"Trap" - A (Good) Shyamalan experience.

As you'd expect from an M. Night Shyamalan film, it was practically impossible not to feel an absurd level of attraction to its fascinating premise, especially since the "twist" (an element so characteristic of his filmography that it has become a meme) was revealed to us from the very first trailer.

Thus, in "Trap" we would follow the story of a father who decides to take his daughter to the concert of one of her favorite pop stars, and this event turns out to be a trap (yes) to catch a serial killer that the police know will be in the audience.

And what's the twist? Simple: The killer they're looking for is precisely the father.

I love that Trap has this revelation as a starting point because it serves to generate many doubts in two senses: the past and the future. Creating a situation of constant tension where we are waiting to see if the protagonist (played by Josh Hartnett) will be able to get out unscathed, but at the same time trying to understand how the police knew he would be there and what his motivation has been to commit so many heinous crimes in the past.

"Trap" exists in a perpetual state of unpredictability, which, while it can fall into the implausible from time to time, generally serves to keep us hooked, not only because the plot is entertaining, but because the audiovisual execution that accompanies it is extremely neat, starting from the concert around which the chase revolves (Special mention to Shyamalan's daughter, who created several original songs for the project), to the general direction and photography.

It is far from being a perfect film and there are a couple of details within its plot that literally falter if we look at it with a critical eye, but in general it knows how to carry out its premise and surprises us with a couple of surprisingly emotional moments.

Cómo es de esperarse con un film de M. Night Shyamalan, era prácticamente imposible no sentir un nivel de atracción absurda por su fascinante premisa, especialmente porque el "twist" (un elemento tan característico dentro de su filmografía que se ha convertido en un meme) se nos revelaba desde el mismísimo primer trailer.

Así es que, en "Trap" seguiríamos la historia de un padre que decide llevar a su hija al concierto de una de sus estrellas pop favoritas, y este evento resulta ser una trampa (si) para atrapar a un asesino serial que la policía sabe estará dentro del público.

¿Y cuál es el twist? Sencillo: El asesino que están buscando es precisamente el padre.

Me encanta que trap cuente con esta relevación como punto de partida porque sirve para generarnos muchas dudas en dos sentidos: el pasado y el futuro. Creando una situación de tensión constante en dónde estamos a la expectativa de si el protagonista (Interpretado por Josh Hartnett) podrá salir ileso, pero al mismo tiempo tratando de comprender como la policía supo que el estaría allí y cuál ha sido su motivación para cometer tantos crimenes atroces en el pasado.

"Trap" existe en un estado perpetuo de impredectibilidad, que, si bien puede caer en lo inverosímil de vez en cuando, generalmente sirve para mantenernos enganchados, no solo porque la trama sea entretenida, sino porque la ejecución audiovisual que le acompaña es extremadamente prolija, partiendo desde el concierto sobre el cual gira alrededor la persecución (Mención especial a la hija de Shyamalan, que creo varias canciones originales para el proyecto), hasta la dirección y fotografía general.

Dista de ser una película perfecta y existen un par de detalles dentro de su trama que se tambalean literalmente si lo vemos con un ojo crítico, pero en general sabe llevar a cabo su premisa y nos sorprende con un par de momentos sorprendentemente emocionales.
