Wanted (2008) review: John Wick's awful dad.

Although when we hear the name "Mark Millar" (At least in the world of comics) the first thing that comes to mind are works like Kick-Ass, Kingsman or Old Man Logan, there is a perfect example of the virtues of irreverent British screenwriter who usually goes under the table, which, by the way, had the "fortune" of receiving a live action adaptation about 16 years ago: Wanted.
And while it is important to recognize that in terms of quality this film does not even come close to the counterparts of the aforementioned examples, it is undeniable that it is a perfect example of the philosophy that the 2000s followed in many ways.
Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, in Wanted we follow the story of a young man annoyed with the state of his own life, involved in a relationship that he hates with a woman who is being unfaithful to him, and trapped in a pathetic job that barely gives him enough money. to survive.
What Wesley Gibson does not know is that his father (Whom he never met) was part of an elite league of assassins, and, as his father is his son, several superhuman abilities lie in his blood that he must learn to develop.
Within this premise it is easy to glimpse the virtues and defects that plague a film like "Wanted" that, despite taking a large amount of creative liberties with respect to its original work, preserves its thematic heart.
Although it is difficult to synthesize the experience of watching "Wanted", I think it would be accurate to define it as a prototypical version of more recent classics of the action genre such as John Wick (Or Kingsman itself), who despite sharing an interesting world building and crazy action scenes with Bekmambetov's work, they also take the trouble to present themselves in a much more pleasant way.
At its core, Wanted feels like a parody of action 2000, hell-bent on bastardizing the directing style of a filmmaker like Fincher (Fight Club) with an overwhelming pace and a soundtrack hell-bent on using alternative rock.
However, not everything is negative, apart from the fact that world building can be interesting (If we don't question its own internal logic) there are a couple of great performances by actors like James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie and even Morgan Freeman.
Beyond this there is little to say, entertaining but nauseating.

Aunque cuando escuchamos el nombre de "Mark Millar" (Al menos en el mundo de los comics) lo primero que se los viene a la mente son obras como Kick-Ass, Kingsman o Old Man Logan, existe un ejemplo perfecto de las virtudes del irreverente guionista británico que suele pasar por debajo de la mesa, el cual, por cierto, tuvo la "fortuna" de recibir una adaptación en live action hace unos 16 años: Wanted.
Y si bien es importante reconocer que en términos de calidad esa película no le llega ni a los talones a las contrapartes de los ejemplos antes mencionados, es innegable que se trata de una muestra perfecta de la filosofía que seguían los 2000 en muchísimos sentidos.
Dirigida por Timur Bekmambetov, en Wanted seguimos la historia de un jovén fastidiado con el estado de su propia vida, envuelto en una relación que detesta con una mujer que le esta siendo infiel, y atrapado en un patético trabajo que a penas le da dinero suficiente para sobrevivir.
Lo que Wesley Gibson no sabe es que su padre (A quien nunca conoció) formaba parte de una liga élite de asesinos, y, al ser su hijo, yacen en su sangre varias habilidades sobrehumanas que debe aprender a desarrollar.
Dentro de esta premisa es fácil entrever las virtudes y los defectos que plagan un film como "Wanted" que, pese a tomar una gran cantidad de libertades creativas con respecto a su obra originaria, conserva el corazón temático de la misma.
Aunque es díficil sintetizar la experienia que supone ver "Wanted", creo que sería acertado definirla como una versión prototipo de clasicos más recientes del género de acción como John Wick (O la misma Kingsman), quienes a pesar de compartir un world building interesante y escenas de acción alocadas con la obra de Bekmambetov, también se toman la molestia de presentarse así mismas de forma mucho más grata.
En esencia, Wanted se siente como una parodia a la acción 2000, empeñada en bastardizar el estilo de dirección de un cineasta como Fincher (Fight Club) con un ritmo agobiante y una banda sonora empeñada en usar rock alternativo.
No obstante, no todo es negativo, aparte de que el world building puede llegar a ser interesante (Si no cuestionamos su propia lógica interna) hay un par de performances estupendos por parte de actores como James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie e incluso Morgan Freeman.
Más allá de esto hay poco que decir, entretenida pero nauseabunda.
