The Beauty of Dune Part 2.

After procrastinating for an absurd amount of time I finally had the opportunity to see Dune Part 2, one of the most important science fiction/fantasy films of the last few decades.

A couple of weeks ago I was talking to you about how Dune Part 1 seemed to me to be a brilliant project that, despite being structured as the beginning of a much larger and more complex story, knew how to establish all its narrative elements very well, creating a film in which it happened " little thing' but at the same time it generated in its viewers an indescribable desire to continue the story, something quite risky considering that at that time Denis Villeneuve did not even have the production of its sequel assured.

In the long run the experiment worked, and the passage of these last few years has only increased the hype about this adaptation of Frank Herbert's iconic books.

In this context comes Dune 2, an epic of biblical proportions that uses the brilliant foundations established by the first part to create the modern equivalent of Empire Strikes Back, only better...

Retaining the sober and reserved style of Dune (2001), Part Two is an organic continuation where we see the consequences of the fall of House Atreides, as well as the adaptation process that Paul (and his mother) have to ally with the Fremen. .

Is Paul Atreides the chosen one? Questionable, the only thing we know is that he will take advantage of this possibility to win over the people of Arrakis, and thus, subsequently, he will avenge the death of his mother.

Dune could be defined simultaneously as a deconstruction and a perfect representation of the hero's journey, a narrative format that has been used countless times in fiction and that even today we can associate with the greatest intellectual properties of pop culture ( Harry Potter, Dragon Ball Z, Star Wars, etc).

What places Paul Atreides' story above all other examples is not only the fact that it was to some extent the blueprint of the format, but also that we very rarely see it executed with such elegance, both in terms of style and substance.

Dune is a visually beautiful film, with special effects that could put any modern blockbuster to shame, full of brilliant performances by the biggest stars of the moment and characterized by a wonderful script that knows how to convey all the information to the viewer without treating it as child.

It undeniably requires a lot more patience than the average fantasy film, but the end result (and its wonderful climax) makes it all worth it.

Luego de procastinar durante una cantidad absurda de tiempo finalmente tuve la oportunidad de ver Dune Parte 2, uno de los filmes de ciencia ficción/fantasía más importantes de las últimas décadas.

Hace un par de semanas les hablaba sobre como Dune Parte 1 me parecía un proyecto brillante que, pese a estructurarse como el inicio de una historia mucho mas grande y compleja, sabía establecer muy bien todos sus elementos narrativos, creando un filme en dónde pasaba "poca cosa' pero al mismo tiempo generaba a sus espectadores unas ansias indescriptibles de continuar la historia, algo bastante riesgoso considerando que en ese momento Denis Villeneuve ni siquiera tenía asegurada la producción de su secuela.

A la larga el experimento funcionó, y el paso de estos últimos años no hizo más que aumentar el hype sobre esta adaptación a los icónicos libros de Frank Herbert.

En este contexto surge Dune 2, una epica de proporciones bíblicas que utiliza las brillantes bases establecidas por la primera parte para crear el equivalente moderno de Empire Strikes Back, solo que mejor...

Reteniendo el estilo sobrio y reservado de Dune (2001), Part Two es una continuación orgánica en donde vemos las consecuencias de la caída de la casa Atreides, así como el proceso de adaptación que tienen Paul (Y su madre) para aliarse con los fremen.

¿Paul Atreides es el elegido? Cuestionable, lo único que sabemos es que aprovechará esta posibilidad para ganarse a la gente de Arrakis, y así, posteriormente, vengará la muerte de su madre.

Dune podría definirse simultáneamente como una deconstrucción y una representación perfecta al viaje del héroe, un formato narrativo que ha sido utilizado una cantidad incontable de veces en la ficción y que incluso en la actualidad podemos asociar con las propiedades intelectuales más grandes de la cultura pop (Harry Potter, Dragon Ball Z, Star Wars, etc).

Lo que coloca la historia de Paul Atreides por encima de todos ejemplos no solo es el hecho de que en cierta medida fue el blueprint del formato, sino que aparte, muy pocas veces lo vemos ejecutado con tanta elegancia, tanto en términos de estilo como de sustancia.

Dune es un filme hermoso visualmente, con efectos especiales que pueden poner en vergüenza a cualquier blockbuster moderno, plagado de performances brillantes de parte de las estrellas más grandes del momento y caracterizado por un guión estupendo que sabe transmitir al espectador toda la información sin tratarlo como un niño.

Es innegable que requiere mucha más paciencia que la película de fantasía promedio, pero el resultado final (y su maravilloso climax) hace que todo valga la pena.
