They Cloned Tyrone (2023) review: Black surrealism strikes again.

I know it's hard to try to review a film like They Cloned Tyrone while totally ignoring the racial issue, as well as the undeniable influence of filmmakers like Jordan Peele and Donald Glover, who have tried to adapt black surrealism into the 21st century, organically incorporating the social criticism with all the aesthetics that we usually associate with African-American culture: music, slang, the way of dressing, etc.

And while all of these elements are present in the film by Juel Taylor (who is technically making his mainstream film debut this time), I like that while all of this is crucial to making They Cloned Throne work both in terms of style and substance, does not neglect what we expect from any decent movie.

First of all I am happy to see an actor of the stature of John Boyega in a role that allows him to show his true potential: in Fontaine, we see a man haunted by his past, who can hardly be defined as "good", but who it has enough complexity to make us feel trapped and connect with its positive and negative actions. Next to him we have an equally neat cast, where Jamie Foxx stands out in the role of Slick Charles, a pimp who starts out as a vulgar caricature but progressively becomes more and more dense.

Those familiar with the "influences" I mentioned previously will know that They Cloned Tyrone could be defined as anything but a "realistic" story, something that can be discerned from its name itself.

In this way, we are immersed in a town in decline, where a group of men with rather cynical intentions have decided to experiment with the black population to try to move humanity forward.

Although those reviews that define it as a Get Out what if seem extremely reductionist to me, it is not imprecise to include this film in a cocktail of influences where we would also find Atlanta, The Clockwork Orange, and Why Not? The Boondocks.

I appreciate that it doesn't feel restricted by any mold and that it knows how to make the most of the possibilities of its own premise, constantly mutating between drama, comedy, science fiction and action.

It's a brilliantly shot movie, with great music and a script that flows so smoothly. Without a doubt, in terms of quality it is far above any other Sunday flick that we can find on Netflix.

Y si bien todos estos elementos están presentes en la cinta de Juel Taylor (quien técnicamente está debutando en el cine mainstream con este filme), me gusta que si bien todo esto es crucial para que They Cloned Throne funcione tanto en terminos de estilo como de sustancia, no descuida aquello que esperamos de cualquier película decente.

Primero que nada me alegra ver a un actor de la talla de John Boyega en un rol que le permite demostrar su verdadero potencial: en Fontaine, vemos a un hombre atormentado por su pasado, que difícilmente pueda ser definido como "bueno", pero que cuenta con suficiente complejidad como para que nos sintamos y atrapados y conectemos con sus acciones positivas y negativas. A su lado tenemos un cast igual de prolijo, en dónde destaca Jamie Foxx en rol de Slick Charles, un proxeneta que comienza siendo una caricatura vulgar pero que progresivamente va adquiriendo cada vez más densidad.

Aquellos que estén familiarizados con las "influencias" que mencioné previamente sabrán que They Cloned Tyrone podría definirse como todo menos que como una historia "realista", algo que se puede discernir desde su propio nombre.

De esta forma, se nos sumerge en un pueblo en decadencia, en dónde un grupo de hombres con intenciones bastante cínicas ha decidido experimentar con la población negra para tratar de mover la humanidad hacia adelante.

Si bien me parecen extremadamente reduccionistas aquellas reseñas que la definen como un what if de Get Out, no es impreciso incluir está película en un cocktail de influencias en dónde también encontraríamos Atlanta, The Clockwork Orange, y ¿Por qué no? The Boondocks.

Aprecio que no se vea restringida por ningún molde y que sepa aprovechar al máximo las posibilidades de su propia premisa, mutando constantemente entre el drama, la comedia, la ciencia ficción y la acción.

Es una película grabada de manera brillante, tiene música estupenda y un guión que fluye con muchísima suavidad. Sin duda, en términos de calidad está muy por encima de cualquier otro flick dominguero que podemos encontrar en Netflix.
