Ha if you wanted them to talk it out or get therapy you've missed the point of the film - that's absolutely not what Australian men do, especially at the time.
Australia has a really good back catalogue of darker than dark films - Romper Stomper, Bad Boy Bubby, Lantana, Animal Kingdom, Snowton, Chopper - some are just horrifying in their griminess.
David Wenham looks so young here. He went on to play a heartthrob in a series filmed quite near me. Lately he played a narcissistic compulsive liar in a limited series called 'Fake' which was okay.
And oh boy - you also missed the point about how much people smoked in the '90s.
It was also based on the murder of Anita Cobby in the '80's - this was an awful crime which really rattled Australia. I still remember it being reported, though I was just a teenager at the time. It was such a brutal, vicious crime they even wanted to bring back the death penalty.
I honestly have no idea how Australian men live life or handle situations. I also stated at the beginning of the post that I rarely watch Australian films(I'll start checking them out more often).
I also had no idea about people smoking lots in the 90s. I haven't really studied much about that generation. I reviewed the film based on how I felt about it. However, I'm extra grateful for this breakdown. It has given me insight into what to expect if I should see any film with a familiar style.

Oh I hope you don't think I was criticizing YOU at all, I was just adding to what you knew about the film to help you understand the context. Oh yeah we smoked a lot in the 90s.
