Review of Catch Me If You Can / Reseña de Atrápame si puedes

Fiction based on the true story of Frank Abagnale (or at least, in his accounts of his life), a check forger who pretended to be a pilot, doctor, and lawyer, all before turning 19, in the 1960s.

So, after an introduction that shows Frank's happy family life, where it's evident that his father initiated him in some way into the arts of deceit and seduction, things start to go wrong when his father begins to have financial problems, resulting in a decrease in their material comforts. Subsequently, Frank sees his mother starting an affair with a friend of his father (and even bribing him not to tell his father), and when the marriage finally ends in divorce, a lawyer or notary asks Frank to choose who will be his legal guardian... to which he flees from home and leaves on a train, taking advantage of the fact that his father had created a bank account for him and given him a checkbook with some money.

To continue surviving without returning home, Frank will find a way to live off counterfeit checks and adopt different disguises (characters), and when someone at the FBI notices, the cat-and-mouse game begins...

The Best

The two main characters

Both DiCaprio's performance and his character: Frank is not a cold, unflappable calculating machine who adapts effortlessly to everything, but rather everything is a struggle for him, and this is subtly noticeable to the viewer, even if it's not so visible to the other characters. He is a genius at improvisation and a brilliant mind in general, but DiCaprio excellently conveys the tension he experiences in maintaining his deceptions.

Furthermore, a key element is that he is portrayed as someone who had a dream born out of deep denial: the denial that his happy family would never exist again. That's why he wanted to make money and help his father win back his mother, to the point that when he finally realizes it won't happen, he unrealistically asks his pursuer to stop so he would stop his crimes as well.

On the other hand, there is the FBI fraud expert, Carl Hanratty, someone completely dedicated to his work, whom Tom Hanks portrays as he usually does with his characters, not turning them into simple stereotypes that detach from the script but bringing them to life. Moreover, he is an antagonist but not a villain.

Furthermore, the supporting cast's performances are also very good.

Constant tension: the game of cunning, the need for improvisation, and the planning stages of the deceptions are ever-present.

The editing: there is a lot of excellent camera work that gives speed to the movie. There is also skillful handling of temporal jumps, showing flashforwards of when Frank has already been caught.

the boy who ran away from home, caused serious problems, and was sent to prison with no purpose in life, finds one thanks to the empathetic relationship he forged coincidentally with his pursuer, which turns into friendship in the end, and they start working together to catch other counterfeiters.

The Worst

Nothing stood out as "bad" because the story tells what it apparently intends to tell very well. I suppose if you don't like the story, it's because you want to see a different type of story, not because this one is bad.

Ficción basada en la historia real de Frank Abagnale (o por lo menos en lo que él ha dicho), un falsificador de cheques que fingió ser piloto de avión, médico y abogado, todo esto antes de cumplir 19 años, en la década del 60.

Así, tras una introducción donde se muestra la feliz vida familiar de Frank, donde ya se ve que su padre lo inició en cierta forma en las artes del engaño y la seducción, las cosas empiezan a ir mal cuando su padre empieza a tener problemas económicos, lo que resulta en una disminución de sus comodidades materiales; posteriormente, la Frank ve que su madre comienza un affaire con un amigo de su padre (e incluso ella lo soborna para que no le cuente a su padre) y cuando finalmente el matrimonio llega a un divorcio, un abogado o escribano le pide a Frank que elija quién será su guardián legal… ante lo cual él huye de la casa y se va en tren aprovechando que su padre le había creado una cuenta bancaria y dado una chequera con un poco de dinero.

Para continuar sobreviviendo sin regresar a su casa, Frank buscará la forma de vivir de cheques falsificados y de adoptar distintas caracterizaciones (personajes) y cuando alguien en el FBI se da cuenta, comienza el juego del gato y el ratón…

Lo mejor

Los dos personajes principales:

Tanto la actuación de Di Caprió como su personaje: Frank no es un frío calculador imperturbable que se adpata a todo sin problema, sino que todo le cuesta y eso se nota en cosas sutiles para el espectador pero que no son lo bastante visibles para los otros personajes. Es un genio de la improvisación y una mente brillante en general, pero Di Caprio logra transmitir excelentemente la tensión que le cuesta mantener sus engaños.

Además, un elemento clave es que se lo caracterizó como alguien que tenía un sueño fruto de una profunda negación: la negación de que su familia feliz no volvería a existir. Por eso quería ganar dinero y ayudar a su padre a recuperar a su madre, al punto de que cuando finalmente se da cuenta de que no va poder ser así, le pide también irrealiztamente, a su perseguidor que se detenga y él lo haría tan bien.

Por otro lado, está el miembro del FBI experto en fraudes, Carl Hanratty, alguien dedicado enteramente a su trabajo, que Tom Hanks interpreta como muy bien él suele hacer con sus personajes de no volverlos simples estereotipos que se desprendan del guion, sino que les da vida. Además, es un antagonista, pero no un villano.

Por lo demás, también las actuaciones de los secundarios son muy buenas.

La tensión constante: el juego de astucia, la necesidad de improvisar y las fases de planeamiento de los engaños son permanentes.

Los montajes: hay mucho y muy buen juego de cámaras que dotan de velocidad a la película. También es un buen manejo de los saltos temporales, pues se muestran flashforwards de cuando Frank ya fue atrapado.

El adolescente que huyó de casa, ocasionó problemas graves y fue enviado a prisión sin ningún objetivo en la vida, encuentra uno gracias a la relación de empatía que forjó casualmente con su atrapador, que se convierte al final en amistad y se ponen a trabajar juntos para atrapar a otros falsificadores.

Lo peor

Nada me llamó la atención como “malo” porque la historia cuenta muy bien lo que aparentemente quiere contar. Supongo que si no te gusta la historia es porque querés ver otro tipo de historia, no porque esta sea mala.
