Review H2O JUST ADD WATER / Reseña H2O SIRENAS DEL MAR

Introduction

By chance, I came across this excellent series 10 or 12 years ago when I was specifically looking for series with female protagonists to compare them with those of male protagonists, and it was just at the end of episode 2, so I was able to watch it almost entirely from the beginning.

Then I watched it again in English, although I wasn't as good with it then and also this series has an Australian accent, which I wasn't used to. But a couple of years ago, in addition to wanting to watch it again for its own sake, I was going to take the Cambridge B2First exam, so I was immersing myself in listening to audiobooks and watching series and movies in English, and I included this one on the list. Then I left it unfinished in the last season and finally finished watching it recently and confirmed how good it is.

Plot

Three girls, friends Cleo and Emma, and a third they recently met, Rikki, end up accidentally stranded for a few hours on an island, Mako Island. There, while exploring and waiting for a boat to pick them up, they fall into a "pool" cave and swim out through below it to the ocean, but all three enter just as the moon passes over the pool through the opening in the cave roof. The water reacts strangely, although nothing else seems to happen.

However, the next day the magic manifests itself: each one, when wet with just a drop of water, after a few secons gets transformed into a mermaid and remains so until completely dry. To complicate things even more, while also help them, they discover that they have powers: Cleo controls water can move it and can change its volume; Emma can freeze it; and Rikki can heat it.

The series then unfolds in its first season with the girls trying to hide their new identity from everyone to avoid ending up as laboratory specimens while dealing with their everyday problems, sometimes complicated by magical issues, especially during full moon nights, where gazing at the moon or its reflection affects their powers and minds.

The characters

Cleo is shy, somewhat naive, and indecisive because she wants to be too nice, which leads her to not choose sides, but she evolves throughout the three seasons, gaining more confidence, assertiveness, and wit. And in the third season, she also acquires the same appreciation and dedication to science as her friend Lewis.

Emma is confident as long as everything goes as planned, being controlling and somewhat obsessive with her plans and order, although she loosens up a bit over time.

Rikki is the wildest, most sarcastic, and impulsive, and solitary, but she reduces her more aggressive traits and becomes friendlier.

Good supporting characters are added to the protagonists, of which the most important are Lewis and Zane.

Lewis is Cleo's childhood friend and they have a slowly developing romantic attraction. He discovers by chance the secret of the mermaids at the end of the second episode and becomes their helper to prevent them from being discovered. He is also a self-proclaimed scientist (self-proclaimed because he studies a lot of science and thinks like a scientist, but he is not one and has not worked as one) and tries to find explanations or help for them with science, although sometimes his attempts to help make things worse. On the other hand, he is not the stereotypical socially awkward nerd, but rather, although he is not "popular," he has a great sense of humor and knows how to interact with people very well.

And Zane is the bad boy, troublemaker, easily offended, who will cause several problems, especially when he discovers that there is "something" special in the ocean and starts searching for answers. He will also have a special on-and-off relationship with Rikki.

Special mention to Cleo's malicious and Machiavellian younger sister, Kim, who brings humor and problems.

The best things of the series are the dynamics and character development, and the humor, which is stronger in the first season and gradually makes room for more drama in the others. The length of the episodes is also very good, around 25 minutes: if they had tried to make them 40 or 45 minutes long, they would have had to fill them with unnecessary minutes that would have diluted the good points of the series, but with 25 minutes, the episodes are well-contained.

Also, after Emma left the series because the actress had already committed to making a movie (the third season was added later due to the great success of the initially planned two seasons), her replacement, Bella, does not try to replace her personality, but rather is different from the three girls and fits well with Cleo and Rikki, and also brings music to the series as she is a singer.

Por casualidad me topé con esta excelente serie hará 10 o 12 años cuando buscaba series específicamente con protagonistas mujeres para compararlas con las de protagonistas hombres, y fue justo por el final del capítulo 2, así que pude verla prácticamente entera desde el principio.

Luego la reví en inglés, aunque no era entonces tan bueno con él y además esta serie tiene el acento australiano, que no era al que estaba acostumbrado. Pero hace un par de años, además de porque tenía ganas de volver a verla por sí misma, iba a dar el examen B2First de Cambridge por lo que estaba imbuyéndome de escuchar audiolibros y ver serie y películas en inglés, e incluí esta en la lista. Luego la dejé sin terminar la última temporada y finalmente hace poco terminé de verla y confirmar lo buena que es.

Argumento

Tres chicas, las amigas Cleo y Emma, y una tercera que hace poco conocen, Rikki, terminan por accidente varadas por unas horas en una isla, la isla Mako. Allí, mientras exploran esperando que vaya a buscarlas un barco, caen a una cueva “con piscina” y se meten en ella para salir nadando por abajo hacia el océano, pero las tres se meten justo cuando la luna pasa por encima de la piscina por la abertura del techo de la cueva. El agua reacciona de forma extraña, aunque nada más parece pasar.

Sin embargo, al día siguiente se manifiesta la magia: cada una, al mojarse hasta con sólo una gotita de agua, después de unos segundos se transforma en una sirena y quedan así hasta que se secan por completo. Para complicar, aunque también ayudar, todavía más las cosas, descubren que tienen poderes: Cleo controla el agua y puede hacerle cambiar su volumen; Emma puede congelarla; y Rikki puede calentarla.

La serie se desarrolla entonces en su primera temporada con las chicas tratando de ocultar su nueva identidad a todos para no terminar como especímenes de laboratorio al tiempo que lidian con sus problemas cotidianos, complicados a veces por más problemas mágicos, en especial durante las noches de luna llena, donde contemplar la luna o su reflejo afecta sus poderes y sus mentes.

Los personajes

Cleo es tímida, algo ingenua, e indecisa por querer ser demasiado agradable, lo que la lleva a no elegir lados, pero evoluciona a lo largo de las tres temporadas adquiriendo más confianza, asertividad e ingenio, y en la tercera temporada adquiere también el mismo aprecio y dedicación de su amigo Lewis a la ciencia.

Emma es segura de sí mientras todo le vaya como planeó, siendo controladora y algo obsesiva con sus planes y el orden, aunque se suelta un poco con el tiempo.

Rikki es la más salvaje y sarcástica e impulsiva, y solitaria, pero va reduciendo sus rasgos más agresivos y se vuelve más simpática.

A las protagonistas se les suman buenos personajes secundarios, de los cuales los más importantes son Lewis y Zane.

Lewis es el amigo de la infancia de Cleo y tienen una atracción romántica de lento desarrollo y él descubre por suerte el secreto de las sirenas al final del segundo capítulo y se convierte en su ayudante para evitar que sean descubiertas. Además, es un autoproclamado científico (autoproclamado porque estudia mucho ciencia y piensa como científico, pero no es uno ni ha trabajado como tal) y trata de encontrar las explicaciones o las ayudas con ciencia, aunque a veces sus intentos de ayuda empeoran las cosas. Por otra parte, no es el estereotípico nerd sin habilidades sociales, sino que, por el contrario, aunque no sea un “popular”, tiene muy buen sentido del humor y sabe interactuar con la gente muy bien.

Y Zane es el chico malo, buscapleitos, fácilmente ofendido, que ocasionará varios problemas, en especial cuando descubra que hay “algo” especial en el océano y empiece a buscar respuestas. Además, tendrá una relación especial de idas y vueltas con Rikki.

Mención especial a la maliciosa y maquiavélica hermana menor de Cleo, Kim, que aporta humor y problemas.

Lo mejor de la serie son la dinámica y el desarrollo de personajes, el humor, que es más fuerte en la primera temporada y en las otras va dejando algo de más lugar para el drama. También el largo de los episodios es muy bueno, de uno 25 minutos: si hubieran intentado hacerlos de 40 o 45 habrían tenido que meter mucho relleno de minutos que habría dispersado los buenos puntos de la serie, pero con 25 minutos quedaron muy bien contenidos los capítulos.

También que, tras la salida de Emma de la serie porque la actriz ya se había comprometido para hacer una película (la tercera temporada se agregó tardíamente debido al gran éxito que tuvieron las, inicialmente, únicamente dos temporadas planeadas), su remplazo, Bella, no intenta ser un remplazo de su personalidad, sino que es distinta a las tres chicas y se amolda bien con Cleo y Rikki, y además aporta música a la serie, pues es cantante.
