabido cómo encontrar un equilibrio entre sus dos identidades.

Ahora considero que al resto de personajes principales de esta película no se les dio adecuadamente sus propios arcos narrativos, ellos más bien parecen piezas que para poder moverse dependen demasiado de lo que haga Batman. Por ejemplo, el jefe Gordon no le cuestiona nada al vigilante de Gótica, confía plenamente en él, lo defiende y lo sigue a donde sea que vaya como si fuese su fanático número uno, esto para mí no tiene mucha coherente porque se supone que ellos llevan poco tiempo trabajando juntos en esta película. Si recuerdan la trilogía de Nolan, Gordon siempre fue un personaje que no obedecía ciegamente a Batman, a pesar de que en esas películas mostraron detalle a detalle como ambos formaban una fuerte alianza para combatir el crimen, además allá Gordon si tenía sus propios conflictos que servían para el crecimiento del personaje.

Por otro lado si me pareció interesante esta versión del acertijo, de hecho lo sentí como un psicópata más realista, quizá porque para crearlo, Reeves se inspiró en un asesino serial de la vida real que las autoridades estadounidenses nunca pudieron capturar. Por su parte, me decepciono bastante lo que hicieron con el personaje de Carmine Falcone, ya que en esta película lo sentí como un mafioso genérico que simplemente es malo porque si.

Honestamente no sentí qué Falcone tuviese una personalidad ni profundidad, especialmente si lo comparo con otras versiones del personaje, como la que aparece en The Long Halloween, allá él además de ser un criminal, tiene una dinámica muy interesante con su familia y sus colegas de la mafia, para darles una mejor idea es algo así como Vito Corleone del Padrino.

En cuanto a Selina Kyle, desempeña su papel bastante mejor que el insípido de Gordon, aunque no me parece que su historia este tan completa como la de la versión de Michelle Pfeiffer de Batman Returns. Por otro lado a pesar de que tiene pocas apariciones creo que el Pingüino con su cinismo y humor negro se roba cada escena en la que aparece, definitivamente el me pareció el mejor de todos los personajes secundarios.

Ahora tengo que decir que hubo partes de la película en donde sentí que el desarrollo de la historia se estancaba, ya sea porque había escenas que me parecieron demasiado largas o porque te contaban repetidamente algo que ya se había dejado claro. Por ejemplo hay algunas escenas enfocadas en los asesinatos cometidos por el acertijo que al final no terminan aportando nada significativo. A ver, yo no soy cineasta, pero pienso que esos minutos hubiesen podido ser aprovechados para darles un mejor desarrollo a los otros personajes, especialmente a Alfred que casi no aparece en esta película.

En conclusión, a pesar de que The Batman no terminó siendo el gran espectáculo que yo esperaba como fan del personaje, considero que es una película lo suficientemente interesante, principalmente gracias a su tremenda ambientación y por la intrigante interpretación de Robert Pattinson como el personaje titular.
