Sound of Freedom (2023) review: The right story in the wrong hands.

I was reflecting for a long time on whether or not it was a good idea to talk about "Sound of Freedom", this film released in 2023 that received an unexpected amount of attention, and that stands out for facing "directly" a topic as delicate as traffic of children in Central America.

It's intimidating, honestly, not only because I've seen the internet very polarized about it, but also because I feel that those who are not willing to appreciate it unconditionally are usually forced to be put on the same side as the villains of the film, an absurd way of respond to criticism, to be honest...

And let's admit it, although Sound of Freedom is far from being a bad movie, it has a series of drawbacks that are quite difficult to ignore, starting with the way in which they decide to romanticize the entire position that the North American government (and all its agents) has. Regarding this very delicate topic, yes, always presenting it from a passive-aggressive Christian perspective that could go unnoticed by the most inattentive eyes.

Ironically, this does not mean that the topic itself is addressed delicately, on the contrary, the abominable acts are portrayed in an explicit and video clip manner, as if the only way to generate a positive reaction in the viewer was by creating shock.

However, it is important to recognize that these are the type of conflicts that need more representation in cinema (And art in general), since it is easy to ignore such a painful reality in the midst of our banal problems.

My point with this is that although I feel that Sound of Freedom tells a story that SHOULD BE TOLD, it does not seem to me that the right people are telling it, people who are also incapable of recognizing how this situation affects third world countries without need. to make the whole thing feel deeply racist.

Sound of Freedom is full of virtues, and its direction is much more agile than expected, in fact, beneath the representation of all the horrible crimes there is a simple and effective action film, with characters that are not memorable but that They are entertaining enough to endure until the end without much effort. Unfortunately, the lack of subtlety and the foolish need to want to portray a man with good intentions (and a lot of skill) as some kind of messiah end up completely distancing her from greatness.

For those who swear that there is a conspiracy behind this film, with Thousands of people trying to boycott its passage through movie theaters: Open your eyes. Considering its low budget, this is one of the most successful films of the year in financial terms at a time when names like Thor or Batman are unable to attract enough people.

And let's remember: Two things can be true at the same time.

Estuve reflexionando durante un buen rato si era buena idea o no hablar de "Sound of Freedom", está película estrenada en 2023 que recibió una cantidad inesperada de atención, y que destaca por afrontar de forma "directa" un tema tan delicado como el tráfico de niños en centroamericana.

Es intimidante, la verdad, no solo porque he visto al internet muy polarizado al respecto, sino porque aparte siento que aquellos que no están dispuestos a apreciarla incondicionalmente suelen ser puestos forzosamente en el mismo bando de los villanos de la película, una forma absurda de responder a las críticas, para ser honestos...

Y es que admitamoslo, aunque Sound of Freedom dista de ser una mala película, cuenta con una serie de inconvenientes bastante difíciles de ignorar, empezando por la forma en la que deciden romantizar toda la postura que el gobierno norteamericano (y todos sus agentes) tiene respecto a este tema tan delicado, eso sí, siempre presentándolo bajo una óptica cristiana pasivo-agresiva que podría pasar desapercibida ante las miradas más desatentas.

Irónicamente, esto no quiere decir que el tema en si sea abordado con delicadeza, todo lo contrario, los actos abominables son retratados de forma explícita y videoclipera, como si la única forma de generar una reacción positiva en el espectador fuese creando shock.

No obstante, es importante reconocer que ese son el tipo de conflictos que necesitan más representación en el cine (Y el arte en general), ya que es fácil ignorar una realidad tan dolorosa en medio de nuestros problemas banales.

Mi punto con esto es que aunque siento que Sound of Freedom narra una historia que DEBERÍA SER CONTADA, no me parece que la esten narrando las personas adecuadas, personas que aparte son incapaces de reconocer como esta situación afecta a los países del tercer mundo sin necesidad de hacer que todo el asunto se sienta profundamente racista.

Sound of Freedom está plagada de virtudes, y su dirección es mucho más ágil de lo esperado, de hecho, debajo de la representación de todos los crímenes horribles hay un filme de acción simple y efectivo, con personajes que no llegan a ser memorables pero que resultan lo suficientemente entretenidos como para soportarla hasta el final sin mucho esfuerzo. Lastimosamente, la falta de sutileza y la necia necesidad de querer retratar a un hombre con buenas intenciones (y mucha habilidad) como una especie de mesías terminan alejándola totalmente de la grandeza.

Para aquellos que juran que existe una conspiración detrás de esta película, con Miles de personas tratando de boicotear su paso por las salas de cine: Abran los ojos. Considerando su bajo presupuesto esta es una de las películas más exitosas del año en términos económicos en una época en la que nombres como Thor o Batman son incapaces de atraer suficiente gente.

Y recordemos: Dos cosas pueden ser ciertas al mismo tiempo.
