Movie review: Tau
It is a very good movie, driven by suspense, but not exceptional.
It quickly moves to the problem, with the protagonist, Julia, being kidnapped within the first few minutes and with a prison and experimentation environment that created the atmosphere of a suspenseful horror.
However, it soon shifts towards a scientific-technological suspense: the AI Tau and its development and existence, as well as what Julia's fate will be, whether she will survive or not, or with what consequences. Tau has very good lighting effects to reflect its moods and reactions, and a great voice performance by Gary Oldman.
Philosophically, it poses the big question of what a person is and whether Tau can be one. Tau calls itself a person and understands what death is when Julia reveals to it that the previous experimental subjects were erased, which Tau understands because the psychopath Alex who created Tau and kidnapped and killed people erases parts of its code as punishment if it fails a task.
By the way, the movie is from 2018, and what was science fiction then, now, in 2024 it almost isn't.
Main problem of the movie: The trailer gave the impression that it was going to be a movie with more action and/or horror than it actually had, thus creating expectations that would not be met, and this usually affects the final enjoyment of a movie.
Spoiler critique
It is implausible that Julia cut off Alex's hand without killing him first or without him bleeding out afterward, but in any case, he didn't do anything except die crushed, so it's not a serious mistake.
Es una muy buena película, sostenida en el suspenso, pero no exceptional.
Pasa rápidamente al problema, con la protagonista, Julia, secuestrada dentro de los primeros minutos y con un ambiente de prisión y experimentación que creaba la atmósfera de un suspenso de terror.
Sin embargo, pronto cambia hacia un suspenso científico-tecnológico: la IA Tau y su desarrollo y existencia, así como cuál será el fin de Julia, si sobrevivirá o no, o con qué consecuencias. Tau tiene muy buenos juegos de luces o iluminación de pantalla para sus estados de animo y reacciones, y una gran acción de voz de Gary Oldman.
En lo filosófico, se plantea la gran pregunta de qué es una persona y si Tau puede serlo, y se llama a sí mismo una persona, y entiende qué es la muerte cuando Julia le revela que los anteriores sujetos experimentales fueron borrados, que es lo que Tau entiende porque el psicópata Alex que creó a Tau y secuestró y mató personas borra partes de su código como castigo si falla una tarea.
Por cierto, la película es del 2018 y ahora, en el 2024, lo que era ciencia ficción entonces ya casi no lo es.
Principal problema de la película: El tráiler daba la impresión de que iba a ser una película con más acción y/o terror que la que tuvo, por ende creando expectativas que no se cumplirían, y eso habitualmente afecta el gusto final por una película.
Crítica con espóiler
inverosímil que Julia le haya cortado la mano a Álex sin haberlo matado antes o sin que se desangrara después, pero en cualquier caso él ya no llegó a hacer nada excepto morir aplastado, así que no es un error grave.
